Friedman said $11.75M was on the table, Mikko and his agent shot it down and wanted closer to Draisaitl money.

The Avalanche then let Carolina call Mikko's reps to help facilitate a deal. They didn't want Mikko taking his leverage past the trade deadline.

I had been saying this for a while as well. I don't think the Avs were ever serious about re-signing Mikko, and I agree, this reinforces that theory. They were mostly going through the motions for PR.

It's the one thing that makes this 'makes no sense' situation make sense.

I think they had planned in the offseason that they could only sign for what would be a low ball offer in this market with all the cap raises coming up. If he didn't take it they'd move him mid season and they didn't really think he would take it.

We heard earlier that the Avs and Carolina had been talking about a Mikko trade earlier in the year, perhaps in the off season, can't remember.

If this is true that the Avs offered $11.6M, then Mikko dropped all the way to $12M, and they moved him the next day, then I'm not sure they even wanted the $11.6M number. Maybe Mikko dropping so much scared them and they were like we gotta move him asap, not at the deadline, because he may drop further and then we won't know what to do. We'll look like assholes to our fans who want to keep him.

I know the narrative has basically set in that Mikko is the asshole, and that's very hard to change when minds get made up that way here, but I really feel bad for Mikko outside the financial aspect of all this.

He was willing to take a lot less than Nate to stay. MacK's 15.09% of the cap would be $14,410,950 under next year's cap. So Mikko was willing to stay for about $2.4M less than Nate in same market as a multi 100+ point guy.

He gets traded immediately after caving, then goes to Carolina where he doesn't produce like normal in 13 games playing a totally different style. Then Avs fans start thinking he's an asshole. NHL fans and the media start shitting on him.

Then Carolina decides to trade him again. Then Canes fans start thinking he's an asshole. Sounds like he came to a deal with Edmonton but the Canes didn't like their offer. Doesn't come to a deal immediately with the Stars, who were reportedly very close to walking away, and leaving Mikko in Carolina where he's probably miserable.

Then at one point he reportedly just goes f*** it, lets just get this shit over with, and signs for $12M again. Now he's the asshole again to Avs fans, and that 1st round series is probably either gonna end with the Stars beating the Avs (which means Mikko probably played well and he's the villain) or the Avs beat the Stars (which means Mikko might not play well and will get shit on for being overrated again).

What a crazy chain of events, and butterfly effects, likely stemming from CMac and the Avs decision to reshape the team mid season. Early results say the team is better, but man Joe and CMac have shown often they're cold customers when it comes to the business side.

If he had kept himself at a higher level and not let himself get comfortable being a high end support player this wouldn't of happened.

So from start to finish it's on him. They did both have conversations about seeing him drive the second line, and attempt it to no avail.

You can call out Mitts, but why was Nuke able to do it immediately coming off injury?

The 2nd most valuable winger on the team doesn't get 12M. Not yet anyway.

If true then why not take another 2-3 weeks to negotiate him down to their price. No, I believe the top they were willing to keep at was 11M tops. They offered 11.6M to look good and knowing he wouldn't accept it.

Hard to know anything for sure, but 11M was my cap. With all of the projections for the roster that was the number that you could seemingly fit him in and keep all of the important top end roster spots (assuming Mitts worked).

Granted that was also before these crazy cap raises were agreed on by the NHL & NHLPA.

Leafs to Marner: " Don't worry Mitch, go ahead and waive your NMC. We want to re-sign you anyway."
Sure Leafs. I believe you don't want to trade him.

OR

Mikko to Drai: "Hey Drai, move over. I shoot from that spot now. Go find your own spot."
Mikko is such a bad fit for Edmonton.
Leafs where trying to get Marner to sign

Agent trying to calm down the waters a bit here, saying Rantanen did give Carolina some legit thought. But also saying that it was Carolina who made the deal without having discussed it with Rantanen first.

So from Tulsky: They did get to talk to Rantanen. Were told that they're only focusing on extension with Colorado. They took a risk trading for him. Mikko took time to think after getting traded. Week before tdl he said he won't extend with Carolina and gave them a list of 4 teams. Calls out Rod for speaking hyperbolically.

Lol the agent sucks. Mikko had to tardwrangle him to actually go do his job. And he still didn't get it done.

Rantanen's agent said the first offer they got was in the fall. And that then things went slowly until 6-7 weeks from the deadline when there were rumours about a few teams circling, and at that point Rantanen wanted to approach the Avs management to let them know that he was flexible... and then shortly thereafter he was traded.

The agent sounds like he's choosing his words carefully, being vague a lot of the time.

Yes and no. I do think that the agent played this poorly, if Mikko really wanted to stay in Colorado. Which I do believe he did. On the other hand, this whole saga ended pretty well for Mikko and his agent. They got more money than was at the table here, Mikko goes to a competitive team that has plenty of Finns (and he's probably closer friends with Hintz than Aho), and Dallas probably suits his signifficant other well too. It sucks for us that he ends up in the division, but Necas has looked great so far. Arguably better than Mikko.

I hope he gets a really big standing ovation on Sunday, for all he did for this team, including winning the cup in 2022. And then, he deserves the same treatment as the rest of the Stars players.

It reads as them wanting 14+ and hoping the Avs would budge, but then realizing too late that the Avs weren't f***ing around.

I can't blame Mikko for picking Dallas. He has lots of friends there and the team is a contender so it makes a lot of sense. We knew there was a strong possibility of that happening and here we are. So be it. Let's take them on right in the 1st round.

With that said.......Man I hate these playoffs format. There are always a few very good teams getting eliminated that should go at least one more round. Dalls and Colorado is the perfect example. Now that the TDL is over and we know the final roster this matchup should be the WCF.

I previously said that the agent did his job, but I take it back. Mikko did exactly what he should, told the agent he wants to stay and to get it done already.

So Tulsky himself talks about how it went down.

At the 1:00 Hour mark....

That was amazing. Great interview by Marek. Thoughtful questions that nursed the interview along. Glad Tulsky is facing the firing squad. Respect that.

Mikko’s agent being interested in negotiating with Colorado aligns with the commentary that they thought it was tactic. But his agent had the opportunity to clarify the four teams...the four teams that materialized (according to Tulsky) a week before the TDL. He kind of outs Rantanen’s agent a little bit. Or at least he makes his agent scapegoating Colorado mgt less plausible.
