Did you factor in minutes, minutes per game, minutes per shift, points per minute, minutes per home, minutes per away, goal per home minute, goal per away minute, points per shift minute, takeaways per point, takeaways per dzone start per shift per minute etc...

?
 
So Matthews is better than Mackinnon offensively while not actually producing more than him.
It's almost like there's more to evaluating a player's offense than copy and pasting contextless raw point totals over an arbitrary time period that is most flattering to Mackinnon, and includes a year for Mackinnon that has zero relevance to the contract that was signed prior to it.
 
You're not going to be able to play hardball with Matthews and his agent - but that doesn't necessarily mean the automatic ask from their side is going to be totally unreasonable. The Leafs can structure salary anyway the player wantsn- something other teams may not be able to accommodate.
