Player Discussion Cole Caufield - Part 13

I see a lot of people talking contract on the last couple pages. Two thoughts I don’t think we see him sign this summer and I’m not worried about value.

1) MSL is saying he has objectives to have caufield grow more next year as a player. Rewarding him with a big contract before he grows rewards him for the player he is now and not the one we need him to become.

2). The org has effectively got the high water mark set with Suzuki. So I wouldn’t expect caufield to get anymore then him.

My 2 cents

If Caufield puts up 40 plus goals next year, I think we might pay more than we did for Suzuki.

Jack Hughes is already a superstar, Zegras is looking like one too, Seider is a monster #1 D already, Boldy is a near PPG power forward. Hard to beat that group.
Compare points vs games played. Not far off with Hughes and Caufield has more goals. And that’s despite playing under stupid coaches.

I think you’re going to be surprised. He absolutely does have a legit shot at being that draft’s best player.

What is fascinating to me is that he doesn’t get rocked that much for a smurf! And he started to go to the dirty areas.

Caufield didn't play when he was 18 and stop pretending that Hughes has played for HOF caliber coaches.

Forward maybe but Seider is something else

The thing is even if Caufield can become a Gaudreau/St Louis type small guy who puts up big numbers, Hughes and Zegras have that potential as centerman. Seider is looking like a future Norris winner.

Caufield is definitely in the conversation for Top-5 in a redraft, but it’s still real early.

I’m not declaring that he’ll be the best player in that draft. I mean, there’s no way to know that right now. But he has a legit chance to be don’t you think?

He’s pacing for 46 goals under MSL in his rookie year. Is it really that hard to believe that he’d be a 50+ goal guy in the future? This guy broke Matthews and Kane’s records.

I haven’t said this about too many of our players over the years but this guy has legit superstar potential. I think he’s the real deal.

The potential is there, and I do agree with you that he’s the real deal. I think he flirts with 40 goals & 70ish points next season.

I think he has a better chance of hitting 50 than under 40. I intrepidly predict a 46 goal season. :) 70 points sounds about right.
Man 50 is so hard to hope for, I literally haven’t seen it from a Habs player in my lifetime. Richer did it, but I was just a toddler at the time so I didn’t get to actually see it. It doesn’t even seem real that a player on our roster has the ability to score that many, but I do think Caufield has the potential to do it.. if not next season, in the future.

I think it will be forty-something next year. But I predict some 50 goal seasons in him.

It’s hard for us to believe that we could have a superstar. We’ve been starved for them so long. Price and Subban are the only ones since Roy.

Suzuki’s not going to be a superstar but I think Caufield is.

Even 40 is tough for a Habs player. The last time a Habs player reached 40 was 28 years ago in the 93-94 season when Damphousse did it.

Insane that it’s taken so long. Max would’ve hit 40 if he’d had a decent coach and played a full season with Chuck.

Not having a 40 goal scorer in 30 years is downright embarrassing.

Since Doucharme got sacked,Caufield has been as good as or better than any of those guys. I would like to give him a fresh start next season with a coach like MSL that utilies him to his potential and gives him lots of ice time.I still think he can be one of the top guys from that draft class soon enough. This has been a horrendous season and he's still holding his own

I don't think it's crazy if our pp gets fixed. He's a sniper with a great release. I don't know how anybody can watch his game, see the type of goals he scores, and think it's not possible for him to get 40. I wouldn't bet against him getting 40, 50 is pretty hard to do, but it's possible if we get better as a team.
