I think the chef should get 60% of the tip personally. Probably more. I mean he/she made me the food. The waiter just picked it up and brought it to me.

Whats that like 15-30 feet at most? You didn't run a marathon to get it to me.

the only time I haven't given a tip was when my wife and I went to a restaurant and we waited over an hour to just get the menu handed to us. We were just talking and then started to realize that they totally forgot about us.

The restaurant only gave us our drinks for free, but we had only ordered soft drinks so we saved like $4 or something. I left a 2 cent tip. I figured that was more insulting than no tip at all.

I did enjoy writing $0.02 in the TIP section on the bill.

I have a question:

Do you leave a tip when you get take-out?

We order take-out from sit-down restaurant sometimes and I always feel awkward about whether I'm supposed to tip or not. I generally just tip 10%. It's less than the normal 15-20% that I normally do, but I figure it at least covers me so I'm not being a total jerk.
In my mind, it's more or less the same as us going there to eat. I talked to someone and gave them my order. They brought the order to the kitchen, the kitchen made my food. The server then brought the food to me when I arrived to pick it up.

How is that different from driving there and eating there? Me driving it home has nothing to do with anything because I would have driven there to eat there anyways.

But, I don't feel weird for not tipping at a take-out only place, so why treat one restaurant different from the other?

why in the hell would you sit at a table for an hour+ waiting on a menu? honestly, if i were the waiter... i'd probably still ignore you just to see how unreasonably long you'd just sit there and do nothing about it.

I'm surprised you guys waited that long. I was in Montreal with some friends when we decided to go have breakfast at the restaurant in the hotel. We were probably there for 15 minutes before they acknowledged us and there was hardly anyone there. I'm talking like 2-3 other tables, and more than one server working. A guy at another table even remarked to us that it seemed like they were ignoring us. Not sure what we did wrong.

Was at a tiki bat this past weekend with a friend of mine and this new broad that he is laying the wood to. She is going on and on about what a ***** our waitress is because she used to date her cousin and apparent she cheated on the guy.

She keeps insisting she isn't gonna tip her and she is gonna pay the bill and hand it to her and she wants to say something but isn't sure what she can say without sounding like a "trashy girl". Her words not mine. She is going on and on and on.

Finally I said look. When the check comes just write in the line that says tip, stop being a *****.

She was happy with that resolution. She handed her the check, told her to keep the change and we left.

It worked out for me cause I got to drink on this girls dime.

Photo Of Bill

Jess Jones, 20, was working at D’Jais Bar & Grill on Ocean Avenue on Aug. 17, when she noticed that one of her tables left her no tip, the Asbury Park Press reported.

The bill came out to a total of $112.03 and instead of offering a generous gratuity, the tip line read “LOL†with “1 hour for food†written next to it.

Sorry--If I wait one hour for food I am not tipping

the chef is making more per hour then the server making a couple bucks an hour. so no, the chef should not get any of the tip.
clowns everywhere in this thread with your no tipping stance if you are sitting down for dinner at a restaurant

In canada the minimum wage applies to everybody so the chef is probably making more but the waiter is working a minimum wage job.

it does depend how busy a place is and what is ordered by a party/table on how long a place takes to get you your food. sure an hour is a bit excessive for getting your food but you aren't going to get quick service or whatever you consider quick service if say you had to wait 45 minutes for a table and the place is super busy.
because by the time you sit there are likely many, many orders ahead of yours.
that isn't the waiter or waiters fault. so long as the server is pleasant and cordial to me they will get something of a tip.
but yeah I know. when some of you go to place its all about you. never mind everyone else who is there.

also I don't tip if I am picking up food for takeout.

Because the servers have to deal with all the wonderful customers who of course know how to handle themselves in public and are NEVER rude

I'm just gonna assume all these guys on their no tipping high horse have never worked in the food industry

So tipping is a rudeness tax? That makes no sense.

I tip 15%, because its right on the debit machine. They make you go through like 4 steps on that thing just NOT to tip. I haven't even lived in a time where you tipped with actual cash. I'm a young fella.

That doesn't mean tipping makes sense, especially when restaurants in canada are still subject to minimum wage laws same as any other business.

Why should all the tip go to the person who brings it out? The cooks made the food, they should get their cut too. Same with dishwashers. It's a team effort.

If you don't want to tip go to mcdonalds, if you want to go to an actual restaurant and don't want to tip, then prepare for your meals to be more expensive until everything is self serve or robot service.

having a waiter or waitress is a courtesy if you don't want that, go somewhere without servers, problem fixed.

This is a hockey message board keerole. Canadas game. Restaurants are not exempt from minimum wage laws here. Why would not tipping make the meals more expensive? You mean the gratuity would just be on the bill?

I tip the guy who fills my car. He's out in the frozen tundras of canada smelling like gasoline. I tip cap drivers, the mans busting his ass feeding his first generation kids. I feel good when I do that.

If I saw brad pitts punk ass waiting my table with his screenplay in his back pocket trying to make it big in hollywood I'd tip him, but I wouldn't like it.

Or employers in usa could pay their employees a decent wage so they don't have to worry about tips
