Everyone is making Mikko’s agent out to be the bad guy. I'm fairly certain Mikko was kept well apprised of the potential outcomes and had approved the negotiating strategy. I’m also confident that the agent had fully apprised Mikko of the potential for being traded. It was a miscalculation on Mikko and his agent’s part. Anyway, that’s business.
Mikko still had to rely on his agent's guidance and expertise in negotiations though. That's what he's paying them for. He's a hockey player, he doesn't have expertise in this area.
For instance, how much hardball to play with the Avs, and what number should they ask for ($13M+) and how long should they stick to that number? This played a huge role in this process.
Another example is his agent reportedly believing that the Avs asking Mikko which teams he may sign with was a pressure tactic. Which Freidman says is common.
I think the Leafs might have actually tried to do this with Marner.
The Leafs went to Marner to see if he'd waive his NMC, so the next step presumably would be asking him if he'd consider signing with Carolina if he was traded there.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I really doubt Toronto would trade Marner for Mikko, even if he did waive. The city would go nuts and it would be a huge distraction. I think that was the exact same pressure tactic to get him to sign.
Mikko wanted to stay in Colorado, so he's relying on his agent to determine whether this was a bluff/pressure tactic, or legit, and he got that part wrong.
It wasn't a pressure tactic this time, they were being serious, and getting that wrong may have seriously impacted what he and Mikko did in negotiations, and whether he stayed in Colorado or was traded.
