He's currently trying to find a way to contribute even if he's in a goal scoring slump. But, this doesn't change the fact I also predict him to be a 40+ goalscorer and will reach 50 for sure.
He has 6 goals in his last 12 games which is a pretty normal pace for him. His start of the season hurt his goals total right now but he still can finish with around 30.

No goals in his last four though and he’s missing the net in shots that should go in.

I know, four games is nothing but it’s discouraging after he seemed to have regained his scoring touch. I was hoping for a strong finish. Hopefully he can pick it up again.

The difference in 22-23 was that Matthews was recovering from a surgery.

Well, I guess we could argue the same thing for Caufield this year. I don't know...

This year wasn't a total waste though. He continues to improve overall and it really was a good season if you look at his underlying play. The goals aren't there but at least you can salvage it from a development standpoint. I still have huge faith in this guy. I think he's good for 40 next year and will have a 50 goal season in him someday.

Funny, I used to think he was going to emerge as our best forward but now I look at Slaf and I'm not so sure. I put a huge value on goals but Slaf has just gone next level and is only 19. It's unreal how good he's been lately. He's starting to shoot more, controls the play. He's a monster out there.

I think my biggest takeaway is that the Suzuki-Caufield chemistry has been overstated but the Suzuki-Slaf chemistry looks legitimate.

I've always wanted Dach with Caufield, so this could be a biased view, but I think Dach's size down the middle, puck possession style and superior vision/passing skills and passing slant.. that he'd be better for Caufield than Suzuki.

I felt the same way. Interestingly enough, Slaf was amazing with Dach too. It’d be great to out all three together but that would put the lines out of balance.

Dropped him from my pool riiiiiiiiiight before his streak.

You can all thank me.
Yeeesh, sorry bud. He’s killing it for me. League counts shots too.

Those goals come at a good time. First time scoring in six games. Gives him 11 goals in his last 20. His first multi goal game of the year comes after Valentine’s Day. If you’d told me that at the start of the year I wouldn’t have believed you.

11 in 20 and it’s a 13.75 shooting percentage over that period. Encouraging to see him get two tonight.

Keep going Cole!! Not 40 goal season like we expected, but he play really really good. More complete player, more dynamic. The goals will come in his career, I have 0 doubt about that.

I hope he starts shooting the puck like the last two seasons at some point.

I don't like this ultra-perimetre version that we're getting.

it seems like NHL teams take an entire year to adapt to prominent threats.

last season, Cole was still an unknown, so they gave him more space to get his shot off.

this year, teams are playing him more closely, but in exchange this is freeing up space for Suzuki and now Slaf 😈

is that a bad thing?

And good players adapt.

He will need to start being as much of a threat as he was before his contract, because that is why he gets paid for.

I'd like the size spread out on both lines, so I'm with you. Slaf with Suzuki, Cole with dach.

You can load up on the size in specific situations, but I prefer the balanced approach.

Maybe I’m wrong but I feel like size isn’t a thing anymore as long as you’re good along the boards. Little guys can screen easier these days too because of how tight cross checking is called. Having someone on each line who can take the body if probably preferred though

His last 2 games he has 6 shots on net, one before that he had 8 and i don’t think he has a game with less than 4 shots in 2 months.

He has 8 goals in his last 14 games and 11 his last 21 games. It’s pretty much his normal pace, like last year, since mid-december. And he make way more plays for his teammates than he was last year so he doesn’t just get the goals anymore.

I don't like this ultra-perimetre version that we're getting.

Caufield shoots from in close more than most forwards in the NHL, even other goal scorers and less from the perimeter than most forwards. I don't know how someone can watch him play and think he's "ultra-perimetre".

And good players adapt.

He will need to start being as much of a threat as he was before his contract, because that is why he gets paid for.

At 5v5, among regulars, he's:

-18th in s/60
-13th in shot attempts per 60
-13th in unblocked shot attempts per 60
-40th in scoring chances per 60
-9th worst in goals above expected (i.e. you'd expect him to have 6 more goals).

Generally speaking, the only difference between this season and last is that he's getting fewer really high danger shots off and his shot just isn't going in. Which happens to even truly elite players. He has been as much of a threat as before, which is why he's been able to evolve as a playmaker and defensively. His playmaking and defensive play has improved dramatically. As long as teams are respecting his shot, Suzuki and Slaf will get more dangerous looks and Caufield will help get the puck to him.

Unless the way goal scoring trends has changed dramatically this offseason, I don't see any reason to be concerned about Caufield's goal scoring at all. He's just as much of a threat as he's always been. Teams are recognizing it more and Suzuki and Slaf (and Caufield) are making them pay for giving Caufield that respect.

12 without a goal.

And this comes after a nice streak where it looked like he might be able to slavage his season. A shooting percentage of 7.5… I’d have never believed it. That is just atrocious. The guy should have DOUBLE the goals he has now.

50 goal scorer...
I just don't see where all these goals are going to come from?
It looks like Suzuki will be a constant around 30 goals Slaf's totals 20-25 Dach 20-25 with his revamped release Newhook 20 and Roy ???
Will we create enough scoring collectively for Caufield to hit 50. That's hard to see at this point.
Adding Dach to PP1 isn't going to bump us to 25% plus I don't think.
