Rumor that it could be Atkinson + for Larsson.

Interesting

Rumor is just that, and not from NJ , makes zero sense giving up Larsson.
They have been shopping for a top D since the summer. And have the prospects and young forwards to offer, it's just a matter of finding the right partner. And paying the price.
Byfuglien was on their radar on and off, I wonder if they revisit that? Jets can't afford to keep hm. THey don't seem willing to part with $$ for Ladd either, who is basing his demand on what Kessler got.

Well, I didn't want to short change Columbus, and they are looking for a top 4 defenseman.

I would do Kopitar for Johansen in a heartbeat. The Kings could definitely reload and build around Johansen, Carter, Doughty and Quick for another couple runs over the next 3-4 seasons.

More and more it is starting to look to me that Kopitar's best days are behind him.

I'd like Johansen on this team, but you keep overselling him.

Does he have a beast gear? Absolutely.

Does he play accountable hockey in the slightest? Absolutely not. The guy is an absolute liability in anything but the offensive zone. His possession proxies are appalling relative to his team--even to his own linemates. And he gets as soft of competition as possible.

I'd rather tell Kopitar "**** it, go play as much offense as you want" and make the other wingers play D for him than pick up Johansen and try to get him to play defense.

Now, he'll develop and be a superb player imo, he's still uber-young, but come on.

Lombardi wouldn't get near Johansen, like, ever. That was one bitter, public, contract dispute. It made dealing with Don Meehan look like a tea party.

No *** way.

Johansen received 3 years and $12M on his second contract. Remind me, what did Kopitar get on his second deal? If Lombardi had offered Kopitar 3 years and $12M on his second deal, you don't think it wousld have been contentious?

You think that the Kings' development team couldn't work with Johansen and turn him into a beast?

One guy is climbing the mountain, and the other guy is walking down it. This trade will never happen though. Columbus has a new GM, and when it comes to trades he has shown he isn't as dumb as his predecessors.

Come on!! :)

I dont think it works like that lol

Sorry, but that's exactly how it works. Why do you think Lombardi wanted Daryl Sutter so badly, but then turned to Terry Murray to coach Kopitar and the rest of the kids after the Crawford debacle?

It would have been very contentious. Granted that might have something to do with Kopitar having 79 goals and 204 points over his first three seasons while Johansen had 47 goals and 96 points. It's not an apples to apples comparison.

Very true.

thats much different than bringing in a player (thats paid handsomely) in hopes that you can fix all of his shortcomings (which are great). it would be a big, expensive gamble on Lomardi's part

Bigger than the gamble Kopitar and his agent want Dean to take with him?

At this point in his career, Kopitar also has many shortcomings in his game in the offensive zone that need fixing. Which would be easier and less expensive to fix the problems Johansen has in his game, or those in Kopitar's game?

what's wrong with Kopi's game aside from the fact that he doesnt shoot enough?
I think Dean would take a defensive-minded, responsible guy over a floater, seeing as his philosophy revolves around building "from the net out", but what do I know?

Well, considering that getting to the dangerous areas and shooting the puck is what makes a player like Kopitar effective, PLENTY.

Kopitar's problems right now don't center around him being unselfish. His problem right now is he just doesn't get to the dangerous scoring areas often enough. Right now, he is Anze Perimitar.

Comparing the two is silly. Kopitar got his second deal because he was a far better player.

Kopitar was light years ahead of Johansen the first couple years. In his first 189 games, Johansen had 96 points. In his first 154, Kopitar had 138. Anze had elite center written all over him, Johansen not so much.

Toffoli is a far better comparable, which is why he's signed for about the same money. He's the same age, has put up similar points career wise, and plays better defense.
