Matheson skating non contact is encouraging. He's listed as upper body, so probably suggests a minor shoulder issue or a broken rib, something like that. If he's stickhandling thats good. Just need to heal and he will be good to go, hopefully a week or two more. Pettersson was week to week instead of longer term, so one would assume he gets back sooner rather than later. That's gotta be a sprained knee, ankle, something like that.

Silver lining is that the team typically plas a more structured brand of hockey during the annual injury plague. I suspect the team will lose 1-2 more core players and proceed to go on a long winning streak. Once everyone is healthy for the playoffs they will proceed to get swept by a significantly inferior team.
Such is life of a Pens fan post 2017.

Has a team ever lost 5 out of their 6 starting defensemen in under 10 games?

You could argue 4 out of 6 since Ceci started game 1 over Riikola, but nonetheless...

Maybe we can use "meme magic" to will them to good health.

I'm honestly out of ideas and explanations.

It could mean either. The NHL doesn't specify. Those on the list could have tested positive, could be quarantining after coming into contact with someone who is positive, or could be quarantining after travel from outside the country. Kapanen was on the list after finally coming over from Finland, for example.

If he was just in contact and tests negative throughout the week then he won't have to stay the full 2 weeks on the covid list... I think.

If I understand correctly this graph, not only did the Caps get very little injuries... but it is never to their stars.

It would explain their constant regular season success. While at least in part.

Also, if I understand correctly, we have beent he winningest teams in the last 10 seasons DESPITE having been the second most injured squad AND those injuries having been mostly to our stars? Incredible.
