Pretty good timing as far as losses go. Coming off winning 5 of 6 with a nice stretch of time off for Laviolette to get on them to correct some of this loose play.

The lack of emotion the Rangers play with might be a bit of a problem as the season goes on. They are going to see a lot of teams that need the wins more than them as the season progresses. Need to match the intensity.

The lackadaisical play on their side of the ice has been present for the past several games and they've been getting away with it. Tonight, the goalie and offense couldn't bail them out so it finally bit them on the ass.

Too many soft/cute passes leading to turnovers in the zone. Too slow of reactions behind their own net. Too many odd man rushes. Too much space given to the opposition. It's a trend that started a few games ago and this is what was present all the last couple years and it looked like they exorcised themselves from it earlier this year. Now it's creeping back in. It's the only thing that gives me pause from just saying "Tired team. Forget this one and move forward" etc. You want to say coaching matters? Then Laviolette needs to nip this shit in the bud.
Quoted for truth.

We’ve seen better from them this year consistently, but we’ve also seen years of this cutesy bullshit getting them into trouble. So many odd man rushes against lately too by the way.

I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt though. They’ve earned it so far.

LOL....big tooth laying on the ice looked like it hurt bad.......they likely got that all back in place by now . No steak for him today .
Hope he feels better. I haven’t loved his game this year, but I hate seeing anyone take a puck like that to the face.

He also just seems like a decent dude that is liked in the organization. Here’s hoping it wasn’t a concussion.

He is a great coach. They’re lucky to have him.

bern:
I said it would be smart to try and get Sanderson; even if overpay within reason

most of nyhfb:
no, no, need LaF + Perrault more

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

we talk about the need to get max tough physical for POs
and we got dominated by Brady T and crew

If we can swap in currency we can absorb,
Sanderson at end of elc this season
and locked in long term after is a move for a foundation piece add

bern is not ALWAYS right
but more often than not, yes

this is such an instance

They will get a physical player at the deadline some 2 minute a night guy like Liam O”Brien or someone with not much skill other than being a punching bag. It’s a shame that can tell Kreider to be reckless like when he first came into the league

Yes. Just ask Jack Johnson.

I hear you
Howev, we don't want Kreider to break his hand punching out somebody either

need quality foundation pieces
Scanlin + Fortescue look tough but are down the road

Kreider/Zibanejad 5v5 GF% by year:

23-24: 60%
22-23: 63.6%
21-22: 57.1%
20-21: 51.9%
19-20: 57.1%
18-19: 55.0%
17-18: 48.6% hey a bad year
16-17: 53.3%

I don't know where this narrative that Kreider/Zibanejad don't work together has come from but it is blatantly false. It's even more false to say it has been the case lately considering they have 60% of the goal share the last 3 seasons.
Advanced stats are great when you are discussing bottom of the roster players. But when you are discussing top players getting paid top dollar, I don't really give a shit about how good they are defensively or what their expected goals are if they are not actually scoring. And the fact is that Zibanejad is on pace for one of his worst seasons 5v5. And like a lot worse, not just by 1 or 2 points. We are talking almost half the production of last year.

Injuries starting to take a toll? Team looked really out of sync tonight. Wondering if Kakko's defense is being missed as well.
#1. I don't think KK is here for his "defense", is he?
#2. Had he played, he would have prob been crap as well.
#3. It was a collective "team shit show of defense", they obviouslyt were gassed.
#4. Amazing how Panarin seems to be the most consistent, Tro too.
#5. Scheduling is easily to blame, but I guess everybody has these types of runs.
#6. In PGT, somebody said Ottawa isn't "that bad". Yes, you can see that. They have many weapons, and YOUNG weapons at that. Now you can see why Giroux and Tank didn't mind going there. They get better goaltending, I think they'll make PO's.
#7. Rest up boys, come guns a blazing next game.
#8. Man oh man did that 5 on 3 suck. Whatever chance they had, they blew it there.

Well you should.

And what is advanced about counting goals?

And where did I mention the term "Expected Goals?"

I'm not going to even get started about the term "on pace" which is quite possibly the most meaningless term in all of spots and misused by almost everyone. Prorating stats is entirely pointless and does nothing other than to further a previously held agenda. As Fangraphs defines it "On-Pace....This is not how a player will actually perform the rest of the season, and should not be used for anything other than your own personal amusement."

Let's unpack that a bit.

"On pace" can be misused if there is no good theoretical reason why you should be extrapolating the performance over a piece of the season outwards to make a projection.

But if some variable might have changed between previous seasons and the current one, then in econometrics you have a reasonable basis from which to suggest that perhaps the new season's trend might be the 'new norm' if you will.

For Mika, the only real offseason variable changes were 1) New coaching system and 2) another year older.

So unless you think Mika has had a slow start due to age or the system, then sure, there isn't much point with projections.

Kreider and Zibanejad have 9 5v5 goals between them in 24 games played. A majority percentage of a small number is a small number. Just as you criticize personal amusement, there's some copium going on when presenting GF% for 9 total goals.

If it means stinking up for someone who can’t or won’t do it themselves, at least he is willing. Anyone can get hurt even on those freak injuries. I prefer the team defend themselves and each other rather than rely on the refs to do something when sometimes they miss a call.

Why does this team insist on getting blown out in every loss?
A loss is a loss, doesn't matter what the score becomes? Otherwise, why pull Shesty when its 5-2 with 4 remaining? Hurts less than a 1 goal loss? When you can count the losses on ONE hand on Dec. 6, there shouldn't be a whole lot of despair.

Yup I said that in the GDT, this game unfortunately is on the schedule. The team was very obviously gassed 7 games in 11 days including two sets of back to backs with travel both times.

You don't like to ever make excuses but it's been a tough stretch schedule wise the last two weeks really. They were tired and sloppy and made tons of mistakes.

There is a worrying trend over basically the last months we've reverted back to giving up tons of rush chances, I think Vally said we're 27th. Early in the season we were 4th best. Vally outlined on the NYPost Rangers podcast that basically all the Cup winners the last decade plus are top 5 defending against the rush. Cleaning up the rush D is a huge priority. Bleeding rush chances against was a defining quality under Gallant, we need to at least get it up at least being average.

Huh? Quality? Not my definition of quality.

I think pulling a goalie down 3 is dumb. I'm not sure I've ever seen it work and it hasn't been done until a few years ago, maybe the Roy Avs. You can make the case for a loss is a loss but there's a line somewhere, otherwise why not pull a goalie down 10?

Listened to Lavi after the game. Wasn't happy with the up and back hockey in the 2nd period especially. Seems to me that his conclusion is that the defensive issues had more to do with the forwards not getting back.

Fell behind early so naturally started pressing. Ottawa seemed happy to oblige a run-and-gun. With that type of game, trading chances, your goaltender needs to be otherworldly and bail you out as you keep taking chances. Defensive structure went out the door as they went for the tying goals.

Yea, but from what the coach said, I don't think that playing that way at such an early juncture was the coaches idea. Don't forget it was 2-1 early in that 2nd period.

If anything, the early PP goal that halved the lead enticed them to run-and-gun. It put thoughts in their heads that they can tie this up quickly.

They looked a little gassed to me. Lots of hockey.

Need to get back to defense first obviously. Back to a stronger trap game. They are losing their assignments in the neutral zone. Forwards are all over the place. Also lost their backchecking pressure, which has slipped as of late. Fox is still shaking off some rust as well

That's three games in a row now and 4 out of 5 where they gave up a ton of chances and lost the xG battle. It's not a good trend.

It's surprisingly not the forward corps. The top two lines are carrying play. The bottom two lines are fine considering the injuries they have.

None of our defense pairs are performing well.

Fox is either not himself, Lindgren has regressed to the point of dragging him down, or a bit of both, but we need more out of that pair.

We're not built for Fox to be above average. He has to be in the Norris discussion for this roster to work. Those are the cards we were dealt. Doing ok when he was injured was a meaningless blip.
