Kraft trying to cheap out again like when Brady was here. He found out that isn’t working anymore. He’s going to have to pay out. He’s as cheap as Jacobs, except he got luck with a mega quarterback that took less money to play.

I hear this a lot. What was he specifically “cheaping out on”?

Patriots came in last year before in that player poll for the gym/facilities. This year building new facilities.

Cash spending? Yeah, he doesn’t spend as much up front cash as some other teams. I suspect that is linked to the way he has always run his other businesses. Can’t do that in the NFL. They did offer Ridley the biggest offer this past offseason and he didn’t want to come here.

I think the stuff about hiring other coaches who were under contract to another team, was a Bill thing (see Patricia and Judge). I heard rumors that Belichick had a coaching budget and his salary was linked to that (ie the less he spent, the more he got). Don’t know that to be fact, but the Patriots generally had one of the smaller coaching staffs with guys wearing multiple hats.

Edit: Kraft was not the one that didn’t want to give Brady that very reasonable 2 year/$50m deal. That was Bill. Unfortunately, Kraft sided with the wrong guy there, but I don’t think it was about money.

Vincent Viola owns the Florida Panthers. Originally from Brooklyn, still lives in NYC. No interest in hockey until he bought the team.

Jacobs may lack passion, but they don't really meddle and they spend to the cap.

Kraft has been an absolute disaster for a few years at least and has not allowed maxing out the cap ever year or going over as you can in football.

Imagine for a second..... We won multiple Stanley cups between 2011-2014 and Chiarelli decides, I think Bergeron is a has been and we should move on. Jacobs agrees and we let Bergeron walk. The B's sign a washed up center to replace him, spend no money on the rest of the roster, and miss the playoffs. Bergeron wins the cup with his new team and declares "still gas in this tank." Jacobs freaks out, spends to the cap the next year and the teams squeaks into the playoffs and gets shellacked round one. Jacobs, satisfied we're now going in the right direction, rests back on his laurels and allows Chiarelli to compile a coaching staff of flunkies, imbeciles, and bafoons that aren't even a fit for the open positions, but hey, they're free. The team then spirals into one of the worst seasons in Jacobs tenure as owner, constant media scrutiny, players calling people out, the whole shebang. Jacobs says "I'm gonna ride with my guys" and the next season is even more of a disaster. Jacobs fires Chiarelli, the coaches, and then installs an AHLaAssistant coach that he has always liked and whom he promised the job to as coach and a rando zamboni driver as GM. The Bruins, as they're one to do, put out a smear campaign against Chiarelli leaking stories of how it was his decision to jettison Bergeron and a whole documentary is released glossing over the multiple Stanley Cup Championships but demonizes everything Chiarelli.. The year goes predictably but almost comically bad. BUT! There's a silver lining...... we just need to lose one game and we get the first overall pi.......

So I asks ya..... would anyone give a f*** at that point if Jacobs made a statement similar to Kraft?

Jacobs recently has shut his mouth and spent up to the cap.

Kraft is constantly in the media and has been bottom 5 in spending in the NFL the past few years.

As I said in the post game thread, Bob Sweeney announced last night that they will hold the gala fundraiser and celebration of the Jacob family’s 50 years of ownership.

That is half of this franchise’s existence.

I was born in 85, so was not around for the first 10 years of owner

I grew up hearing about how the team was always competitive, but one or two players away, and then ownership and management would not spend the money two of our extend.

I fell in love with the sport and with the team anyway.

30 years into the family’s ownership, the big walkout happens, resulting in a lost season. The old man and the hardline owners who championed him got their salary cap.

They essentially broke the players union and implemented the 24% rollback on existing salaries.

The Bruins badly misplayed that situation from a teambuilding standpoint, and we know the results. The franchise bottomed out, they doubt they’re superstar player, and fans stop showing up at the games.

And since then, it’s been pretty good and at times great. But now it feels like it may truly be over, and this franchise is at yet another turning point. Forget about the playoffs this year, and think about the bigger picture. Who do you want in charge of rebuilding this hockey organization?

Patriots fans can at least rest easy at night, knowing that nobody is going to take those six Super Bowl trophies out of the case.

Yes, he’s running a business and yes he’s entitled to make money, but it’s worth noting that he was the last owner to come up with something and the plan was laughable. That said, it comes down to results, one cup in fifty years is really bad. I’m not sure why it seems like some fans give him the benefit of the doubt but I’d rather have Kraft and 6 superbowl wins than the status quo of the Bruins.

As everyone else mentioned, the ice might be the worst in the league, partially because of the Celtics playing on the court. Which btw if you’re collecting rent from the defending champs, you can’t go out and buy a new ice machine? Unfortunately most billionaires are penny pinchers so this tracks. It’s going to get really bad in Boston once the Celtics are sold to some corporation who will cut costs or FSG.

To fix it would require major renovation work. Why it was allowed into the design in the first place is a legit question, though.

I can't remember the exact details, (@Fenway help lol) but it has something to do with the sub floors below the arena floor, so renovating would I believe, call for the garden to be closed for a significant amount of time. I wish they would just do it- if the Yotes can play in a college arena, the Bruins could move to an alternate location for a season if needed to get decent ice. But I understand why they won't, not after all the millions poured into the building complex to make it a 'destination' spot.

The majority of teams have basketball in the same building. MSG certainly does. That barn is the oldest in the league and I don't hear any complaints about their ice. It is well known that TD has had an insufficient ice plant since day 1. The ice is horrible, regardless of whether the Celtics play on it or not.

I have zero doubt he AND Jacobs want to win, I just wish Bobby Orr heard the deal Jacobs offered him to stay in Boston.

I would have to think Orr in the mix all these years the B's may have looked different.

Imagine saying no if Orr wanted you to come to Boston to be on his team that he had ownership in?

Oh man talk about what if. Even if he had had to retire when he did, I can't imagine any player not wanting to play for a team with him on it in some capacity.
