Player Discussion: Cole Sillinger thread

So is thise a criticism of management or a criticism of Sillinger? Let’s discuss the real problem. Is this Rick Nash’s input? You know, the Director of Hockey Operations who played with Mike Sillinger. I would have followed a different path with his development, but we all know Jarmo was in win now mode and desperate for a guy who could play center. So Jarmo definitely gets blame. But he is gone. Who is the guy causing what you two see is a huge overuse or misuse of Sillinger currently? Seriously, if you want to fix a problem you first need to identify what the real problem is.

He's doing his best and gradually getting better, no complaints with Sillinger the person. As for his usage, why would we go after Rick Nash? We don't know who made what decisions so it's worse than useless to blame individuals. And Sillinger is not abjectly terrible this year, just overplayed in my opinion.

It’s really not about how many points he is or isn’t getting. I distinctly remember a shift where Sillinger failed to clear the zone after getting the puck 3 times, then almost took a hooking penalty. He’s not a good passer or a good shooter.
I agree it's not about points for any player, let alone Sillinger, however, pointing to a single point in a game is as ridiculous as many other things noted around Sillinger. It's like me saying... "That backcheck that Monahan missed was inexcusable, and they scored. He's not a good skater and doesn't play defense." And Sillinger has an NHL shot, It's good. He simply doesn't use it enough. That's a fault.
Some are saying the points mean everything.

What I’m saying is him having a comparable amount of points to Chinakhov means nothing, or everything, depending how you want to look at it.

People are free to list the players they think Sillinger is better than. It shouldn’t be a long list. And the players on their should be 4th liners and healthy scratches. True or false?
Again, I'm not sure I get this point either. Comparing him to Chinakhov is ludicrous too. Sure, when Chinakhov is have a good day he's the better play, however, if he ISN'T scoring, he doesn't do much else for this team right now. Notice...right now.

I get it, I'm a Sillinger fan, but I do see his warts. I also see that he is leaps and bounds better than last year and has shown progress in every part of his game. And I'm sure someone can point to his stats that would say otherwise. I'm not saying he's perfect, but I am saying he's 21, has made dramatic improvement and I think the discussion points seem to heavily lean towards what someone in their mid-20's as a classic middle 6 player would be expected to be.

I do agree, he's not getting these minutes on a cup contender and he's not player this role on a cup contender but I ask, who should have these minutes/roles on this team? I won't argue against Voronkov as an option, but if we're discussing development and growth and see what the young players can handle...not a lot of options. I also don't see CBJ going out and trading for an option as it doesn't make sense at this stage.

He still has one very important thing, great competitiveness, he has always wanted to win. With Chinakhov I don't have that feeling (I could be wrong, of course), with Marchenko and Voronkov I do. Od course I just say about Russian.

I was looking at faceoff numbers this morning. We have 5 guys that have taken 100 or more face offs.

Kurally 52.0%
Monahan 51.5%
Sillinger 49.4%
Danforth 48.2%
Fantilli 40.7%

Sillinger is 3 percentage points higher than he had been last year. He is getting close to the correct side of 50%.

And since then Silly has continued to improve on faceoffs.

He has now won 50,1% of his faceoffs this season. Good job Cole!

before anyone gets concerned about the fantilli part of this, both of the guys drafted ahead of him (bedard and carlsson) are in the 30s.
