With the threat looming of Connor McDavid not wanting to continue with the Oilers, I think he wants to go to a successful franchise with a good future that can win a cup. Also would be fair to the city of Dallas to recuperate with a new superstar after the Luka Doncic trade. McDavid may feel sympathy for the city. He also will be going to the place with the lowest taxes and a great cost of living, much better weather than Edmonton too.

I propose in the offseason

Jason Robertson
2026 1st
2027 1st
2028 1st
Tyler Seguin (veteran presence)

for

Connor Mcdavid (signed to max contract, 8 years)

Close this McDavid is obviously going nowhere
Why is it obvious? Would be such an EDM move to lose him for nothing.

Also How does Dallas fit this under the cap? McDavid obviously is getting $15+. Robertson helps, but likely need more out.

See this thread for predictions on future cap issues incoming for Dallas.

Only way anyone gets McDavid is if he signs as UFA or demands trade. 3 late firsts and a top line winger with a cap dump would be beat by many teams if there is a bidding war in trade.
But he wants to go to a winner with a future. I could see only 4-5 teams McDavid would go to. Don't know a team with a better outlook future wise than Dallas atm.

Little over valuing your guy there. No GM would move oettinger, Johnston and Robertson. Not even for McDavid.
Yeh, maybe replace Robertson with a top 4 RD.

No reason to move McDavid unless Oilers will be filling multiple holes with top quality players.
They wouldnt want 1st rd picks. Legit starting goalie, legit top 6 replacement forward + a good RD or 2 would be the needs on Oilers.

Maybe if Islanders want to retool instead of rebuild and McD is willing to sign there:
Sorokin + Pulock\Dobson + Pageau\Barzal

Hes wife just opened a bar in downtown Edmonton and his best friend extended for 8 years you dont think he would of told Drai if he had any intentions of leaving no chance Leon extends if he wasnt sure Connor was staying

The whole management will get fired before McDavid goes anywhere

For shits, cap issues

26-27 goes to $104
27-28 goes to $113.5

Here is a mini picture doing the bare minimum Id say. Can easily argue McDavid and Harley would make more and the team is pretty gutted as is. Leaves nothing to pay depth players with, let alone pay anyone else to come in.

Sadly can argue, no team can win with McDavids cap hit.

No thanks. I love McDavids game but your goalie situation is awful. Why would Dallas want that? Oettinger is a top 5 goalie. You need that to win.

lol bff. You might be right, but this is a life changing decsion for him. There is a good chacne he re-signs in EDM and never wins. Thats a holy crap potential looming on his decision. I cant imagine some bar is going to effect that.

he got traded because of money our dollar was struggling at the time
August 1988:

  • The CAD/USD exchange rate was around 0.8280, meaning 1 CAD bought about 0.83 USD, or 1 USD equaled roughly 1.2077 CAD.
  • The Canadian economy was strong, with high interest rates (Bank of Canada rate around 9.5%) to curb inflation, bolstering the CAD. It was near a multi-year high against the USD.
  • Global oil prices were low (~$15/barrel), but Canada’s resource-based economy was less impacted due to diversified exports and domestic growth.
April 2025:

  • The CAD/USD rate is about 0.7210 (1 USD = 1.3868 CAD), a weaker position than in 1988.
  • The CAD hit a five-month high of 0.7233 USD on April 21, 2025, but a low of 0.6794 USD on February 3, 2025, reflecting volatility.
  • Factors pressuring the CAD include U.S. tariff threats, softer inflation (2.3% in March 2025), and a stronger USD. Oil price fluctuations and trade uncertainty add drag, though recent highs show some resilience.

Comparison:
  • Value: The CAD was stronger in 1988 (0.83 USD) than now (0.72 USD), a roughly 13% decline in value against the USD over 37 years.
  • Context: In 1988, high interest rates and economic growth supported the CAD. Today, lower rates (Bank of Canada at ~3.75%), trade risks, and a robust USD weaken it.
  • Volatility: The CAD was more stable in 1988, with fewer external shocks. In 2025, it’s battered by trade policy fears and commodity swings, evidenced by a 6.1% drop in 44 days late 2024.
  • Purchasing Power: A CAD in 1988 bought more USD (and thus U.S. goods) than today. For example, $100 CAD in 1988 got $83 USD; now, it gets ~$72 USD.

Dallas could fairly easily turn around and trade Kane / Arvidsson / Dumba + Stuart Skinner + pick/prospect to a team for a goalie (Kochetkov carolina, Merzlikins columbus, Ingram utah, Gibson anaheim, Grubauer seattle, Demko vancouver). Even if they need to retain money on Kane / Arvidsson / Dumba to get that deal done, they could do that, because all of those guys have only 1 year left on their deals.

The hard part is getting McDavid. The easier part by comparison is making other trades to fix the roster after you've acquired McDavid.

EDIT - "a top 5 goalie, you need that to win" -> this isn't how the NHL works

Jason Robertson
Thomas Harley

Take out one of the firsts and add Harley and maybe Edmonton considers this. This would force Leon to be a 1C, which I dont think he can handle.
