I think it says more about keeping the cap hit lower than anything about Necas.

I'm also curious if there's any trade protection.

The term is the best part quite frankly.

Three years is all this group has left(And even that is being optimistic) as a "contender". This deal likely means they won't re-sign him afterwards as well.

But the aav should have been closer to $5M for a 3 year deal.

Colorado gets him at a very good number for three years. But the number that matters most to Mittelstadt is that 3. 3 years to put up points as part of a loaded high scoring team…then hit ufa at 28 in a rising cap world.

Amazing deal for the Avs, I'd be super happy to have Casey on that deal as a 2C for Buffalo (well 1C in our case...).
Depending on the outlook of the team year three he might extend on a team friendly deal. Casey will probably value playing for a good team after experiencing the Pegula freakshow.

He's improved from year to year and is definately the next guy in line to lift the cup after ROR, Eichel and Reinhart.
