Maybe they weren't on the same page, but his agent read him wrong, and the team wrong.

Which is completely on him. He's literally there to bridge the gap.

Mikko should fire this guy for playing a game of chicken with his life.

I find it interesting that he's not committing to Carolina. Could it be maximizing his salary by going to UFA? Yes. Could it also be that he's still processing the shock of being traded? Yes. Could it also be how can he commit to Carolina if he's no longer sure about his agent? Yes.

Agents worry about their reputations and egos. And it seems like that probably got in the way here. As you alluded to, his main job is to represent the wants and wishes of his client. It seems like he put himself first here.

But doesnt it also say something about most NHL gms? He was so confident in this tactic. The problem is the "**** around and find out" part of it came at Mikko's expense. And its not like there's any elegance here. Its not exactly a demonstration of skill to simply wait things out. Mikko could have paid someone trying to pass a bar exam to do this.

I agree that Mikko listened to this guy based on the premise that he does this for a living while Mikko is a hockey player. Mikko has every right to fire this guy if he feels he can no longer trust him.

I don't think Mikko fits the criteria for bad or extremely bad. He's actually been pretty consistently great. Pretty close to the same numbers each year. You can't leach your way off MacKinnon to these kinds of numbers.

2020-21: 47 goals - 105 point pace
2021-22: 36 goals - 92 points (39 goal 101 pt pace)
2022-23: 55 goals - 105 points
2023-24: 42 goals - 104 points
2024-25: 42 goals - 107 point pace with Avs

Did you watch him play or only looked at the numbers? There's a reason why ALL the GDTs were littered with how bad he is and it's not because no one knows hockey in those threads.

You know I watched him play.

Commentary in GDT's is not proof of a players value. It's emotionally driven hot takes.

If we went by GDT's to define Kadri, we should have traded him, because we could never win a Cup with him on the team.

If we went by GDT's to define Kiviranta, he's a scrub that shouldn't even be playin in the NHL.

If we went by GDT's to define Bednar, he should have been fired a long time ago, because we can't win a Cup with him behind the bench.

If we went by GDT"s to define Malinski last year, he also would be a scrub that shouldn't be playing in the NHL.

If we went by the trade thread or early season GDT's to define Mitts, he'd be exactly the 2C this team needs, and a great stylistic fit.

That's because he was good then and not shit (unlike now). Believe it or not we can see (and judge) when players are playing good hockey. Rantanen has been shit for 2 years despite the great stats, that's a fact for anyone who watched him play on a nightly basis.

No one here wanted to hate Rantanen, every single fan here wanted him to be good and had a positive bias if anything. He just sucked.

Mitts was playing well based on his production or how he was playing? Because he's playing the exact same way, trying to make the exact same plays, he just isn't producing the way he was in a very small sample size early on.

This isn't hindsight either. We could go back to before the trade last year, and I had posts saying this is who Casey is.

Let's explore this further with Mikko though, because I really strongly disagree, and think he's been unfairly piled on.

How can a player leach their way off MacKinnon consistently for five years to 40+ goal and 100+ point production every season?

How can they leach their way off MacKinnon to 55 goals?

Why can't anyone else on the team come anywhere close to doing that?
 
Mikko obviously didn't suck but he wasn't anything close to the caliber of player we had come to expect. The analytics supported this, too -- whenever he was away from MacKinnon, he struggled but if MacKinnon was away from him, nothing changed for 29.

If Mikko was willing to be reasonable I'm sure fans would have been with an 8x10 contract. Hell, some fans said they felt comfortable going to 8x11.5. Problem is if we were going to get the coasting, weak, let MacKinnon do all the work for me player then he deserved to be sent on his way.

Suck is an overstatement but he was not deserving of anything close to what the Avs were offering contract wise.

I'm not going to say Mikko sucks. One doesn't score 90-100+ points in the NHL and suck. However, his effort over the past couple of years has tailed off, and I think it is true he was leaching off Mack and Makar. Is that now who he is, or can he turn it around? Only time will tell. One thing clear to me, however, is that the trade totally caught him off-guard, and he's fighting it both on and off the ice. I don't think Carolina is a good fit for him stylistically either. He needs to decide if he wants the $100M+ Carolina offered him to stay, and adjust his game, or probably take less than he wants to go somewhere, where his game might be a better fit.

Do you have a site that gives WOWY stats for production? Obviously his corsi and extepcted goals would go down playing away from Nate, but I can't find what his actual production was.

I seem to remember a few years back, where Mikko had pretty good numbers with Nate out of the lineup. I remember Nate giving him props too, because he had been hurt more than usual, and helped carry the team while he was out.

I'm also curious what Nate's production was like away from Mikko?
