So the question of this poll is: who is inherently more valuable? Cale seems to be the best defenseman in the league and McDavid is the best forward, so who--in a hypothetical sense--holds greater value in your eyes? Value is another way of saying 'who is better', but is also an assessment of age, contracts, positional importance, career achievements to this point, intangibles, and all the rest. I look forward to a constructive and civil discussion on this one.

I honestly almost started this same poll this morning - but was going to add a caveat of "you get Makar at 50% retention", so half his salary, to make it closer.

If you take them as is - it's definitely McDavid. You need to handicap Makar to make it close.

In Makar's defense - I think he's #2 in the league for valuable asset. But, still easily behind McDavid.

I don’t think the differences outside of their ability are enough to be major factors, which means it’s McDavid since he’s the better player. The salary cap difference is 3.5 million, which sounds like a lot but for the best of the best you pay what it takes. I don’t think the difference is large enough to be relevant. Meanwhile Makar is only less than 2 years younger, it’s and his contract only runs for an extra year before he’s a UFA. Those aren’t significant differences.

Makar's become overrated after the Avs won the cup. We wouldn't have so many Makar threads if he had played for a less succesful team with less star forwards in front of him or Toews next to him.

McDavid is less than 2 years older than Makar. It just doesn't feel like it because McDavid won his first Hart trophy 5 years ago.
