Controversial opinion: I'd rather we lose big this year then barely make the playoffs

It'll be tough as a fan, but even a 10% shot at getting Bedard is worth far more then throwing together some pointless run at the end of the season only to get beat in the playoffs. Its clear we aren't a team that can compete well this year and Bedard is a generational talent. He may not pan out but more likely then not any team that gets him will be contender for the next decade.

Just No...

We aren't getting Bedard or a lottery pick. And we aren't getting embarrassed anymore. Losing badly this season would likely create doubt and divided opinions in the lockerroom.

We need a team that's in the hunt all year long, and just missing the playoffs will be an infinitely better thing for a team that already has its big dollars locked up long term on a super young core.

The thing about not getting 1st in this draft is that all of Michkov, Carlsson and Fantili are looking like #1 ovr prospects as well.

Leo Carlsson is crazy. a 6 ft 3 Stutzle with maybe even better hands and playmaking. Michkov and Carlsson are right there with Bedard for me.

Great year to tank. Not that I want that but with Norris out and potentially more injuries who knows.

The team has too much talent up front to be competing for a top 4 pick. As much as they are going through a rough patch now, they will turn it around and be a middle of the pack team by the end.

Kind of tired of the losing. If this is a bottom 10 team again we're going to have bigger questions about the core because the rebuild probably hasn't worked. That's like the darkest timeline.

This recent losing streak stings but… I think we can all agree that the play of this team so far this year has been significantly more competitive than at any point in the past 3 years.

Between bounces, crappy defensive systems, injuries to core players, getting new players (including rookies in key roles) to gel etc we are still in every single game, couldve won each, have our goals against inflated by empty net goals…

Things will even out throught the year, but it doesnt “feel” like it when we see how the eastern standings are so far to begin the year. This adds undue pressure.

20 games is a great measure of this team considering our schedule. If we are not atleast .500 by then, there will be moves made.

Hold tight and enjoy watching these highly entertaining and competitive games.

Being in the basement after clearly making moves to be playing competitive games late in the season would be pretty disastrous. Especially considering as previous posters in this thread have, we still have some potential core pieces to re-sign.

Won't be playoff competitive until they make a big addition on the backend

No more Hamonics/Holdens, Sens don't need passable players.

They need a legitimate top 4 player who can shoulder a lot of responsibility

The team will likely be making changes in the front office and behind the bench within a year or so as well, which will help. Shortly after the team is under new ownership the front office will be cleared.

Yeah I don't disagree with you. I'm saying that if the team implodes and is in the running for Bedard we are in a very bad spot.

I don't think it's going to happen.

Don't worry, we'll go on a late season run that makes everyone optimistic about next season.

It is a nice draft so if we completely collapse that's a silver lining.

Weren't they talking about draft lottery changes? Like, if you win one of the top 3 picks on year, you aren't eligible to win the draft lottery the next? Maybe that would increase our odds, assuming they don't go all the way back to the SJ pick we used for Stutzle to eliminate draft lottery eligibility.

We definitely need that top 4 D.

Holden has been good for us but he's big and old so he's slowing down. At this point he should be a 7th D.

Hamonic is alright as an aggressive stay at home D. He's just getting too many minutes for where he is, which is also regressing.

Without changing too much, you would ideally have this:

Chabot-zub
Sanderson- top 4 D
Brannstrom -hamonic
Holden

Yeah, for me it's either get a top 3 pick, or make the playoffs. The worst situation would be the no mans land in between the two.

If we make the playoffs, great!

If we miss and win a lotto pick, great!

this but if we lose and end up in the lottery then i want it to be after us giving our younger players a chance to see how far away we truly are

give JBD/Lassi/Greig/Crookshank etc a chance and if they can make an impact in certain roles then great we are closer then expected, if they cant then some hard decisions maybe needed

I can't do anymore ugly hockey.

The biggest story of the Dorion era will be he could never ever meet his own teams expectations - he traded for Duchene thinking he was a top team and his team collapsed, two years ago he wanted to get off to a good start, last year he wanted to get off to. good start, this year he wanted to get off to a good start, Alfie comes and Alfie goes, his coaches are washed up or not ready.

not meeting expectations after years is a drag

Ya, I get it. That's what people want for sure.

Having said that, we are the 15th seed in the Eastern Conference. We'll need to climb 7 seeds to get to 8th (and wildcard). We need to string some wins together fairly soon. American Thanksgiving is in 20 days.

I’m sick of losing.
So is everybody. Water is wet.

Not a fan of this opinion. We don't need more offensive power, we're pretty stacked in that department already. We need to beef up the D and winning the draft won't help us there. We also need to give the Cat and Zub reasons to stay. Losing our way into the lottery won't achieve that.

Yes but I’m so sick of losing that i wouldn’t be happy to lose this year to get bedard. I want to battle for the playoffs more than I want bedard

A lot depends on the person's definition of success and the timeline in which that success occurs.

There has to some kind of balance between long term and short term objectives. You can achieve more than one objective at the same time. Things can be accomplished simultaneously versus just in a sequential fashion. In illustrating this point, I'll use the most extreme example by saying our competitive window will be longer than this year. Our core is still very young, so that alone suggests our window will be several years.

Further, the amount of time it took for Sanderson to go from the draft to be in our NHL lineup and contributing wasn't very long at all. To use an expression, cleverness is good, but patience is better although there will some risk and pushback in even suggesting this I suspect.
