I think he lost his confidence after the hot start. It resulted in him playing fewer minutes, being taken off the top PP unit, and playing with less talented linemates. Created a feedback loop of negativity. This was further exacerbated by injuries to Nuke, who can carry the 2nd line, and for a while also Drouin who is one of our only other top-6 level guys. So inconsistency in linemates as well. Probably also just some bad puck luck.

He likes to scan a lot sometimes and needs to just move his feet more, get himself into better position to work with teammates. His brain can handle playing fast, but sometimes he just tries to play slow and the game gets past him.

The thing is that in Buffalo he was also playing with less talented linemates due to the organizational priority to give Thompson and Cozens more time, and he found a way to produce with them. Jordan Greenway was his most common linemate during his final year in Buffalo for christsake

I was saying less talented than Nuke, Drouin, Lehkonen. Big drop off to Kiviranta, Parssinen, Colton, etc.

I'm hoping we get him at like 10M per for 8 years. At the end of the day, I doubt he gets much more than 11M AAV because I think we will have an offer ready for him to sign right after July 1st to get ahead of any insane production he might have next year - in fact I'm guessing they're already discussing frameworks with him & his agent.

Frankly I'd be comfortable going up to 12.5x8 I think, if it had to be done. By the time the extension would start, the cap is already well over $100M. Plus he's only 26 and hasn't had much of a history of injuries. An 8 year deal would start when he's 27 and a half, and go until he's 36.

Smart piece of work by the Avs FO, IMO.

Yup. I know i've been calling for a Rants trade since early last season. A handful of others did as well. I'm loving Necas and have 0 regrets that Rants is gone. He was dogging it while getting lined up for perfect shots. Thats all it was.

The only thing we need to do is get Necas done and not f*** around this summer.

I understand what you're saying, and, yeah, having better linemates generally increases production, but what I'm trying to say is that he was able to elevate his linemates and produce in Buffalo with a middle six role and mediocre wingers. Hell, last year here he was producing well for his role with Parise as his most common winger

So I don't think it's fair to say his slump is down to having less talented wingers to play with

It's really going to be interesting the rest of the year to see how this trade looks. For Colorado as long as Necas plays reasonably and Drury continues his solid 3rd line play it's a win. Carolina pretty much has to win the Cup or re-sign 96 long term for it to be a successful trade.

Signing Rantanen long term doesn't automatically make that trade a success for Carolina. If he trends like Huberdeau has done with Calgary then re-signing him will be a disaster too.

It would be one thing if he was popping goals here and there, and the assist totals dropped. It's a whole other issue if he can't start finding the net. From the games I've watched he's getting chances, and not converting, and while his minutes are down he's having to work twice as hard, or at times he's coasting around like he did here.

The other night one of the announcers started talking about how he is so good on the boards, and Mikko promptly gets pinned and stripped like mid sentence.

The other team goes the other way and scores.

They would be smart to wait.

Anyone paying TOP dollar for Mikko is likely going to regret it as soon as November of 2025.
 
Dude's like a more talented, bigger (?), and faster version of Burakovsky. He's a one-man transition game.

As for Rants, I don't think it's MacKinnon he misses. It's Makar, Toews, and the offensive scheme that did everything to push puck movement up the ice from the back end forward. I really did wonder if the Canes, who, last I checked, much prefer to dump and chase, would be a good fit for 96.

Also, the Avs have been a good-to-great offensive team without ever really producing offense from the hashmarks on down, they much prefer high-and-low open cycling. In fact when teams force them to try and grind it out in the corners, they struggle. The Canes are, again, last I checked, all about this. So...yeah. I said before I wondered if it would be a good fit and so far, I don't think it has been. Though to be fair I haven't seen a single Canes game since he joined them.

I think it's just one of many variables likely contributing to whatever is making him be nearly useless.

Hardly making excuses for the guy - he's paid enough that he should be able to carry a couple of our scrubs and not do absolutely zero lol :ha:

That video of Necas does give me the feels...but not quite Forsberg. At some point, Foppa would have driven through that mass of humanity to get a shot on goal, instead of skating all the way around it and passing. But yes, he was just absolutely skating through folks but they also kept him out of the box and forced him to go outside their perimeter.

Back on Rants, I don't want to see a player I like get screwed over... but I have to believe Mikko is running the risk of having turned down damn near 12M for 8 years with the Avs and is going to end up signing something like 10M x 7 years or taking a one year deal to try and up it (which would be a terrible choice for him).

Some players immediately sign with their new team. The fact that Rants didn't, tells me Tlusty has concerns as well and his rate for next season is not going to be anywhere near as high as he thought, unless he choses to go play for a bottom feeder... but even then, why would Waddell, Verbeek, Conroy, Grier or Guerin pay top dollar to a one-time PP specialist who doesn't really play in any zone outside of the right circle?

I really don't think Mikko had an appreciation for just how damn good he had it here, and this is going to be rough watching him find that out.

It holds up, he hasn't been a positive force in setting up or maintaining the cycle.

When 9296 were on they were a machine in that regard though. He can be good at that, but not in his current form.

It's hilarious that he can make a whole team puck watch him with Mack out there.

Forsberg is my favorite player of all time. I do not invoke his name lightly.

These are for the full season, so they include Rantanen’s time with us.

I just want to point out the skating speed first and foremost.

Mikko is in the bottom third of speed amongst all NHL players. He drags his fat ass around the ice.

Necas is in the top 2 percentile at 98%.

Speed kills in Bednar’s system.

Also… zone entries.

Mikko at 18% compared to Necas at 94%. That means Mikko lets somebody else drive the play, Necas does it himself like an absolute machine.
