I honestly just don't get why his new Jersey ties matter, but I guess that is a thing for a lot of people

I don't care about his NJ ties since he and his family are Rangers fans anyway. I get he played in our youth program and whatever, but I don't really care to be honest.

I honestly don’t think Palms gets this return. Boston would need to give us Backes to make it fit which makes everything more complicated too
A Boston trade for Palms can be done without Backes. They will include Heinen, but it would mean that we would need to retain salary at 50% for Palms.

1. Danton Heinen
2. Boston 2020 1st Round Pick
3. Jack Studnicka or Urho Vaakaninen or John Beecher

for

Kyle Palmieri 50%

If we agree to take Backes, then we could possibly get another 1st round pick or top prospect out of the deal.

Tampa wins this trade in that Coleman is the best bottom-6 forward in the world right now. He immediately makes the team faster, more competitive, more physical, and more dangerous. He is a valuable asset on the penalty kill, a puck hawk who seems to create scoring chances out of thin air. I think this trade makes the Lightning the clear-cut Eastern Conference favorite, and vaults them over Boston and Washington.

The Devils win this trade in that they just got two more first round picks, essentially. Foote has a cannon of a shot and plays a nice power game. His skating has been inaccurately criticized -- though he needs to work on his first-step quickness, he actually has very good top speed. His upside is as a first-line, scoring winger.

The Vancouver pick (and I expect them to be in the playoffs) should fall in the 20-25 range, in a very strong 2020 class. However, I will say I still don't like the trade. Though the return for Coleman is excellent, I believe the Devils were two defensemen and a back-up goalie away from contending next year. I think the sale of Coleman pushes back this opportunity, and I am less than pleased by that.

That being said, the return was significant.

I love Coleman, was not at all on board with trading him just to trade him, but given where the organization is at and his age + season you had to listen if the price was right. Great work by Fitzgerald making a tough decision and getting an excellent return for a great player.

Well, seems clear ownership is planning on putting a steaming pile of **** on the ice for the next 3 years.

But the bought the team for the space under the ice too, which is what I'm sure they care more about.

I'm just glad I don't work as a season ticket agent right now. You're stuck between a rock and a hard place. Sell tickets to a team that is going to be horrendous for at least the next 2 years

Everyone around the org knows we’re gonna suck the next few years. Anything else is lip service. It’s clear we’re not there and won’t be next year. We’re probably 2-3 years away from being competitive and Blake Coleman wasn’t changing that. 3 firsts, Foote, Bahl and any other assets we get at the deadline will.

I said to so many posters on the main board and here, I didn't want to even entertain the idea of trading Coleman because there is no way we get back for him anything equal to what he brings to the team.

Thanks a lot Fitz, make me look like a fool.

It's not like ownership doesn't want to ice a good team though - a good on ice product means significantly more revenue, in tickets, merch, and advertising.

At least they're not as stingy as jvb was

I think this proves even more that d-men just aren't really available. You need to draft them. Their biggest need is d-men but a big LW sniper is pretty high on the priority list too.

I don't think we will suck for the next "few years." I haven't even lost hope for next year. I know they have their work cut out for them, but if the right guys take a step forward it is very possible to watch hockey we care about until at least March and possibly beyond.

Fitz really has no obligation to go out there and pay that kind of lip service when he might not even be here next year.

If he is here and has control, I believe he will try to make next year’s team as competitive as he can.

He also isn’t going to mortgage the future to do it though. He isn’t going to go out there and hand out big contracts to middling Dmen to force short term success.

Hearing something resembling a negative comment from you is surprising.

I love Coleman, but his timeline and the teams timeline just don't match. We are much more than a back up goalie and two D men away from contending. Maybe contending to be a bubble team. Not to be a Cup contender. IMO, we need 3 to 4 D men, and unfortunately we need a 1 and a 2. The 1 and 2 likely aren't coming any other way but the draft. We also need a legitimate top line winger, also probably not coming any other way but the draft. Even if you want to say we are two or three players away, we are two or three star level players away. We might as well be miles away.

I disagree. I think he had to say we’d be competitive next year after trading a fan favorite win now piece. The reason I say that is because Abbey apparently has an interview dropping tomorrow from an interview earlier today where he says they won’t be contenders for the next couple years.
