It always makes me laugh when people in the media are shocked the Avs didn't want to give Rantanen 12M long term. The Avs never should have gone above 10M long term, but they were willing to go to 11.5/11.6M and obviously Mikko thought they were lowballing him even at that astronomical amount.

These people just look at the point totals and they aren't watching the guy play the last two seasons. He's not the same Moose we grew accustomed to watching.

I don't think there's a chance he lives up to that contract in Dallas sans MacKinnon. He'll produce for a few years, for sure, but not to the caliber they're expecting.

It is weird how you see Necas flying around all game creating things but end up with no point on the night then there's Rantanen doing **** all all night and somehow end up with 3 points.

Mikko f***ed him over big time. At least if the reports are true. They were allowed to talk to him and he showed interest. Then when they trade for him, he immediately says he's not going to sign.
Yeah, that's interesting. I wonder now if Mikko even bothered playing hard for them or Rod even bothered building his scheme around him. Either way, this was a marriage doomed from the start.

Friedman has said on multiple 32T pods that Rantanen thought letting Carolina talk to his camp was just a negotiation tactic and he was dumbfounded when the trade went though, he didn't think they were actually serious. If that's true then Mikko deserves some shit for that.

Again, I won't really hold any ill will toward him, despite the fact that he didn't handle this situation well. In the end the Avs got what they needed. Sucks that he's back in the goddamned division but that just seems preordained for some of these star Avs players.

They were willing to offer that but I am convinced they were not willing to pay above 11M. They knew he was going to counter over 12M and use that as their excuse to trade him. The Avs only wanted to show they were willing to sign him and they played the game perfectly. They wanted the cap space.

I mean, in 15 games since arriving Necas has points in 9 of them. That's pretty darn good.

Mikko has elite talent. It doesn't take much for him to score. I just don't know if he'll be able to replicate his Avalanche production without Nathan MacKinnon on his line. I like Roope Hintz, but that is a massive drop off in talent from MacKinnon.

He'll keep scoring PP goals and empty netters.

His 5v5 production though...it's going to be interesting to keep an eye on that.

I have no hate for Mikko, mostly because I wanted him traded for a year now and him holding out was probably the only thing that forced cMac into not giving him stupid money.

I'm just a huge believer that no team should be paying wingers more than 10 mil AAV. Success in hockey comes from center depth, defense, and at least competent goaltending. Wingers are an accessory. Let Dallas make that mistake.

Now, I wish cMac had traded him a year ago - with term left on his contract - for a long term solution at 2C. But here we are. I have to give cMac credit that he nailed the Rantanen trade given the corner he painted himself into. Necas is a perfect replacement at a dollar amount that makes since, Drury is a nice add, and the picks helped them load up at the deadline.

The Avs are screwed capwise beyond this season, but they put their best foot forward to compete for a cup this year.
Have you spent any time looking at the roster and cap projections for the next couple of seasons before making that statement in bold?

There's absolutely nothing to suggest that the Avs are "screwed" by the cap. In fact Id say that the cap situation is really good now that you have Necas's $6.5m until 2026 instead of Rantanen's $12m kicking in this summer.

MacFarland... Look Moose, I love ya but the Avalanche can not under any circumstances go above 11.5M. Mikko.... Yeah, that 14M might have been a stretch... but if you could just get that to 12M....

Ya i'm also curious to see how Rants performs moving forward.

He has to know all the rumors and why the Avs traded him, but I honestly don't know if that means he'll start giving a shit again to prove the Avs brass wrong or just be happy with his money and continue to coast and put up points.

How much will Rantanen get boo'd in Carolina?

I thought Edmonton might be circling around Mikko, makes a lot of sense.

Looks like their pursuit of him left them empty handed though.
Now way Edmonton had the pieces to get it done. It's all wishful thinking for them because the pieces to get it done (Broberg/Holloway) signed offer sheets.

Necas.. I was thinking ten point five million.

Cmac.. I do not

Necas.. OK 9.5M

Cmac.. I do not mind that number at all. Great deal kid. Way to be part of the family. I'm assuming 8 years?

Necas.. I get to play with Nathan MacKinnon for the next 8 years woohoo!

What I love so much about Necas is how different the Avs look because of him.

When we've been talking about the Avs getting stale, and then you swap out Mikko for Necas and see how completely different they are playing the game of hockey... you have to have fresh blood and talent. It's can't just be bringing in a great bottom sixer or 4/5 dman. You need freshness at the top as well.

I don't blame these outsiders for not knowing how bad Rantanen can be as a hockey player as they mostly only watch the scoresheet.

I love CMac more and more. I bet he wanted Rants to say no to 11.6M.

I agree. Cmac likes to make moves and now he was able to make those without Mikko. Having flexibility makes things way more interesting. Of course, this approach is more risky for him but I don't think anybody saw too much success with our previous method.. the team was way too top heavy and always ran out of gas in playoffs. It's just not the winning method.

I watched the Edmonton game. He trying harder than I've seen in a very long time. We'll see if it continues, but signing with Dallas is a total revenge move. He'll be wanting to stick it to us.

Necas needs to practice his shooting and he will bang 40 goals a season no problem. Insane hockey player already. He would literally be MacK lite if he could score more
Insane talent.

As long as he keeps practicing with MacK and Drouin I think he will come good.

It's hilarious to me that they felt he disappeared on occasion.

Even in his off games he's way more noticeable breaking the puck in consistently.

The work rate difference between the two is fkn night and day.

Have you ever been to a dog musher's camp?

The good dogs get excited around a good team. They know they are going to run and make some noise. Mikko was like have a clydesdale strung up amongst a bunch of huskies.

MacKinnon almost feels a little liberated. I think he's even said Necas plays the game so much like I do, I let him and find myself controling more in other areas now or something similar. The major point being, we're not just a good fit for Necas, he's a good fit for us. Nate seems to be having a ball playing with him.
