For some reason. I feel like Bear is like me when I go to catch a pop fly... Anytime he has to think he does it too much and botches where as I can snare liners with the best of them.. (No not really but I am pretty solid fielding them or was when younger)
If he's just reacting he does pretty good when he thinks he does it wrong :P

Well, if true, here is a picture of Bear on the bench between shifts:

I agree, there were flashes where he looked like a fairly cerebral player who was playing with some swagger, feeling good. But I feel like his confidence is totally shot right now. Being pulled in and out of the lineup has him screwed up maybe? Maybe he's just not a good fit in the Canes system? Reminds me of Forsling and it wouldn't surprise me to see him find second pairing success elsewhere, also wouldn't surprise me for him to be a career #7.

Bear has talked about this being the only place he's ever played where he's not only been allowed to, but encouraged to throw pucks at the net and engage more offensively. Some players seem to struggle to find the right balance, he seems to be one of those players.

Outside of the issues with Bear, the 3rd pairing is an absolute mess, Smiths toughness is a nice addition but he's pretty bad at the whole playing defense part of being a defenseman. Cole is a penalty machine. And neither Cole or Smith have the foot speed to play with the pace of the top teams in the modern NHL.
