Cup Planning: Montreal Bars Move Last Call to 5:30a

Crescent and Bishop do have some good pubs: Hurley's, Fiddler's Green, Grumpy's, Brutopia.

Although I hold nothing against these institutions I simply don't like to hang around Crescent. I don't like the vibe of Crescent and the majority of the people there at night are tourists.

SO only some bars will stay open? HUMM. WHY??
Well I think I know this answer. The city wants more tourists and money.
The people want to party longer but here is the kicker, NOBODY wants an extra 1000 drunk drivers at 5:30am on the roads. If you let ALL bars open until 5:30 am the cops will have a tough time stopping the drunks, if you limit the open bars to 19 or so the cops can control much much better. Just have 3-4 cars right in front of each open bars. We don't care if you drink until 5:30am we only care if you DRIVE. Drink all you want just don't go anywhere near you car.

I'm not the biggest fan. Alcohol bring out the worst in people. Now we have to worry about drunks on the road during the morning commute to work.

You mean more drunk people in the metro?

Can't wait to see if it's going to last after the tryout. Not that I'll be around to experience it, but I don't think I would be part of the people drinking until 5AM.

What does Montreal live in a police state? Do cabs operate at 3 am and not 5:30 am? Can people not walk at 5:30 am ?

Your assumption, incorrectly , is that opening bars 2.5 hours longer will result in people drinking 2.5 hours more.

Closing time in Toronto is 2am. Obviously a 3am closing time in Montreal means that people are 1 hour more intoxicated than people in Toronto, so why doesn't Montreal camp police out in front of bars today? Because citizens and bar owners don't want that form of police harassment.

No ****ing ****.

What's wrong with tourists?

What the hell...at 2 AM the party is only getting started.

Exactly what I was going to post

For me, the Biggest shock going back home. 2am. Bars done. **** hull.

Speaking of which, anybody know why bars in Quebec close at 3 (2 in hull due to douchbaggy ontarians but I can get behind tht at least)?

Actually I have long standing deal with my company that should the Habs get to the winning game if the cup final, I'm allowed to go back home so this 5:30 thing works for me should that happen ;)

I live above a pretty lively bar and I do cherish those few hours b/t 3:30am and 6am where I can get some nicely needed rest :) Otherwise I usually hear the wooo wooo!! calls all night from the local crew. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against happy people having a good time while enjoying a good local ale, however my biggest pet peeve is angry belligerent, violent, unpredictable drunks. Believe me Ive run into many of these while walking my dog during the mornings.

Last year Stanley Cup final began on June 12. Starting June 12 of this year, select Montreal bars will be allowed to move last call to 5:30a. God bless the Montreal cup planners.

You forgot to mention that the city will receive 8 new water canons, an armored vehicle, and enough tear gas to make people in Florida cry.

They still close at 3AM in Gatineau.

It's 2 a.m. here in Arizona.

Most bars will kick you out by 1:45 to cover their ***** as the legal penalty for a sale past 2 a.m. is pretty harsh.

Way I see it closing later will just disperse the amount of drunkards leaving an establishment over a longer period of time instead of the cluster**** that is 3am....

Montreal already has an after-hours market, now those people will be able to party and drink all night instead of just partying (and sneaking drinks/xtc/coke) at the raver spots.

Bars are open 23.5 hrs many places in Belgium, they take a .5 hr to wipe down the tables, then the patrons return to the bar from their 30-minute walk. Not a thing wrong with that, if that's what you do!

Well above it. What's your point?

Alcohol consumption is pointless and turns people into idiots at best and dangerous savages at worst.

It's fun for some people. Others don't find it fun.

Some people don't know how to have fun responsibly, regardless of whether it's alcohol consumption or something else. Others do.

Nothing more needs to be said than that.
