I'm really not sold that this system is the best fit for this team. When they're not playing well, they are just leaving their goalies out to dry. So many damn shots. Staal needs more help from his forwards.
As for Lias -- he's really getting screwed by the players he's being paired with. Perfect examples from just the 2nd period:
- The 4th line had just come on the ice for a shift and Smith was first man back and didn't even bother to pick up the 3rd man. He was left wide open and went all alone on Georgie who came up huge. Then, the next draw. 4th line is off the ice again.
-Earlier in the period, Lias was on the ice for the penalty kill with Howden and at one point literally had to push Howden in the back to get him into the right position.
- THEN, late in the period, Sjkei is carrying the puck into the zone and right as he enters zone and is one stride over the blue line he makes a 5ft lateral pass into Andersson's skates. Andersson has to think quick and treat the puck like a grenade just so the team isn't burned badly.
Lastly, (not an andersson situation) on the first goal Rangers, DeAngelo is 3rd man in. And yet Skjei and Strome who were trailing kept coming in. Kessel was hanging about 10 feet behind them. One bad pass and it's a Kessel breakaway the other. Skjei needs to have better awareness in that situation.
These kind of mistakes are happening all over the ice. And unfortunately, it has little negative impacts all over the team. Goalies have to stand on their heads. Lias getting hardly any ice.
Skjei has been a disaster this game.
Also for what it's worth -- Trouba is having a pretty rough game for him.
