Corey Perry to the taxi squad?

Looks like Montreal. Dubas missed out here, IMO.

Dubas probably did not want him. He'd be on the taxi squad here, whereas on the Habs he can at least be on the main roster as a 13th/14th forward alongside Frolik (although unlikely more than that given their RW depth).

It's not like there are still a number of guys who can fit on our taxi squad still available (Lewis, Sheahan, Shore, Boyle, etc.). The question is whether any of them are willing to sign just to end up on the taxi squad. They are likely still looking for better elsewhere and then may circle back to at least end up on a good team's taxi squad.

I think it’s obvious he didn’t want him. I would have brought him in over Vesey or Spezza.

If I'm targeting a guy at this point, it's probably a guy like Shore (or Sheahan)... a guy who can provide depth at C, who is good at faceoffs, can PK....

Looks like we'll be seeing him a lot. Maybe there wasn't interest? Maybe Perry didn't want to sign earlier when the Leafs conducted most of their business?

They are fighting for different spots though. Vesey is a LW who could be in our top 9, while Spezza has the flexibility to line up at center and has already shown to be a good fit in our locker room. Perry does not have any of those things.

It would be more like Simmonds vs. Perry, and Simmonds is better at this point.

The one guy I have some inside info on:

He wanted to come to the Leafs at the beginning of the off-season and the Leafs had interest. Then the Leafs then signed Thornton, Vesey, and Simmonds (all better players), and told Perry they werent going to be sending him an offer.

Perry hasnt been remotely useful since 2017-18. Its really not a loss.

Spezza became redundant the moment Thornton signed. I don’t mind the addition of vets, a year too late but better late than never. Another player with edge like Perry would be my preference the roster is not so perfect that he couldn’t be swapped in for.

I would say Sheahan is the only one left who can fill that role, assuming Boyle is done. Gauthier too, but he has signed a PTO with Arizona and likely does not sign here.

Nick Shore is not very good, but I guess he is the type of guy you could just throw on a taxi-squad or in the AHL for depth. He is really the only other guy on the list who can fit the bill to some extent outside of Sheahan, Boyle, and Gauthier. Devin Shore is not a center and not very good. He could be an option for the Marlies, but I wouldn't play him much in the NHL if I had that choice.

Corry Perry grew up as a huge Leaf fan he would jump at the chance to be a Leaf. He would not sign to sit but play. Put him with Jumbo Joe on the 3 line and second pp unit and he would have a great season. We could afford him at 1m. He will likely get more somewhere else.

If we can sign him it would be a huge boast to our roster. Mean and plays for keeps.

Wrong....he was a big Habs fan.

Yep a good pk guy was/is also a need. IMO, Marner needs to be removed from the unit.

Ya.. agreed, Nick Shore isn't great.. but he hasn't been bad at faceoffs, and somewhat effective at PK's the last couple of years.... but at this point, I'm only looking at Taxi Squad, desperation call up material... someone you really hope you don't need, but are glad you have there, if it becomes necessary. Plus, I still think one of our weaknesses, is a C who can PK.... I think you've discussed Kerfoot's success in the Play-ins there, and if he can translate that, into full season success, then it's a non-issue... otherwise, our guys taking faceoffs on the PK are worse than last year.

Looking at Corey Perry.... do people really think he's going to clear waivers to be on a taxi squad? Even on the Habs, at some point he's going to be on the taxi squad.

If the Leafs have a great season, it won't be due to the veteran forwards who got pasted on to the bottom of the roster. It will be built on the young stars having great seasons and some replacement level cogs doing their jobs on the 3rd/4th lines.

IMO he won’t see a taxi squad unless he has absolutely nothing left.

Disagree entirely. Veteran influence is exactly what the team needed to push the young players to show up every night, play the right way.

Can't wait to watch 10 games of Perry facewashing Jumbo after the whistle - I hope it doesn't ruin their post-game shuffleboard plans

This team has had plenty of veteran influence every season including last season (Andersen, Barrie, Ceci, Clifford, Rielly, Muzzin, Spezza, Tavares - all at least 7 seasons in the league). IMO it's the young stars who need to have that eureka moment where they realize there's another level of effort and sacrifice to winning in the NHL.
