Colorado stars close to shattering the empty net points record

and Colorado isn't even that good, even with their current winning streak they're on pace for 99 points and a +15 goal differential over a full season right now, that's like first round road Playoff team level

never would have guessed they had so many empty net goals already this year
Seems like stat padding is top of the priority list this season for them

Kucherov broke the all-time record with 14 last year. We're not even half way though the year and Rantanen is already at 12, MacKinnon at 11.

Is this just shameless stat padding, a marketing gimmick to increase their point totals to serve the NHL star cult or are they just really good at securing games for their team and nobody should complain? What's going on?

I will never figure out or understand people bitching about empty net pts? Then BAN pulling the netminder

All I know is last year this forum was full of Avs fans calling Kucherov an empty net merchant, saying he didn’t deserve the Art Ross, saying he was cherry picking for empty nets etc.

And now that their boys are about to shatter the record halfway through the season, strangely none of them seem to care about it anymore.
I was about to say this. It's actually hilarious the 180 takes around here.

Nate dog done feasting on the kale and chickpea paste since he's got the empty net

Weird, I do not see multiple Avs fans shaming players for EN points like it was last year. What happened?
If someone used this to make the argument to get Kaprizov the Hart over MacKinnon, I don't think many would be arguing.

It'll be interesting to see where the point race ends up. If Mackinnon's ENP are what gives him the Art Ross at the end, then yes there should be a debate. I think most would argue Makar has been the most dominant Av this year start to finish.

I personally look to 5v5 stats (while removing ENP) to give the most accurate representation of relative impact/dominance.

Most Avs fans hope McFarland brings it up during the Rantanen contract negotiation though.

Part of it is multiple empty net goals in some games, goalies being pulled earlier and earlier now, better players out in these situations vs 3rd liners.

Kucherov last year 14 of 144 pts were empty netters (9.7%) and Avs fans lose their minds

This year
Rantanen 12 of 54 pts (22.2%)
Mack 11 of 61 pts (18.0%)
Those are pretty eye-opening numbers haha.

Mackinnen took losing the Art Ross because of empty netters last season to heart clearly.

I haven't been able to watch a lot of games this season, so I check the scoreboard. It's kind of insane how often we get 2 ENG's per game. Maybe after the first one goes in the other team should just chill with pulling the goalie.

In all seriousness, yes, Mackinnon and Rantanen are chasing empty netters like crazy. I was watching some game and they had like a 2:40 shift at the end trying to score empty netter, they were exhausted and it looked comical at that point, but they still didn't leave the ice. They failed to score in this game btw. No sane person will deny that this is stat padding.

Mackinnon has 11 EN points in 20 mins of icetime vs empty net.

Kucherov has 4 EN points in 6.5 mins of icetime vs empty net.

So don't worry Lightning fans, on a per/60 basis, Kuch is still the empty net king.
Just confirming my words. MacKinnon just doesn't leave the ice trying to score empty netter. Kucherov will play a 40 second shift and then Cooper will put Nick Paul on the ice. Feel the difference

Maybe one day Kucherov can earn his coach's trust in the final minutes of a close game.

He already trusts, that's how Kucherov set a record for empty netters last season. He just doesn't need to embarrass himself for 3 minutes hunting for an empty netter, he will be higher than Mackinnon in the scoring race even without these points
