So I'm clear on the pick condition, if VAN misses the playoffs, we get Tampa's 2021 pick? Or do they also have Vancouver's '21 first and we'd get that?

We have Vancouver’s pick. If they miss the playoffs then we have Vancouver’s 2021 pick.

What I don’t like about it is that it means, I suspect, that we are aiming to be competitive 2 or 3 years down the road. We’ve traded our second best prime mature forward for prospects that are at least that far away.

I don’t know how many more seasons of tanking I can take as a fan. Hopefully “tomorrow” comes some day.

Hope I am wrong.
Trading guys aggressively actually accelerates the rebuild. The more firsts and prospects we get this year instead of two or three years from now means those prospects get here faster. We clearly weren't getting it done with this group and Coleman could walk after next season. Trading guys now instead of next year makes it more likely we will be good in 2 years rather than 3-4

That division is a disaster overall, but they are the best of that bunch right now. They won’t miss.
I think they will make the playoffs but I have a very hard time seeing them advancing beyond round 2. Likely looking at a pick around 20 I would imagine. Hope they can finish at a wild card spot with Arizona missing...

Been reading player reports on Nolan Foote for the last half hour. Common thread: big shot + good IQ.

Sounds like exactly the guy you want lining up next to Jack.

If the devils do pick up the two extra picks this year that gives them a lot of ammo and ability to move up if they want to. I am all for selling vat and grabbing another first.
The firsts are the way you speed up a rebuild. The seconds are nice filler to round out a team but a team as bad as us we need firsts

it’s a big reason 2015 keeps getting brought up. We didn’t have anything to sell to get us multiple first rounders.

it’s hard to rebuild that way. Even harder to do it quickly.

Vats should absolutely be traded.

Can everyone please stop saying it’s a great trade but sucks it’s Coleman. One wouldn’t have happened without the other.

fast forwArd next year this team what do you think his return would be? A 2nd and a meh prospect if any

No one has to stop that. It's 100% a perfectly fine reaction.

Sucks to see him leave in a vacuum, but in the scope of the trade you can't say no. Valid thought to have.

I'm definitely for moving Palms if a similar return can be had with salary retention. But at some point we need to have some vets. Is Zajac alone enough?

I don't like the trade. We trade the one overacheiving player we've had from perhaps the last 15 drafts while the team lacks talent, to get two more shots that are unlikely to reach his level. Foote is a second round prospect; lesser talented brother of two kids of an ex-NHL star. He may become another Zacha but not sure we really need two. Another first rounder would be good for a team with a strong ability to draft NHLers outside the top position overall but our last ten first rounders (other than Nico and probably Jack) are likely to be lesser players than Coleman even if they make more money. Perhaps it's an acknowledgement that the scouts need three shots to hope to pick out a talented kid.

It's Edmonton Oilers trading: asking to be in perpetual rebuild by continually giving up on the present and immediate future. It helps to destroy any remaining belief that we can develop the team's own players into a winning outfit, both in the fan base and the organisation. Presumably it's the kind of trade Shero wouldn't countenance, hence his departure.

We would have never got this return next year. That extra year at $1.8 mil was very valuable to TB

Coleman's salary is easier for a team like Tampa (or any other contenders with limited cap space) to absorb than Palmieri's. To get a similar return for Palms we might have to retain some salary, which we can do, but at some point we do need to keep some good players around. Going full scorched earth and selling everything worth anything off is going to be hard to sell to the fanbase after hearing "trust the process" for the last 5 years.

Zajac - ok
Subban - LOL
Palmieri - Nope, disappears quite a lot
Gusev - still a rookie
Severson - LOL
Butcher - LOL
Zacha - LOL
Wood - i guess I can give this one, dude works his ass off too.

And about Subban, idk dude plays like a rookie when things don't go well and it's concerning. As in he tries to do too much and it makes him play worse.

My point wasn't the age thing, it was having the right type of players. Most of the guys you listed don't fit that category at all. Coleman is one of the few who do.

okay, your post was about age, but I get your point. I agree that Coleman brings good leadership and intangibles that most of our vets don’t, but that’s part of why we got so much for him.

You simply can’t say to this trade. I love Coleman, but this was an easy trade to make.

We need this more then Coleman so we can potentially be a contender for long term.

I’m fine keeping Palmieri around with the Coleman trade. Got better assets than I thought which gives us flexibility with Palms.

Vatanen and Simmonds gotta go though.
