We did??? C'mon man! Lighten up. We won tonight.

I commented that this was a tough 3 game stretch coming up. April and that stretch has been discussed in great detail in other threads as well. Lighten up? No idea what that had to do with my response.

OK then, to get your "true playmaker at center" who do you get rid of?
I still disagree with your premise. We create chances. We don't finish a lot of them.

Most of what is created is the occasional individual play (not from crisp passing) in transition or from the point. We also get some off of forced turnovers in the offensive zones (like what Calvert did today). Almost nothing comes from the forecheck and the cycle. All that energy spent ends up wasted.

As far as who to get rid of; that's simple. RJ. Retain some salary or buy him out (I think we can do an amnesty this year - last year if I remember correctly).

The issue isn't who you replace; it's who you are able to get. The only real choice in FA is Stasny.

You really hasn't watched much Jackets hockey have you?

Dude, I watch every game. You don't have to be so condescending when you disagree.
And you still haven't answered the key question. You want "a true playmaker at center", which of our current centers do you replace?

I'm with you here, don't see any reason to make major adjustments down the middle next year. What we need is a talented LW ... maybe someone who can skate, to play alongside of Horton and Johansen.

...Really?
The Jackets desperately a "right place at the right time" player. It used to be Umberger, but now he cannot finish if the puck was right in front of the net.

Gabby would have been perfect had he been 4 years younger and healthy. There are a few guys who will be FA's that would look good, but I'm not sure if they would come here.

Maybe it's time to use our highly thought of prospects for a legitimate scorer.

As for the first part, I got rid of it (before you posted your response). Might have been condescending, but I'm not sure you are picking up on the struggles when we establish the forecheck or how easy we are to defend. We are insanely predictable. Part of that is coaching; the other is that we have too many guys that really can't pass the puck or have what people like to call "hockey IQ". We have players that don't know where to go without the puck and we have players that don't understand where the puck should be going.

As for the second, the editing on this has been brutal. You don't have to get rid of a center. First mistake on your part; you didn't read the first part. You move Dubinsky to wing and you keep him as depth in case of injury. You are working with the misconception that you have to move a center. That is a false assumption.

The guy you get rid of is easy. RJ. Either buy out (amnesty this season) or retain some salary in a trade.

Your target is Stastny; if you look at FA. Otherwise you look at a trade; although that would be tough.

There you go.

Any thoughts on:

Jenner-RyJo-Arti
Foligno-Dubi-Horton
Calvert-Letstu-Cam
RJ-DMac-Comeau

I like Dubi between the kids, but Letestu is an adept passer who can set the table for them, too. I would add that I would prefer Flipping RJ and Horton but Horton won't be put on the 4th line.

Looks good. Though I'd flip Horton to the 4th if you want to. Coach probably wouldn't do it, but there's no need to self-censor.

Editing your post 4 minutes after I call you out for not answering the question is not really fair play. It's hard to me to read what wasn't there when it was posted.

As for the forecheck, I'm the guy who keeps posting "no forecheck = no victory." The struggles of our forecheck is that it's our identity, what we use to create energy, but it vanishes at key times during most games.

As for Dubi at wing, there's a reason he's not there now. He's been tried at wing in New York and again here in Columbus. He simply a better center than a winger.

But you'll get no pushback from me on buying out RJ. That and having Gaborik off the payroll frees up plenty for a free agent overpayment. I just happen to think it needs to be on the wing. You think it needs to be at center. You won't change my mind and I won't change yours. No worries.

#CBJ James Wisniewski’s assist on the Johansen OT winner also made franchise history for most assists by a D-man in a single season w/ 37.

Actually, Wisniewski has 38 assists now. His goal last night was changed to Calvert so he got an assist on that one.

i keep debating if Moulson is our guy

I said "who can skate" ... not Moulson :sarcasm:

There are some options out there, but really, I'd almost rather not give up sacks of money for immediate help. With this lineup largely returning next year - a year older and wiser, no less - we should be in good shape as it is. Patience, and save cap space so that we can keep some of the young guys around. That's what it's about for me.

Fair play? I was only letting you know that I decided to tone it down before you commented on it.

What does that have to do with anything? It doesn't say anything. You do all that work and generate nothing?

I've seen him at wing in Columbus; he was fine. One of the biggest issues we have right now is what happens when one of our top 3 centers goes down. Luckily we haven't had to see that much. If Johansen goes down; we're with Dubinsky on the top line matchup. Not a good situation to be in.

That Dubinsky, Atkinson, Calvert line. It's like watching triplets with Atkinson having the better shot. If their not forcing turnover and creating their own opportunities; they are generating nothing. It's all individual play to generate chances with those three.

I'll be honest. One area of Johansen's game that needs to improve is using his linemates. He generates his own chances fine. Generating for others? Not so much.

Well I got to all 3 Jacket games at Carolina this year. Damn am I glad living in Raleigh We got the move to the East. I picked up a great seat, 16 rows straight up from coach Richards.

Thoughts and views as I seen the game tonight

McElhinney made some really good saves, 2nd goal He could have had but bottom line only 2 got him all night.

First half of the game had little flow, was not exciting, extremely short shifts. Yea the team is not scoring like We would all like to see them but it's more difficult when your on and off the ice in 25-35 second shifts.

I can't stand Jeff Skinner, mostly because his game reminds me of a young Rick Nash. Total cherry picker. Scores goals, but no leadership qualities, plays little defense. Carolina can have him. He made by far the worst play of the night giving us our first goal. Maybe one of the worst plays I've seen anyone make all year. Even the Carolina post game show said that was a bad play for a pee wee player!!! LOLOL

Columbus was by far the more physical team, in the end I think this made the difference. Fewer chances and less quality chances for Carolina. E Staal 25 minutes, 5 shots only 1 of them I recall had a chance. A Semin 21 minutes and ZERO shots. Make no mistake that's Great Defense for a guy with 22 goals to get 0 shots off in 20 minutes.

I had to look twice to see the player Richards put in for Horton was Tropp...from a healthy scratch to play with Ryan Jo? what the *****??

I agree Horton had his best game in while. I have called for him to sit at times, but we don't have the offense and just have to hope He gets going if we want to do more than make the playoffs.

AA can play with any line. He's incredibly intelligent and finds ways to get the puck in the net. Goal and an incredible assist tonight.

2 Points, 2 Points, 2 Points. At this time of year with the Olympic break and so many games jammed into the last 2 weeks of the season you better be glad to get 2 points any time against any team.

Let's get 2 More Tuesday!

I agree about it being forechecked or pressured that kills us and that we have only one strategy -- shoot from the point (or score on a lucky breakaway).

I think the way to address our issues is to acquire a winger who is a threat down low. Like a Vanek or Semin in the offseason.

Then we train all of our defensemen to shoot through a screen. Have them do it over and over and over again.

Then we train all of our own players on how to block better. Too many shots are getting through in our end and we should be near the top of the league in terms of blocked shots because of our "identity" but we aren't.

One more thing -- Canes have pretty good announcers. Good calling, knowledgeable, talks about both teams' players like they spend a lot of time talking about how Anisimov has a nose for the net and is always in the right place.

It says EVERYTHING about the success of this team. When we're not playing OUR game, we're playing THEIR game. And we don't have the talent to play the Penguins, Blues or Blackhawks game (for example).

No doubt finding the right chemistry has been an issue. We almost have TOO MANY options (and all of them too similar) for Richards to shuffle.

I'll be honest. One area of Johansen's game that needs to improve is using his linemates. He generates his own chances fine. Generating for others? Not so much.

I agree with you on that one. Joey's made some big strides this year. He DOES need to learn to feed his teammates to become an elite center. I would simply add he needs better teammates (wingers) to feed.

There are two teams out there. We simply can't maintain the hard forecheck the entire time. Not from an effort standpoint, it's just other teams are good.

It still doesn't answer anything. If we're expecting to maintain a forecheck the entire time, we're delusional.

There is no question that the Pens are more talented. But they can be beat if you play the game the right way. I'd be more concerned with Boston. The 'Hawks aren't even a consideration at this point; obviously. I would much prefer a first round matchup with the Pens over Boston; even when the Pens are completely healthy.

One last comment. This team can score in transition. They can't create chances on the rush via (neutral zone) turnovers. We can score goals in bunches. We shoot ourselves in the foot, a lot, in transition by trying to make that perfect pass. We can win games without scoring from chances on the forecheck. I can tell you I would much rather have the puck in a Stastny's (that type of player) hands over a AA or Dubinsky on the rush. You have that type of player and you've probably generated another 5 or 6 goals over the course of the year, just in transition. That doesn't even include the additional production on the PP. Most of our forwards make terrible decisions with the puck on the PP.

If you allow the Pens to take the zone with speed, they'll kill you - and they have. So the right way is to forecheck.

The long term solution is to upgrade our talent level (by letting the kids we have develop as well as by trade/UFA) so we don't have to always rely on the forecheck to win over an 82-game season.

This is probably the strongest thing you've posted tonight. This happens too much in the offensive zone as well. It's like our team is a Ford F-150, but we WANT to be a Porsche 911.

I'm not sure you are reading what I'm typing.

If you think you are going to stop the Pens from entering out zone because of the forecheck; I think you are missing the boat. By a mile. Sure if you play in your zone most of the night; you are going to limit their chances. But stopping their transition is more of neutral zone play and backchecking. The D has to stand them up at the blueline or you have to force turnovers in the neutral zone. For the latter, you actually limit your forecheck a bit because your third forward is playing high instead of being hard in on the forcheck. You have to do that with the Pens, you can't get caught in transition the other way with your 3 forwards down low.

It's even more important with that 3rd forward because our d pinches in a lot. I contend that our d might actually pinch in too much at times. I've seen too many times where our 3rd forward is way too high to support the puck because he's too busy covering the d (Jack Johnson) that pinched in all the way to or behind the net (strong side instead of cheating on the weak side).
