Quoting this in the correct player thread.

I think there are 2 positives to his going.

Firstly, I know that it must be a very big deal for players to go. If they're in the NHL, that's one thing, but I don't think his development is impeded by skipping a few AHL games to play in the World Juniors. Especially one at home, with fans actually in attendance. It's an experience that many don't get to have.

Secondly, he's going to be a leader on the team and I think that experience is also valuable.

So, he probably won't learn anything on the ice specifically but I think it's an overall positive. My original comment about WJC success not translating to the NHL was more about how the team was chosen this year, and that just because someone had a good or bad tournament, it doesn't really say a lot about their professional future.

Well I think he really wants to go so you let him since he's not in the NHL. But I think other then the experience of it he gets to be a leader of a pro team here so I don't see much added benefit of him being a returning player.

But I agree that what he does in this tournament won't have any bearing on his pro career.

I am not sure about that. The scrutiny can be awful if the team does not do well.

Continued. Shifts from the 3rd period.

In that last video on the two on two. Most players would’ve continued on a street line and hoped that a pass might make it through the defender that was in the way. But Cole smartly moved closer to his teammate with the puck and actually was wide open for a great chance he got a pass. That’s just smarts you can’t teach.

One thing I noticed in his last game. Whenever he looked at the bench between whistles to see if his shift ended , he looked disappointed when he was required to change. Moreso than the typical player. I'm chalking that up as him being eager and wanting to prove himself.

It's called RBF.

That kind of data/observation is not reliable or accurate enough to create a narrative around...

I honestly don't think he's NHL ready yet. He has the tools no question, but one thing that I keep noticing is he's struggling to adapt and needs more time to develop. Similar to Scheifele when he was in his coming years.

He hasn't played enough games to glean that yet imo. He's also only played one in the top 6.

He looked similar when he started in the AHL and after a good 5 to 7 games took off.

I am on the fence still. He has high end IQ that will adjust quickly to the NHL game but he is still a step slow IMO. We'll see how it goes.

If he’s going to spend the rest of the year playing in our top six like some people on here are wanting him to, Id want to see him producing at least at a 40-50 point pace for the rest of the season.

You can’t have any passengers on a playoff bound team, especially if you’re going to be playing with skilled players. Otherwise I think it would be better for both him and the organization for him to be in the the AHL maximizing his development.

Agreed that he will have to produce and contribute to a successful line. One game into his trial though.

Absolutely he will have to produce if he is going to be in the top 6 for the rest of the season. That goes for almost everyone. He has the pedigree and IQ that suggests that it is possible now.

He should get to his 9 games before anyone makes any decisions either way. If he gets to his 9 games it will have been in a top 6 role for 6 of them and it would be fair to expect at least 2-3 points in those 6 games.

At worst, it turns out to be a good 6 game trial for the role he will play next year and in the future, and at best he adds to the group pushing for a deep playoff run as additional offence. Patience is key.

@surixon tagging you because I know you’re really high on him and have been following him closely, and wanted to get your thoughts

Say hypothetically the organization decides they need to move on from Scheifele in a year or two and build around the next window. Would Perfetti realistically be the 1C of that window, or is that Dubois’s spot to lose? Will Perfetti even be a C in his prime or do you think we keep him on the wing?

That is a very good question and hard to answer as we don't know what the orgs intentions are.

I will preface it by saying I really liked how Cole played as a center on the Moose last year. He drove play and was conscientious in his end. He started this year at center as well and I thought he looked really good as well. However something seemed to change plan wise with him after game 3 or 4 when he was moved to LW and predominantly played that position on the Moose while double shifting as the 4C until the WJHC. My guess is Dubois's elite play and maybe Perfetti's near readiness accelerated the plan to get him into the lineup so they switched to getting him ready to play at wing in the NHL. Given what we've seen since the WJHC there seems to be a plan to get him seasoned in the NHL this year.

If we are talking in three years I'd hazard Dubois who will be in the heart of his prime will be the defects number 1 matchup center. I think Cole could definitely be a good 1b by then depending on how the org wants to play it. Imo he plays like a center through the nz and in the ozone. I have liked his defensive foundation and expect he will be able to handle that aspect of it in time as well.

the pts will start coming in for perfetti. i think he's been average defensively, which is fine for a winger (esp a v young winger). not a liability, not the 2nd coming of stone or marchand which is fine. the line w/ PLD+KC is generating shot-attempts and quality chances at a v good rate....sh% is like 3%. a line with KC and PLD at 3% is uniquely low, and i don't think it is low b/c of perfettis inclusion.... good goaltending, unlucky bounces etc. the goals/pts will start coming their way.
