Confirmed with Link: [COL, CAR, CHI] Rantanen-Hall to CAR, Necas-Drury-25 2nd-26 4th to COL, Chi 25 3rd to Chi (Ret 50% on Mikko)

Rumours out of CAR is that they are looking to trade Mikko if they can't sign him soon.
I wish I could both Love and Laugh at this post. We need the ability to show more than one emotion.

I also wish I wasn't wanting to see Mikko fail, but I've found myself wanting that a lot lately. I should be a better person. I want to be a better person. But I really want to see him signing for something much closer to 10M than 13M.

For whatever differences of opinion people have on Mikko, he's always seemed like a really good dude. I don't think there's too much difference of opinion on that.

I hope things don't go so poorly he turns into a punching bag around the league. I hope he finds a good fit somewhere and this becomes a win/win for everyone.

Good fit in the East hopefully

If Carolina has to trade Rantanen at the TDL their entire management should be fired.

You don't trade Necas, Drury, and two draft picks for a pending UFA without both knowing AND being comfortable with paying him to stay.
Well, that's where Cmac cooked them. He gave no rights to talk to Mikko beforehand.

Huge risk by Carolina. Looks like it backfired.

Yikes.

I mean good luck getting anywhere close to Necas plus plus.

They should have known that was a big risk. Not just UFA, but a skill player going to a very different playing style mid season isn't a sure thing to work. That's going to affect his desire to stay too.

CMac took a big risk too, but he took the smarter side of it, knowing Necas was under contract, and that he would fit the Avs style better than Carolina, while Mikko is a pending UFA that fits the Canes style worse.

We'll see how they handle the PR if they move Mikko, but I'm starting to see signs that they like to throw players under the bus for their own gambles not paying off.

Seems like they did that a bit with Guentzal, leaking before UFA that they agreed to an 8x8 deal he asked them about, and they're already leaking that they offered Mikko a big contract.

I agree.

That being said, if they trade him at the deadline, I'm going to have massive respect for them acknowleding a mistake and moving promptly to correct it.

How long did it take us to get rid of Georgiev? Or give up on the hopes of Jost being our 2C? Or Newhook?

Mistakes happen in the NHL all the time. Good GM's limit the ones they make and then move quickly to rectify the ones they do. If Wadell damnit, Tlusty f*** me! Tulsky.... If Eric Tulsky were to move on from Rants by the deadline, I would actually consider that a +1 on his record.

My issue with this is that they gave up too much for a pure rental in that case. I would understand if they manage to extend him and he continues his lackluster results leading to them trading him while under contract. At least in the latter scenario, they can likely get some value back for him.

As it stands, if they trade rental Rants for scraps then it will always be remembered that the trade was Necas-Drury-picks for scraps. That sucks and pisses me off for Canes fans.

That said, I do want the Moose to find success. I'll always have a soft spot for that lumbering uncoordinated empty net sniper.

What will they have to show for Necas, Drury, and two draft picks? Two months worth of Rantanen and a futures package in a year they're supposed to compete for a cup?

That's a fireable offense.

Absolutely understand what you are saying.

But to basically admit a mistake early and take action to correct it is what everyone would like their management team to do... well, we'd all like them not to make a mistake in the first place but you get my drift right?

Yes it sucks they made the move. Unless you were here on this board you probably didn't see a whole lot of criticism for Mikko's game. The few of us that dinged actually got shat on for awhile. But if they are able to change course (if that is their plan...I still don't believe they are looking to move Rants) this quickly that would be something.
Imagine the video when Landy returns.
If it doesn't f***ing rock, we riot. Those mother f***ers have had two years to work on it.

Mikko and perhaps especially his agent miscalculated big time.

They thought CMac would not trade him mid-season- dumb.

They thought he would be a productive player away from two generational talents in MacK and All Hail Cale- dumb.

They based his value on his numbers, and not his overall on-ice performance- dumb.

Yes, I've advocated for trading him because I did not feel he was worth the bank he was asking for. It's hard to see my feelings confirmed because he was our Moose, but reality is a harsh mistress.

He might still be playing hardball, this time with Carolina. They have less leverage than what we had.

Carolina is just leaking info so Mikko takes the deal offered to him.
Given that he just got dealt here because of similar circumstances I'll bet he accepts their offer.
If Carolina wasn't prepared to offer him somewhere between $12.5-13 x 8 years then they were absolute fools to make this trade.
