Quoting this in the correct player thread.
I think there are 2 positives to his going.
Firstly, I know that it must be a very big deal for players to go. If they're in the NHL, that's one thing, but I don't think his development is impeded by skipping a few AHL games to play in the World Juniors. Especially one at home, with fans actually in attendance. It's an experience that many don't get to have.
Secondly, he's going to be a leader on the team and I think that experience is also valuable.
So, he probably won't learn anything on the ice specifically but I think it's an overall positive. My original comment about WJC success not translating to the NHL was more about how the team was chosen this year, and that just because someone had a good or bad tournament, it doesn't really say a lot about their professional future.
Well I think he really wants to go so you let him since he's not in the NHL. But I think other then the experience of it he gets to be a leader of a pro team here so I don't see much added benefit of him being a returning player.
But I agree that what he does in this tournament won't have any bearing on his pro career.
