Ovechkin only comes here if he wants to come here.

Because he’d need to if we could fit him under the cap

Not really.

While JT is a hell of a player, he's nowhere near what OV has accomplished.

I live in the DC region. Hockey was barely on the radar screen before OV got here.

Fair enough, I'll agree with you there. I guess it'll also depend on how quickly they can retool. If Oshie gets picked up by the Kraken, it might be hard to make them a contender.

Caps have a lot more problems than Oshie.

Backstrom is losing a step. Kuznetsov has declined the past few years. They have blueline issues and the team is older than most. They also aren't the quickest team in the league.

They also have a crap prospect pool. They gave up a Kings ransom for Mantha which was stupid in my opinion.....

We'll see i guess...

I agree with all that.

If you're Ovechkin, you don't really bank on winning another cup there I don't think. I do think he'll get to chase his record anywhere, Washington included. But I guess it all depends on what his intentions are.

I read they're looking to trade Kuznetsov due to his inconsistency since winning the cup.

No, let's trade him for an up and comer and sign a free agent.

If someone offered you a Cale Makar and OV along with maybe another pick for Marner alone, you wouldn't take it?
Sure I'd take it. Washington doesn't have a Cale Makar to offer though, and if they did, they wouldn't offer him for Marner

Yes, Kuzi will be moved. I'm almost 100% sure of that. They need to clear cap space.

In the local news here today, OV came out and publicly stated he wants to retire in DC.

Besides, OV makes just as much money in DC (if not more), on endorsement deals.

Not suggesting we do a straight trade for OV. I'm saying you can trade Marner for a ransom thanks to his front loaded contract, and then sign OV for free.

What are they going to do with Kuznetsov's cap space though? Doesn't sound like a retool then?

Kuzi's cap space would go to resign OV.

The problem is twofold:

1) who is going to take Kuzi with 4 years left at $7.8m per year.

2) if someone does take Kuzi, the money gets allocated to OV. But they'd have no cap space. So, they'd have to ship out cap somehow if they want to retool or upgrade.

Thankfully I'm just an armchair GM.

We have created a team with two way 200' complete players. Why in the world would we bring in a guy who is everything except that?

Marner is a better player than Ovechkin anyway. This is just a thread looking for reaction. :thumbd:

Sounds like fan bias. I don't think anyone thinks Marner is better than Ovechkin.

Would Colorado even trade Makar for McDavid?

Hes the most valuable defenseman in the league and they have a loaded top line. You couldnt pry Makar out of Colorado for anything.

That's a fairly big if that you're treating like a forgone conclusion.

Mitch Marner makes $10.9M against the cap. The cap is flat. Moving him will not be a substantially cap negative move.
