So many positive take aways from this game. One of interest was the idea that the better match for a line mate with MSL is actually Hags. Hmmmm. We'll see what happens there.

Speaking of Hags. Wow. What a game from him. Really elevated his play. Just when I think he's stalled a bit, he comes back and proves that slowly, steadily he's adapting and improving. Very impressive performance from him.

MSL started with Hags when he first came over and I thought they looked good together other than Hagelin trying too hard to setup St Louis

I think St Louis with Zucarello and Brassard is a bad line and I'd definitely flip Zucarello and Hagelin and at least try it

St Louis was also fighting off the flu last night, same as Stepan, but yeah he needs to get settled in and get going, really just looks like he hasn't found his place yet

Absolutely. Hagelin, and oddly, Dom Moore, both looked like they had another gear that nobody on either team had. They were just flying.

I didn't know Moore could skate like that. Was it just me, or was he zooming around out there last night in a way that he usually doesn't?

Perhaps the best thing was that the guys on the bench knew they were actually down two guys in MSL and Steps, and really picked it up a notch.

It's shows a team that plays for each other and responds well to a situation.

I'm surprised more people aren't incensed by Brassard's two mess ups on the second goal. It really was atrocious.

First the bad pass from behind the net which led to the odd man rush and then tipping it in on his attempt at a defensive play.

I just rewatched the replay, he didn't cover the point well enough when his defenseman pinched in. He wasn't behind the net.

And tipping it...I mean is that really mistake and not bad luck? He tried to make a defensive play and instead put it between Hank's legs. Yea he probably could've done a better job there to waffle board it away but at least he was there.

Brassard though, I'm still fuming at that sequence. It was terrible.

I have to say, I really like how AV has been using defenseman right in front of the net. Last night, I saw Staal within 5 feet of the net getting a couple rebound chances, and obviously the Girardi deflection and the McDonagh rebound game winner. I really like how the offense was really pushing to win that game before the shootout.

It was so refreshing to see us bringing it to a team when that team decides to turtle.

I've been traumatized seeing us do it to other teams under Torts, it was a refreshing change.

It always struck me as odd how Tort's motto "Safe is death" seems to have died itself with him in Tampa Bay. AV with more or less the exact same defensive personnel has opened up the offensive ability of the defensemen, with relatively few defensive lapses as a result of pinching. I seriously think that MDZ was a huge detriment to this team, and we can see that. Nashville has begun scratching him after less than 10 games. I don't understand why it took us 4 years to figure that out.

Onward and Upward, Rongos.

Didn't watch. Solid comeback obviously. It's almost hard to believe that we have 40 wins, considering all the rough stretches we've been through this season.
Philly will be tough. Hopefully we'll muster up at least 4 out of 8 points on the west coast trip.

Keep on rolling, hombres.

In fairness, MDZ has played much better at times than he has this year, particularly in 2011-12. Maybe he just doesn't fit in AV's system, and now he's lost his confidence. He needs an offseason to get his head right. Hopefully for his sake he can figure it out.

Why Does Kreider Go Games Between Hard Checks?

I can forgive him for not being on the scoresheet more often. I see no reason for him not being a physical force every game. He is powerful and a great skater. He should be causing physical fear when he is on the ice.

Lots of players play that way every shift, let alone every game. It is getting tiresome watching him trying to make nice passes all the time.

I brought this up in a thread last night and one poster kept repeating he is stupid. That may or may not be true, but is irrelevant to his lack of physicality.

He is playing in his third season, despite technically being a rookie, so that is not an excuse.

He might become very good someday, but right now he is performing way below his potential.

By the way, this has nothing to do with his bad deflection.

We saw him look completely lost on the ice way more than actually seeing him confident and being able to produce offensively. Through Torts, Vingeault, and now Trotz. It doesn't seem like it's about systems. I'm not trying to beat a dead horse here, but this team is much better with Klein than with MDZ. I don't even think that's debatable.

In general this team has sloughed off so much dead weight that we started with at the beginning of the season. Those first 10 games of the season were so freakin' brutal. Even if we had just picked up 2 more of those games (maybe against phoenix and that ugly 4-0 shutout at the pebble), we'd be in 3rd place overall in the east with 88 points. only 9 behind Pittsburgh.

MDZ. Aaron Asham. Darryl Powe. Taylor Pyatt. Marty Biron. We're definitely heading in the right direction. I'm running out of players to hate!:yo:

Why is being a rookie not an excuse? Why is the fact that he may have below average hockey IQ not a valid reason?

CK is a rookie who is still learning to balance his offensive abilities with his physical prowess while still maintaining solid defensive play. It's going to take time. Look at power forwards around the league their first few years, it took them a while to put the whole package together.

Power forwards take time to be scorers, not to be physical.

He is at the end of his third professional season. He knows what the NHL is by now.

Kreider was never a "physical player". Not even in college. His game is decent defense, great speed, and great hands with a good shot. He found his physical edge this year. I expect that physicality to improve in the playoffs and into next year.

To be fair, Staal was nowhere to be seen. He did not do his defensive duty on that play. Kreider tried to make the most of it, after missing the net, but tipped the puck in, through the legs of Lundqvist. Bad play, but at least he was there to prevent it being a 2-on-1 break.

I'm not 100% sure but what I think happened is that Staal pinched and Kreider didn't do a good enough job covering the point.

He found his physical edge and was one of their best forwards. He lost it and he no longer is.

I am not disputing what might become. I am disputing his current usefulness.

I think we have a tendency here to come down hard on certain players and issue free passes to others.

It's not an official rule I believe, but is right on the cusp and will most likely get deleted if reported.

I don't call Devils "Debbies" or Islanders "Piles" but that has to do less with respect and more with me just thinking it sounds dumb. "Rags", IMO is offensive, since to me it has to do with...well use your imagination.

What really boggles my mind is how some Ranger fans say Rags. :shakehead

Agree, I would have to say I'm the same way, has nothing to do with respecting them but you sound stupid and ignorant if you resort to name calling. Maybe I am one of those pompous hockey fans *polishes monocle* Reminds me of when I was at the NJD game and their cheer was "rangers suck! flyers swallow! crosby watches!"... I just looked around for verification like "really?"

I've been really impressed with Staal's play. He's been playing very physical on the boards the last two games and when he's not, he seems to be in good position.
