I can forgive him for not being on the scoresheet more often. I see no reason for him not being a physical force every game. He is powerful and a great skater. He should be causing physical fear when he is on the ice.
Lots of players play that way every shift, let alone every game. It is getting tiresome watching him trying to make nice passes all the time.
I brought this up in a thread last night and one poster kept repeating he is stupid. That may or may not be true, but is irrelevant to his lack of physicality.
He is playing in his third season, despite technically being a rookie, so that is not an excuse.
He might become very good someday, but right now he is performing way below his potential.
By the way, this has nothing to do with his bad deflection.
Everything Hags did last night, Kreider can do better. But Kreider over thinks it, imo. He simply has to be more physical than he has been to succeed to his potential. To some extent he's still counting on skill to deliver some short cuts. His time on ice shrank in the 3rd, so I suspect others are noticing this as well.
I remember a young Bertuzzi. The Islanders became so frustrated they gave up on him. We won't make that same mistake with Kreider.
He might not have the disposition of a truly Nasty PF, but I think it's a role he will become more comfortable with in time. When Kreider finally realizes that there are no short cuts and that his Natural Size, Speed, Strength and Skill all have to work together....then we'll really have something to see out there. And we've already glimpsed that huge potential.
My belief is that he has it in him to flat take over an NHL game.
