Weird choice of terms? Who’s more valuable? Objectively speaking, the guy with recent MVP awards. Or the guy with more career earnings. Or the guy who can be used to sell way more merchandise.

Who gets my team closer to the Cup over the next five seasons? Well if the choice is between McDavid at his current cap hit (and whatever he negotiates for his next deal a couple years from now) and Hughes plus the difference between his deal and McDavid’s (currently $4.5M, likely a good size bigger after McD’s next deal), I’ll take the great-but-inferior-but-also-far-cheaper player. Those many millions in cap savings makes a big difference in rounding out a team.

It’s McDavid. 37.5% of you are thinking way too hard about this. McDavid only makes 2 or 3 mil more than most superstars. Hughes has to prove he can score 150 points, 3+ Ross’s, and be capable of a 40 point playoff campaign before any supposed AAV argument comes into play.

The Devils would trade Hughes for McDavid without batting an eye. This is like comparing Crosby to Patrick Kane. Amazing HoF talent but there’s still a level of separation between the two.

Right now Mcdavid but if Hughes as a 120+ points season could be him

Mcdavid is proven. Hughes is really good but I doubt he gets to Mcdavids level.

On a side note you really have to wonder when the best player in hockey says enough is enough and demands to be traded. 9 YEARS in and he still has never had a real goalie. Just a shit show of has beens, never was in net. Its comical at this point. They have the best player in the world and refuse to at least shore up the other most important position in hockey. Im not saying go get shesterkin or Vasi but you either have to have a real goalie or real D core. The oilers have neither.

Hughes is a great player, had a great season last year and is playing unreal right now. But he's not McDavid and chances are he never comes close. McDavid is going to end up top 5 all time and is still in his prime. Contract or no contract, Hughes isn't anywhere near that level/value.

He only needs 103 points in his final 76gp. Seems pretty doable considering he's got 116 points in his last 84gp. I'll go on record and say that if he stays healthy, it's more likely he breaks 130 points than it is for him to fall short of 120.

McDavid is obviously amazing but it's hard to ignore the differences in age, AAV, and contract term.

You are factually wrong - it's definitely more likely he falls short of 120 than it is that he tops 130.

There's a small possibility he breaks 130 - and maybe you predict it'll happen, but it doesn't make it very likely at all.

As for poll - this is McDavid. When you get the best player in the league, I don't care about AAV.

If it was Gretzky or Lemieux maybe but Mcdavid is not on that level. For exemple who in his right mind would not take Draisaitl at 1m over Mcdavid at 11m?

You can make extreme hypothetical examples. The difference here isn't 10M, it's 4.5M.

On the Devils, 4.5M is the equivalent of John Marino. If I offer to give you McDavid on your team, would your decision on if yes/or no you take him come down to whether you can afford to add John Marino to your roster or not? It's silly...

McDavid hs been injured through the years. And has played way too many minutes. Have to think wear and tear will settle in because ofvthis. And Hughes is cheaper and younger.

I might take McDavid the next two years if my team is in desperate need of a cup before rebuilding. Otherwise...Hughes.

4.5M for the 2 years after this one, then it's likely 6.5M (prob 7+) for 4 years after. That back portion is some serious wiggle room.

Factually wrong? Would love to hear the facts here.

He has 116p in his last 84gp, despite playing a large chunk of those games hurt after the ASG.

For 130 points, he needs 113p in his final 76gp. Using his pace over his prior 84 games, he would score 105 points. In those 76 games, leaving him with 122 for the year.

Now that's including a sample that is tainted by injury. Ignoring that injured period, he's got 84p in 56gp since the start of last year. If he continues that pace over his final 76 games, he'd finish with 132 points.

Obviously he's not going to score 232 points, but his underlying numbers through his first 6 games are consistent with a player who should be scoring at a 145+ point pace with average puck luck.

I think people need to watch Hughes more if they haven’t this season, he looks far scarier than I’ve ever seen McDavid look. McDavid doesn’t have the same swagger or control over a game, McDavid just does everything fast. Big whoop. Hughes does it with elegance, swagger, rizz, etc. He plays a much more aesthetically pleasing game, no awkward photos, no dull interviews, the true face of the game (well until a certain someone returns). McDavid may be a zoomer but he plays a boring millennial style of game, vanilla. Hughes & Bedard are futuristic, they play the game of a different era. McDavid has become a relic of the past.
