Not like we haven't seen a November heater too

But I will say I like the changes Berube has made in how this team is winning. Overcoming injuries and illness well.

In the past, we heard chatter around the league that this era of the Leafs could beat anybody on any given night but it wouldn't be a hard night.

I personally like the idea of a team coming into Toronto, getting beat soundly on the scoreboard and getting beat up physically in the process. It shouldn't be fun for teams to come here, and Ontario and GTA guys shouldn't feel like it's a fun homecoming.

If you can't beat em in the alley you can't beat em on the ice. The foundation of this franchise is built on that. Why play nice?

Because the NHL will not allow us to play dirty. We can't even play mildly annoyed without getting suspensions left and right.

Those last two explain a lot when wondering why our goaltending has been effective. We're limiting the high danger chances and if the goalie makes the save the D is ensuring he doesn't have to make another one.

The beauty of this system, we won't have to transition to "playoff hockey", it will be who we are already. Love these stats!

With Florida losing in regulation and Tampa losing in OT, no Atlantic team can catch the Leafs at the 20 game mark. In the Matthews era this is the deepest into the season (November 21st) that the Leafs have held first in the Atlantic Division. Fantastic start to the Berube era.

Post game they asked Marner what they needed to do more of after the first. He said play "more North". Love it, Berube hockey is seeping into our mindset. And there's no adjustment required come playoff time anyways, it's a natural fit this style.

I wish our PP entries would play more north, I feel like that's still the thing lingering from past coaching. It's really quite painful and predictable. Sometimes Marner or Nylander go rogue and take it themselves and easily just walk right in...

That's not really Keefe vs. Berube. Keefe had those kind of metrics prior to last year too. That's GM ignoring defense vs. GM not ignoring defense.

Its part of both, yes GM move helped but a part coming to the coach. Just an exemple

With keefe system, the biggest part of offensive was quick transition to score off the rush. Toronto was taking more risk in transition ( especially player like marner, matthews and nylander) and when the play missed, it was harder to prevent scoring chance

Under Berube its pretty simple, you got the puck in defensive so make sure than the puck will move out of the zone and after we will work to create something. They having less scoring chance off the rush for sure but they basically never get caught out of position defensively.

Sheldon Keefe said something last year that was hilariously true, and also a reflection on the style we were playing:

"When teams play the Leafs, they set up the game for the Leafs to beat themselves"

What you mentioned played into that, teams would sit back knowing Toronto would make a mistake in transition and they'd capitalize on it. There's no better example than Gallagher's game 7 goal

It looks like we're past that, fingers crossed it continues

Where is he in the Jack Adams race? Does he crack the top 3? I think I have Arniel, Carberry, and Rod the Bod ahead of him. Obviously debatable. I am curious what you think.
I've been saying since before the season started that Berube will win it (when everyone thought Keefe would win it, which isn't happening). Winnipeg and Washington will both fall off (especially Washington). With the way the media loves Berube, and the Leafs likely finishing top 3 in the league, he will win it by a good margin.

It's mostly just the difference between Treliving tanking and not tanking our defense. I'm not sure where people got the idea that we were such a heavy rush team, and I'm not sure where people got the idea that there's only one viable system, but we had those same defensive results under both coaches.

All coaches use the same handful of systems so it's not like Berube's is any radical departure from what they were already doing.

The Leafs under Berube run a 1-2-2 forecheck. 5-on-5 they rely heavily on being opportunistic by capitalizing on the opponent making a mistake. Even strength play revolves around creating high chance opportunities off the rush through a steady forecheck and set breakouts.

The breakouts consist of short outlet passes between forwards as they exit the zone.

They move together as a unit pulling off the wall into centre ice inside the neutral zone to give them more entry options. They prefer to enter the zone with possession but won't hesitate to dump it in to gain the zone. The Leafs are a good puck retreival team so will dump it in a lot more than some might think for a puck possession team.

Once the puck is in deep behind the opponents goal line they will run a 2-1-2.

The penalty kill is a 1-2-1 diamond and the powerplay is a 1-3-1 with rotating bodies. The forwards are capable of springing a rush off a turnover and hemming the opponents in their own end so are aggressive on the special teams. They've taken a few more point shots than previous years but for the most part once inside the oppositions zone they set up as quickly as possible looking for cross seam passes in the slot.

There's a difference but it isn't massive.

The key to remember with these statistics is that because the league has a high degree of parity it only takes a few percentage difference to move a team up or down significantly in that category's standings. So when the Leafs go from 54% CF to 49% CF, for example, they drop from being an elite corsi team to a below average one. If think you can see the difference in 5 shot attempts out of every 100 you are just fooling yourself and that goes for every other statistic out there.

The changes in the game are dramatically exaggerated by the way the stats are presented.

On the defensive side the Leafs fall back from their 1-2-2 into a box+1 formation.

They prefer to fall back and rarely stand the opponent up. The Leafs are a good puck retrieval team so they want to encourage the opponent to take a shot so they can scoop the puck up and rush it back the other way. The goal is to keep the opponent on the perimeter and force them to either take a low percentage shot from the outside or be stripped of the puck.

Once the puck is behind the goal line they run standard 2-on-2 down low, with one man in front of the net, and the wingers in the shooting lanes up top.

If the opponent leaves the net front so will the Leafs player guarding it. They will often swarm down low to outnumber the opponent in order to win the puck battle. Once they have possession they will either feed it to a breaking winger or execute a series of short outlet passes to exit the zone.

When in trouble they ice the puck.

One thing I think they should do is use the stretch pass more. The Leafs have fast wingers, like Nylander, who can catch the puck on the rush and fly past opponents for a breakaway. I thought the whole North-South game of Berube's would mean a bit of a return of the run'n'gun game they played under Babcock but that hasn't been the case.

It's more of a skate-skate-pass-pass-pass-shoot mentality than a pass-skate-shoot one.

I hope this is a change for the better.

Change was definitely needed as typically Keefe was good for extending the season for about 7 games a season but we need to aim higher.

The list of guys available wasn't great with Gallant, Berube and McLellan being the big names.

Other guys that people consider good coaches were hired elsewhere like Maurice and Deboer...but they all got fired elsewhere.

Coaches are hired to be fired.
Ruff!
