Two more years than ideal imo. It could pay off, or it could be a disaster. Such is the world of paying for marginal starting goaltending.

Good grief, this is embarrassing.

What was Blackwood's camp at, 5.5-6 mil per? Gross.

This will definitely hurt the Oilers negotiations with Skinner.

So his season in San Jose just doesn't count? Or all of last year?

 Please continue to post, I enjoy a good laugh.
Oh yeah - I forgot all the pierce hawthorn posts praising Mac black the past few years.

Lol.

This is the best way to come back from a Christmas break with a bang.

Avs doing an epic panic signing, given there wa no reason not to wait for more than 4 games.

Add in Avs fans LOVING this signing and getting super defensive about it - it’s like they have Stockholm syndrome with bad goaltending. Only a few were Finnish though I think.

Anyways - it’s good to have hockey back. This thread makes it even better. lol.

I'm actually shocked at Avs fans cope with this contract, this guy has played over 200 games and been borderline out of the league with inconsistent play, has 4 good games and is given an insane deal. Avs have been continuously let down by poor goaltending decisions and their fans are defending this objectively horrendous deal. This is a 50% overpay at minimum. Adin Hill got less after winning a Cup lmfao. Citing the fact that Jarry or Kuemper (who are also signed to abysmal contracts) are paid similarly is not a defense lol.

3-1 and 0.931 since he got to Colorado. Lots of coping in here since the Avs just solved the biggest hole on their roster.
Glad you think 4 games = "solved"

I think Blackwood is a fine league average goalie, but "solved" is some overreacting. But I guess it's an understandable pivot considering his predecessor was Fourgiev, so anything better than that is at a "solved" level. The sumo goalie from the Sports Science video would be better than Fourgiev.

Market is shifting/has shifted, anyone who got their goalies done last summer or the year before are going to look like discounts

I don't really understand why Avs would feel pressed to get this done so soon

Is it a massive risk? Yes. Is it potentially a massive reward? Yes. Would there be a lot of better options available for cheaper in the free agency to solve the goaltending position (or trade market)? Unlikely.

How many actually good goalies are there in this league - and then how many of those ones are you willing to give the bag to?

This isn't an Avs problem. It's the problem with literally every goalie contract extension made in the past few years. Some go south quickly. Some are pretty good. It's a risk but unless you've got one of the half-dozen actually good goalies + goalie contracts on your hands, what are you supposed to do? Switch goalies every 12 months and have zero stability or direction?

It's easy to say, "I wouldn't have invested money in goalie A, B or C". It's a lot harder to actually say what your better solution would be.

I don't disagree with you. The Avs are talented enough that a solid yet not spectacular goalie is probably good enough. I'm a lot more scared by big ticket goalie contracts than mid tier ones in general.

5 years tho... That seems to be jumping the gun a bit.

It's almost like he's played like 200 NHL games mostly on bad teams. Good thing we have people paid to watch games that are called scouts.
I have never watched his 200 games played. I will start after I finish my work for the day.

Colorado was a team i thought could possibly win multiple cups but I'm starting to think this core just wins the one. Which is still great, but I expected more.

Of course there's a chance this works out and he ends up as a really solid, stable goalie for them the next 5 years. Just seems like an unnecessary risk that could end up being an anchor.

This is minimum wage for a veteran 40-50 game goalie.

People need to adjust expectations with the rising salary cap.

If you want a reality check, go back and read the Daccord thread to see how many posters are completely out of touch with where the market is for goalies. Daccord had 68 career games, and he got a similar contract to buy up UFA years.

It's just the reality right now that unless a team develops RFA goalies and can get them cheap throughout their RFA years, the cost of a UFA who even has proven they can play 40-50 games and projects to a .900+ starting goalie is now going to be 5M with term. Any goalie who is actually a star is getting 7M-8M+. 5M with term is low end starting goalie money.

Every non Avs fan right now :D

I was thinking maybe they should sign him before the price goes up, but I didn't see the price going up more than that, so it seem like a big rush, especially for 5 years.

I don't think those contracts are being used as a defense necessarily just a response to people saying he wouldn't fetch that value on the market despite the precedent being there.

He'll be the 17th highest paid goalie in the league and commanding around 5.5% of the team salary once the cap goes up. It's pretty reasonable. He only has to provide >.905 goaltending for the Avs to win some games. I think he has that in him and clearly so does management.
