Confirmed with Link: Coyotes sign Matt Dumba to a 1 year, 3.9M contract

Even if the Pens are interested they'd have to move contracts.

Which they should be able to do -- neither Rutta or Granlund have any sort of trade protection (2.75m and 5m in AAV respectively).

To me, doesn't seem like it would be too hard for Pens to fit in Dumba. It would take some doing to fit in EK (esp since 6.25m AAV Petry has a 15 team no-trade), but apparently they're the frontrunner for EK somehow which to me makes no sense cap wise. The other frontrunner for EK is apparently Carolina which makes even less sense to me based on the Canes having Brent Burns. *shrug*

You know what might be happening? Maybe Pens have agreed with SJ to an EK deal but rn they're stuck trying to clear cap space (can only be 10% above the cap in the offseason, EK would get them well over that). I'm saying this based on absolutely nothing but it certainly would explain some things

Any other team I would agree, but I just don't see the Pens being able to move a contract. Granlund isn't worth that contract and the Pens lack assets worthy of taking on bad contracts. To me it looks like the Pens are stuck with what they have and going into the season with 21 contracts.

Well, they have their 2024 first. And I think if you go to any team with cap space and say something like, "hey we can give you a 31 year old Granlund, a 32 year old cup winning Rutta and our 2024 first what do you think?" Well, I hope if they called us that we would say yes.

Not a lot of teams have cap space, but I'd think one of us, CHI, ANA would say yes to that. Also SJ if they can trade EK (to PIT or CAR or someone else). Esp since Rutta played top pair with Hedman during at least one of those Tampa cup runs (maybe for multiple runs, I honestly don't know). Both Granlund and Rutta only run through 2025, who cares

Training camp is mid-September so there's zero rush on this from the perspective of the player. Even if he were to sign today, there's no way he's coming to Phoenix until closer to the start of camp when this heatwave has passed anyway.

I have no idea, but it is flat out bizarre to me that there are above average players just sitting there unsigned for weeks…and equally bizarre that it takes these teams sooooo long to come to a decision about signings/trades etc. I get it, a lot of money is involved blah blah, but honestly just get on with it already and make a decision. Nauseating.
Teams are strangled by the cap.

So you're saying this heat wave will only last until mid-September?

Hearing 13.5 for Matthews. I think it was Friedman reporting that a couple of nights ago on a podcast. I wonder what term would go with that and if they'll be able to squeeze Nylander in.

Reported on Lyle's, the term is between 3 and 5 years. If everyone else is getting paid, Nylander would want a significant raise to stay in TO. I'm expecting WN to be moved before camp.

Not going to lie. I'm very excited for a Nylander trade by Trievling. My guess is TOR will melt down even if they get a good defenseman back. Nothing will be good enough for a majority of that fan base

I can't see a Nylander trade netting much if the Player is asking for the reported $10 million per season. He has one year to UFA and isn't worth his ask.

IMO, the ask is only to stay in TO. Everybody else got top dollar last time except Nylander. I can see him getting tired of the Leafs and that's the money it would take to re-sign there. He would do great here between Keller and Schmaltz. Not worth trading for though...

Nylander did get top dollar last time, it's just that the others came up after him and demanded more than they deserved. He was a 60 point player and got $7 million. He has earned it but certainly wasn't underpaid for half the deal. As an example Marner signed after a 94 point season.

We’re in Colorado now, headed to Cheyenne and then Rushmore…. Glad to be out of that shit for a while!
I'm jealous!! You're headed for my old stomping grounds, spent the first 14 years of my life in around the Wyoming/Nebraska border about 40 miles East of Cheyenne. If you drive through Kimball, NE stop by the mom and pop Dairy Queen for a one of a kind hickory burger (it's basically a sloppy joe) and a jimmy parfait, you can't get them anywhere else!

I worked in the missile field out there in the 1990s.

After further review:
The hold up could be O'Connor's arbitration and the buy out it provides (Grandlund ?)

Oh good call. That's very possible too.

@rt -- arbitration is weird. Basically after the arbiter awards a salary, the team MUST pay that salary unless it's above ~4.5m, if the contract is above ~4.5m, the team can instead decide to walk away from that player who then becomes a straight UFA. Won't happen with O'Connor (or w McBain) but might happen w Samsonov over in Leaf land.

Anyway since in most cases the team MUST pay the arbitration salary, they get a second buyout window which lasts 48 hours. And buying out Granlund would make sense because he didn't score with PIT (5 points, 21 games), and also because it'd save the Pens about 4.2m in space this year and about 3.2m next year. But, Dubas has previously said he doesn't want to use buyouts and imo that guy is a Chayka level idiot so who knows what he will actually do.

Really curious to see where all of this falls, we'll likely see in a couple of weeks if not sooner

O’Conner isn’t going to get paid enough for it to matter and they could’ve bought out Granlund earlier this off-season. What I’m not seeing is the connection between Oconnors award and their desire/plan regarding Granlund. Sure, they will get another opportunity but why would they feel any different than they did when the had their last opportunity?

Good question. Maybe now they have a more pressing need to clear cap space (Dumba or EK trade), or maybe they don't and no buyouts will occur.

We'll all find out soon enough in real time

could be oddly worded but Craig called the Matt Dumba pursuit a “long shot” in his latest article.

The Coyotes offseason has not ended. There could be changes to this lineup. Maybe that longshot Matt Dumba pursuit will still pan out. Maybe Logan Cooley will change his mind about his sophomore season at Minnesota. Maybe a cap-strapped team will knock the Coyotes’ socks off with a trade proposal to take on another bad contract. Maybe an attractive player will become available on waivers just as Juuso Välimäki and Connor Ingram were last season.

I’m assuming he goes to one of the destinations that does not land EK65 (CAR or PIT)

O'Connor is insignificant in this scenario other than his contract decision (whether or not it goes to arbitration) opens up a buy out window. Dubas was just hired and had a meeting with Crosby and Letang who both agreed to get it done (Letang was willing to be replaced by EK on PP1).

This is what I gather from Lyle's different rumor pages.

I still think we'll end up with Tyler Myers in September.
