We're going to trade Nick Robertson or Rodion Amirov for expansion draft fodder?

Why would we trade prospects that good?

Beyond the big 4 we've got all sorts of interesting secondary and tertiary prospects like hallander anderson holmberg Hirvonen Ovchinnikov abbruzzese abramov niemela kokkonen kral Vehviläinen etc.

Those are the only 4 I see holding the value to get these kinds of deals done. I don't see any team really wanting those secondary players very much. Even if they trade us a player that don't want to lose for nothing, they still lose another player, so it's not a straight 1 for 1 value situation.

Trading Kerfoot for a 2nd round pick might seem like you got a free 2nd round pick, but now you lose Dermott too.

It's not only top prospects that get traded.

What do you think we're getting for a guy like Abruzzese?
He has little worthwhile value in a trade. He's an in house prospect who either works out or we see him being a Bracco and failing. His size, production, age, and fit make him a guy no team would seriously want at this stage.

He didn't play hockey in the NCAA this year. He's going into his 22 year season and probably has another 2+ years of development in NCAA and AHL before he's ready for an NHL shot.

Very longshot prospect who most likely won't make the NHL

I guess “serviceable” for “parts” of a season isn’t quite what I’m looking for.

The third line is important, and I want somebody who is “good” for at least “most” of the season.

Oh yes, now tell me who this paragon of virtue is and how much he's going to cost?

There are quite a few good 3c options hitting the UFA market this year.

My preference would be Erik Haula, who likely comes in at around 2.25 and 2.5. He’s better than Kerfoot, so even at 3.5 it’s an upgrade.

I was watching a clip about how Tampa might lose some of their forwards, that got me thinking about how Toronto can take advantage of the expansion draft and do a quick reset + I just recently watched Money ball and they talked about how you are buying runs, I guess the equivalent in hockey would be buying goals.

Would it make sense to get Seattle to pick 2 good players around 5 mil per with contract years remaining and trade Mitch in their place, for example you look at TB, they have Gourde at 5.1 mil and Kilorn at 4.4 mil. Gourde scored 17 goals last year, Kilorn scored 15, is their 32 goals at 9.5 million better than Mitch's 20 goals at $10.9 mil? Not saying we can get those two specific players but players with similar salary and similar production should be avail in the expansion draft. After next season Mitch's actual salary is $8 mil per year but his cap hit is $10.9 mil.

Seattle has to pick 31 players, they can't fit 31 players on their team, two for one deals make sense for them. Picking up players with high cap hits like Mitch, with lower AAV salaries makes sense for them too. Picking up an All Star in the prime of his career makes sense too.

How many is a bunch? Who is in that bunch?

Sandin is one, if healthy, he is opening roster next year.

Not sure what we have in Lily or Robertson. Lily for whatever reason is not getting the opportunity that I think he should get. Leaf brass don't seem to have any eagerness to try him out on the big team. Robertson based on last year is not even close to a NHLer. Those are the top 3 in my mind.

I would say a good 6 or 7 will be banging on the door even just this coming year.

Sandin
Liljegren
Robertson

Hallander
Anderson
Amirov
Kokkonen

Hopefully 2-3 of them become regulars, and 1-2 of them perform closer to a top-6/top-4 caliber of play.

That's for just this coming season.

If all those guys have a chance to make this year’s roster, we won’t have to worry about playoffs performance issues…

It’s still surprising that some local media think leafs might go 4-4 route, even after the trade.
That’s just some galaxy brain shit right there.

i feel like a lot of people sleep on Mikhail Abramov who might be the best prospect in the Maple Leafs system and plays Center.

tbh he's not my favorite prospect!

not sure he cracks my personal top 10 for the leafs.

but i can see why some would disagree. he has moves.

Which way did they end up going?
