Craig Berube Named the 32nd Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs

Berube is always so serious in the press conferences, except on the topic of Willy lol. Then he's like smiling and joking.

He's got a favorite child for sure lmao.
He is smart Berube .. he knows that Willy is his only game changing threat who can move da needle offensively .. but he needs to figure out how to get Willy on track every game

Time for Craig to work wherever magic he’s got to get these guys to buy in, play hard, and keep our advantage on home ice.

Would like a lineup change too but I’ll believe it when I see it

He needs to insert Kamph and Robertson for Jarnkrok and Holmberg.

Berube might be a better coach than Keefe.

But I'm not convinced he's still the right coach for this team. Admittedly he's better suited than 99.9999% of the people out there. Too bad NHL head coaches are ~0.0000000001% of the world's population.

Goalies make the coach.

So it's no surprise once goaltending went downhill so did the team. What was surprising is Woll's collapse. I actually had the utmost of confidence in him too.

Bringing him out to start the third was a shameful act by Berube.

Maybe he figured replacing Woll with Murray was like dumping bleach into the pool to clean it. More likely Berube's a dangerous combination of stupidity and stubborness. He reminds me of Keefe a lot in that way.

They'd both rather lose than admit they made a mistake.

Think you mighta been right afterall!

All credit to you sticking with your guns.

We absolutely need to adopt Florida's playstyle.

It's so much better I can't even think about it right now.
We don't have the horses for it. Top to bottom All Florida players play a certain way. Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews, William Nylander, etc. can't play that type of game. It's not in their DNA. After 9 years I'm tired of this. I'm ready for a rebuild. Get rid of the stench of the core 4 once and for all. They just can't get it done.

Obviously we need a rebuild.

I'm so mad we have no 1st round picks. What did Laughton and Carlo do this series that Kampf or Myers couldn't have????

If Berube doesn't split Matthews/Marner then he is part of the problem. He is just a mercenary. He is submitting to what Shanny and Tre tell him to do just for a paycheck. Absolutely pathetic.

Splitting them up isn't going to do anything... I mean, let's be honest here, these are just guys who don't step up to the next level of play when it counts. Having them on different lines isn't going to change that.

What are we going to do, shuffle the chairs on the deck of the titanic? These are alleged pros, find a way to make it work.

Plenty of praise, and deservedly so, for how he handled the 1st round and managed expectations of playing against a weaker opponent.

But he's been thoroughly outcoached since the Panthers made tweaks after game 2.

Him not breaking up 16 and 34 to start the second, even despite how awful that line looked and repeatedly got hemmed in, was just unacceptable coaching.

You don't need to be highly tenured in this league to know that those 2 just didn't have it, and by the time he tried to break glass in case of emergency with his lines, it was far too late.

There's probably a larger conversation that also needs to be had about Berube approached and handled 16 and 34 all year, and especially in the playoffs, regarding their past failures.

Berube consistently downplayed them, ignored them, and made sure everyone knew that he hasn't had any sorts of conversations with them about their playoff struggles.

He probably needed to - they looked shellshocked and completely overwhelmed, when either the round 1 or round 2 series got into crunch time. His shock/disbelief post-game after game 5 was slightly comical given he hasn't bothered addressing it with either of these guys.

I think he wanted to turn the page and try to move past the baggage. I didn't mind the approach because these guys are damaged, no question about it. I really don't blame him, apart from maybe sticking with them together.

I feel like his marching orders has been to human Xanax pill Matthews and Marner, eliminate their anxiety and turn down the emotional heat to trick them into a relaxed regular season mindset in the heat of the playoffs. Really business as usual. It’s just a game. All business. Clearly not working but the other stuff that’s been put in place to get them to this place has been good.

You don't deal with trauma by simply ignoring it and pretending it didn't exist.
They have people on the team to talk to about that stuff. The head coach is trying to create a different environment and it's a calculated decision to not dwell on the past. The sports psychologists can address that with them.

Clearly it hasn't been addressed.
They elude to them all the time, I'm sure it is addressed. What else do they talk about? All I'm saying, I liked that Berube came in without the scars and focused on a new day, I give him a pass for that approach. The head coach can stay above things, leave it to the minions.

I don't understand why he never tried splitting Marner and Matthews up for like at least 10-15 games during the regular season.
It's literally what the regular season is for. Trying combos out. It's unforgivable that he didn't try, honestly - especially with Domi sucking all year except for a brief time w Matty last playoff. Too late now, but it's been proven that Matty needs men on his line to bring him into the fight, and Mitch can play with anyone - so get Knies and Domi on his f'n wings, and let's go. It can't be any worse.

I'm frustrated he's done nothing to adjust the Matthews Marner line despite them getting exposed by Florida on the road... and now at home. ... Just like Sheldon
