It's because Muruelo doesn't actually own the franchise but this way they can at least continue the prop up of nhl franchise values.
If he didn’t own the franchise as you say they wouldn’t be going through these extraordinary pains to leverage the team out from him??

Or have you forgotten how Jerry Moyes tossed the keys to the league six months prior to the BK and actually signed over the operating control of the Coyotes to the league, but yet was able to put the team into bankruptcy because he was still the legal owner of record?

3) You should expect Atlanta will get to pay that same price if they’re coming in at near the same time.

Sounds like Krause is willing to do just that, as long as the NHL formalizes it soon enough, which may be a contributing factor to the trigger being pulled on this. He only needs $225 million via a tax allocation district to pull off his $2 billion complex. He sounds like he's ready to start yesterday but he needs that NHL approval to get his certificates of occupancy.

Lol, in denial until the end.

Or did you also forget Friedman et al also expected an announcement was forthcoming by the all-star break and that never happened?
1) There is a contingency plan to move the Coyotes. And several well placed hockey media types are saying it’s not 100% in place. Could it be ready in a week? Only the lawyers would know and they aren’t talking. I think if next week goes by and there’s nothing announced by the 18th (day after the season ends) they’ll sit it out through the auction. Everything would be in place by then for a quick move.

They should absolutely blame the NHL. While they did keep the team in the market, their oversight of this franchise has been abysmal. The parade of owners they've installed has been an absolute clown show. And Bettman was incredibly vindictive towards Glendale, which ultimately cost the team its home and has resulted in this move.

Phoenix is a perfectly fine NHL market. This entire circus act should not have happened. Bettman is the one constant in all the dysfunction.
The reasonable solution was the move out 15 years ago. Phoenix would have made a comeback five to seven years later with an arena at the right place, and a owner with real money. They wasted 15 years, and in the end they have to start from scratch anyway. The only thing the NHL won is nobody from a big market got a team for cheap. Not much of a win considering all the bloody money and time wasted in the wrong part of the state. Five years from now if the NHL is not back it probably won't be Gary Bettman problem anyway.

Bingo! If I was a billionaire right now (I am not) and wanted to buy an NHL team (I do), the Coyotes would be on my shortlist simply because of the possibilities. Smith may simply want anything, or maybe he recognizes what he's buying. Who knows, but SLC hockey can be a contender reallllllly soon with the right stewards.

What a dagger for Coyotes fans though. See the team move and right away they are a better team than at any time in their history in Phoenix.

The wheels are in motion. Every NHL insider is saying the same thing: this is not a contingency plan. Do you actually think that Meruelo will own this team when the land goes to auction? Like for real?

I obviously have no proof other than making logical conclusions/assumptions but I simply cannot fathom a situation where the NHL completed a traditional sale of the team to AM. My guess has always been that he was given the team and is the official owner of record however there was never money actually exchanged, and that there were numerous clauses tied to the building of an arena put in the "sale" to allow the NHL to force a second "sale" back to the NHL regardless of AM's wishes.

Even what's his face (I don't remember his name) from a while ago mentioned that possibility when he talked about the ways the NHL could force the sale of the team.

So that's what I mean when I say "he's not the owner of the team".

I've disagreed with many of your BOH posts over the years but I think you're right on the money here.

There's a hell of a lot of blame to go around if this team leaves and the NHL deserves a shit ton of it.

And yet, if it wasn't for that parade of clowns, or the way they manipulated Glendale, they would have been forced to move a decade ago.

Reality is, if they could have enticed a deep pocketed owner to attach themselves to this disaster, they would have.

There just wasn't anyone like that interested, including Muruelo.

It called ripping a bandaid quickly. All that circus essentially sour the market.

Of course wheels are in motion.

There a fork in the road just up ahead and now we get to see which way the wheels go.

I just posted above what I thought about it.

If nothing is announced the 18th (or 19th) the league will wait out the auction.

Auction fails then they move the team immediately. Another 8 weeks isn’t going to matter. I’m sure SLC will be prepping themselves up and be ready to jump and won’t have trouble selling 12,000 seats (which is about all they have room for) plus the suites.

A lot of that is true.

However by now Glendale would have been palatable had Ellman and Moyes not split their partnership and separated the Coyotes from Westgate.

Seravalli went on the Morgan show and both hosts acknowledged that he had real sources and was right about the situation.

Does he still know nothing? You have tried to discredit multiple professionals and said

Insiders are wrong
Owners don’t matter.
Tempe voters would vote for the arena.
Scottsdale mayor is irrelevant.

Your posts always ring very much of you being the sole authority on the topic.

Nothing has changed about your attitude in any of this? At all? Do you still think they are staying? I’m confused

Um… I was there.

I posted the damn link to it here.

Read what I said about it above. You’ll see I gave Seravalli credit for adding more clarity

Since then I hear he’s revealed some more info about Meruelo (which he hinted in the podcast) the league was frowning on him and why they’re pressuring him to just accept the offer (hint: it’s about not paying hotel bills).

Once again....is there a link somewhere to the conversation in which Seravalli talked about the hotel bills?

He has been completely clear and direct for months. You just didn’t want to hear it so discredited him for no reason.

He said clearly they “don’t have the votes”
Tempe won’t pass

That the league has been sourcing other options.

They coyotes may be leaving way before anyone else.

You completely discredited and dismissed him.

You wanted people to ignore insiders and reporters who turned out to be right.

Why would you expect people to take your opinion? Who has been more right. You or serevalli?

On the Dfo rundown today.
He said that they were stiffing teams on bills

There was an announcement. They submitted an application to buy the land.

No… this was about Salt Lake City.

Friedman indicated that “contingency plan” had been bouncing back and forth for months. LeBrun (I believe) first referred to it last summer. There was some speculation a contingency plan was underway because nothing was coming out of Meruelo’s camp at that point (until the AZ Republic story broke)

And yes there was also a lot of anger beginning to stir with Coyotes fans on all the silence.

Definitely. I remember when the Flames left Atlanta having never won a playoff series and then went to the conference finals the first year in Calgary.
