1. Skate with the Cup around the ring. That way every fan will have a picture with it. Looks much more impressive than small circles.

Agree. The Cup presentation was FAR FAR better when they skated full laps.

The main reason they don’t do this is because there’s too many people and too much crap on the ice. They need to minimize the hazards — clear the ice of everything but the players and a couple of camera guys — so they can move around safely. It only takes a few minutes and it’s the best visual experience of the entire season.

Once the laps are finished, then they can release the coaches and families and media to swarm the ice. Not before.

2. Picking Up Conn Smythe Trophy should be in the Contract. What happened yesterday was awkward and stupid. Show some class, be humble, and learn how to lose. Pick up a trophy or change its meaning. This is a pro league, you have to come out.

Absolutely not. This is disrespectful to the player, especially in a road game where the crowd is booing him. Let the man go be with his teammates, the moment is not about pretending to care about a consolation prize.

3. Make the losing team stay on the ice until Conn Smythe Trophy. Provide them with some kind of award: flowers, silver medal, etc. Just like at international level, or youth level. Losing in the final is no shame.

It’s not about shame, it’s about heartbreak. Nobody wants to see devastated men holding back tears while Gary Bettman gives them flowers. It’s like ritual humiliation, no need for this.

4. Let players thank and say good bye to the fans at one corner of the ice.

Do you mean personally interacting with fans? That seems risky to say the least. There are way too many attention seekers out there, someone will ruin it.

5. Allow people who bought tickets to receive the stubs for the final.

Strongly agree. Not getting a physical receipt/souvenir for a $1000 ticket is ridiculous. This is basic customer service that was ruined by switching everything over to Ticketmaster.

Stop making excuses for him. Imagine being the biggest name in hockey and you're being presented by the league commissioner in what is arguably the most prestigious individual award in pro sports. The Conn Smythe is that highly regarded, it's not some chump trophy.

It depends how you look at it, really. From the perspective that "My team won and i get to say my contribution was THE major reason!" , yes absolutely. You get to be the best player on the winning team in the best league in the world.

From McDavid's perspective, it's great to be recognized and all, but i can see how someone would see it as sending the wrong message. I dont think it was an affront to fans in Florida, it seemed more to me he shows respect to his team by not taking an action that this puts the individual over the team . He was also getting booed when it was announced. I dont know; i didnt think much of it.

I was at the game yesterday. There's got to be a better more official and more fan friendly way of celebrating the cup.

Come to the Québec PEE WEE du Carnaval tournament. Winners circle around the rink, allows photos and regroup in the corner. You will plenty satisfied! ;)

My wishlist for shortening the season involves a reduction in the schedule from 82 to 76 games (cuts 2.0 to 2.5 weeks off the calendar) and cutting the first round back to best-of-five (cuts another 0.5 weeks off). That gets us back to very late May / early June for completion, which would be way better than post summer equinox.

Of course that wishlist and a quarter is worth exactly a quarter, and the NHL would rather just have the quarter.
That's literally why they have the extra games.

Would it have been classier to come out and accept the trophy? Sure. But given the circumstances, being on the losing team, coming out alone after the other team is already celebrating, it's tough to expect him or anyone to. He did what most of us would do in that situation.

Don't blame him at all, even if the absolute classiest thing to do was to accept the trophy. It's too much to ask of him.

Conn Smythe before handshakes makes some sense actually.

Congratulations being at a great game. Our sound was cut off right after they gave the Conn Smythe to McDavid instead of Bob - I thought maybe the fans were yelling something or just a temporary audio glitch?

Exactly. After losing game 7 on your opponent's ice, why would you come back out to get boo'ed off the ice by their fans who obviously weren't happy he got it over Bobrovsky? It isn't like they care to see you get it or anything. Such a non-issue. I'm sure Connor is sitting by a pool with it between him and his hot girlfriend right now anyway

Hockey fan wishes he had the opportunity to watch less hockey
Well, I mean he isn't wrong, the season ending this close to the 4th of July is ridiculous. Shorten the season as far as when the season ends, which doesn't mean less games played. The season should have ended a month ago. It's hard to get into games when the sun is going down at 8:30 at night and it's 90 degrees out up here in the north.

I agree about the Conn Smythe trophy.

The award is a huge deal and we should all be more comfortable with a player on the losing team winning it because it makes the award more meaningful if it is based on something real and not just something nice to hand out to the cup winner.

Part of that means that the winner should accept it. Maybe the moment is wrong. Emotions are high. I could see handing out the Conn Smythe at the awards show later on. It would give some extra time to weigh all the factors and especially the final game

In McDavid's case he probably just hated life. He was focused on the cup. Cup or Bust was more than just a platitude to him. But, I think now he probably appreciates winning the Conn Smythe.

Personally I think the Conn Smythe should be awarded after the playoffs at the same time that awards like the Vezina are awarded. Only award the Cup in the Finals.

It's all about right place, right time and to be totally honest, as much as I feel you should show up and accept your award (and there should be a way for a player to decline it, if there isn't one), I don't feel that awarding that at the Finals is appropriate for reasons given unless you make a Finals MVP award like the NBA.
Ah! I should have read through the thread before posting as you already have the idea. But yes it only makes sense as the moment was just awkward after losing the cup

I am curious as to why there were no icings called in the last 2 minutes? There was one on the Panthers that I thought should have been called, and definitely one on Bouchard, when it was under 20 seconds left.

Always makes zero sense to me when the losing team's player wins the playoff mvp. Each writer should just make 3 votes for each team in a game 7 situation and the winning vote getter from the winning team wins the Smythe.

Then you have to change the definition of the trophy.

Call it the award to the most valuable player on the cup winning team.

That’s what I said. The amount of whining over this is f***ing hilarious. How do you people get through life or even the day if this kind of shit upsets you. Life must be miserable. First world problems 😂

For one thing “you people” was not mad or upset. I just pointed out how you projected in your post. And life is grand, my team just won the Stanley Cup.

Yet here you are, spending your time whining about what Connor McDavid “should have done”, instead of celebrating. Like I said, miserable.

The only one whining is you. I get it, you’re in love with Connor McDavid. He can do no wrong in your eyes. Great. But like I said, if you think it’s honorable and shows integrity to skip awards, skip them all.

Try making sense lol. You quoted me, not the other way around. You’ve quoted me repeatedly. You’re the one taking issue with something a hockey player who doesn’t know you exist did/did not do, after the game and series was over. You’re the one taking issue with something I said.

Somehow, despite all that, I’m the one who’s whining, according to you?

Make it make sense 😂
