It was too good to ignore.
main board joking themselves thinking the pure rentals will return more of this. I would not be shocked if this was the most expensive trade of the deadline.
I honestly just don't get why his new Jersey ties matter, but I guess that is a thing for a lot of people
A Boston trade for Palms can be done without Backes. They will include Heinen, but it would mean that we would need to retain salary at 50% for Palms.I honestly don’t think Palms gets this return. Boston would need to give us Backes to make it fit which makes everything more complicated too
I understand the value was good but I still don’t like it.
Well, seems clear ownership is planning on putting a steaming pile of **** on the ice for the next 3 years.
Tampa wins this trade in that Coleman is the best bottom-6 forward in the world right now. He immediately makes the team faster, more competitive, more physical, and more dangerous. He is a valuable asset on the penalty kill, a puck hawk who seems to create scoring chances out of thin air. I think this trade makes the Lightning the clear-cut Eastern Conference favorite, and vaults them over Boston and Washington.
The Devils win this trade in that they just got two more first round picks, essentially. Foote has a cannon of a shot and plays a nice power game. His skating has been inaccurately criticized -- though he needs to work on his first-step quickness, he actually has very good top speed. His upside is as a first-line, scoring winger.
The Vancouver pick (and I expect them to be in the playoffs) should fall in the 20-25 range, in a very strong 2020 class. However, I will say I still don't like the trade. Though the return for Coleman is excellent, I believe the Devils were two defensemen and a back-up goalie away from contending next year. I think the sale of Coleman pushes back this opportunity, and I am less than pleased by that.
That being said, the return was significant.
I don't think we will suck for the next "few years." I haven't even lost hope for next year. I know they have their work cut out for them, but if the right guys take a step forward it is very possible to watch hockey we care about until at least March and possibly beyond.Everyone around the org knows we’re gonna suck the next few years. Anything else is lip service. It’s clear we’re not there and won’t be next year. We’re probably 2-3 years away from being competitive and Blake Coleman wasn’t changing that. 3 firsts, Foote, Bahl and any other assets we get at the deadline will.

I disagree. I think he had to say we’d be competitive next year after trading a fan favorite win now piece. The reason I say that is because Abbey apparently has an interview dropping tomorrow from an interview earlier today where he says they won’t be contenders for the next couple years.Fitz really has no obligation to go out there and pay that kind of lip service when he might not even be here next year.
If he is here and has control, I believe he will try to make next year’s team as competitive as he can.
He also isn’t going to mortgage the future to do it though. He isn’t going to go out there and hand out big contracts to middling Dmen to force short term success.
That's why I stick around hereTwitter is PISSED. Only bastion of rational discussion on this trade is here right now.
