In my altered states of conscious as of late, Murphy is who I want the Wings to target to pair with Chiarot, moving Holl and Johansson to the 3rd (and Gustafsson can rotate in I guess, ugggggh).

What would you Windy City kids have to say about something around Murphy with some retention for a 2nd to start? We'll have to send something with value back still, but unsure how much.

Offer a late first (doesn’t have to be 2025) or don’t bother. Don’t want your second plus a depth prospect nobody has heard of. Top 4 RHD who at 50 % is dirt cheap and you get the extra year. Will throw in a Ryan Donato for good measure.

Not necessarily an "unknown" prospect, but someone who isn't ASP, MBN, Cossa, Mazur... you know the "1A" tier prospects.

And maybe a roster player of a needed position? Just trying to gauge whether anyone/anything is worth a swap between the Hawks and Wings.

Sorry. The royal “your”. Wasn’t intending to reply to anyone in particular.

Oilers would be a great fit. So would Leaf’s. He played with OEL in Zona when they were younger. Cats would also be a fit.

Guys like Murphy get a good return at the deadline. He’s playing well as a number 4 D. Hits like a truck. Retention probably gets a contenders first we could also make a package with someone like Donato included.

Like Trey Augustine and Marco Kasper?

What is Hawks actual needs? Just any young roster players? Prospects? Draft picks? All three?

More picks mostly, enough B prospects already (crowded) given nobody is giving up an A prospect. They could settle for a 2nd, but then also just keep him since he has a year left on his deal and it's not like they have to put Rinzel/Levshunov on the NHL roster ASAP.

This is the exact move I’d like Bowman to make. It would probably have to be for like a second and a third though as the Oilers don’t have a 1st this year

I would unquestionably take Murphy over McCabe.
I expect this will happen later in the season when we have accumulated some more cap space.

McCabe (retained) and Lafferty trade different.
Half off Murph might get KD a 1st, or a 2nd at least for sure, but not both and the fifth is probably more than Donato would get on his own, so the 2 combined don't get a 2nd on top of Murph

I disagree on Donato’s worth. He’s a decent 3rd liner on a good team and would be a great fit on a true contenders 4th line.
The top teams already a good top 9 and top 4. What they pay for at the deadline are exactly what Murphy and Donato are. A 2nd pairing guy who is good in his own end and can kill penalties to put on the 3rd pairing and a good 3rd line talent who can pitch in but is generally solid defensively and can handle playoff style hockey.

Exactly. These two are the embodiment of deadline acquisitions for Cup contenders. I'm not even super high on Murphy but at $2.2m this season and next, that's next to nothing. Any team looking to bulk up their defense would benefit from having him as their #4 or #5

Fair enough, but again, he's just off to a hot start & alot could change in the next 4 months. He's been waived around the league more times than I can count, so guys like that don't tend to get much at the best of times

The price seems like a late deferred 1st here @ 50%.

If he's healthy, Murphy @ 2.2M for 1.5 years is very nice value.

But that's a big if. AFAIK conditional picks based on games played aren't allowed anymore? If they were, it'd be a lot more palatable for the team trading for him.

Waived around the league more times than you can count? … explain.
Also except for the year he was injured he’s managed to hang around the 15 goal per year neighborhood while playing a solid 2 way game as a bottom 6 asset.
We can have a discussion but not if you’re going to make things up.

Feels like Jake McCabe trade all over again, but I think McCabe is better. I could see 2 2nds which for the Hawks, IDK if that makes any sense to do that. They have more than enough picks.

Jake McCabe has worked out beautifully I'd take a chance on Murphy

As an Oil fan, I’d have no problem moving a 2026 1st + for him at 50%. Would preferably add another asset and a 3rd team to get double retention.

It's been a few years, b4 he ended up with Seattle. He was no QO'ed twice as an RFA too, by Minny and Seattle. He's found a home with the Hawks and he seems productive, but he still plays limited minutes on a very bad team and doesn't kill penalties, so on a contender he could find himself a healthy scratch pretty quick.
