Confirmed with Link: [COL, CAR, CHI] Rantanen-Hall to CAR, Necas-Drury-25 2nd-26 4th to COL, Chi 25 3rd to Chi (Ret 50% on Mikko)

This notion that MacFarland and the agent had broken communication or a lack of transparency is just silly.

Andy Scott, who represents Mikko, is the same agent as Mackenzie Blackwood, Calvin de Haan, and Tye Felhaber.

Blackwood - acquired and signed to a new deal as an impending UFA just 1 month ago
de Haan - signed 7 months ago
Felhaber - signed 1 month ago

This is a guy with several Avs clients. CMac and him were able to get a deal done for Blackwood, in a similar situation albeit not a star player like Rantanen, just one month ago.

At this point, they would've been in regular contact, if not daily.

Scott was able to convince Mikko that he could get him Draisaitl-like numbers and Mikko listened to him.

Period.
Sounds like Tampering if you ask me...

I think they know how much he relied on Mack for points. Now he's gotta be the guy in Carolina while deeper, less top end talent.

He'll still get his # from someone i'm sure, but it wouldn't surprise me to see a decently sized dip in his production.
If he just turns the clock back two years, he will be absolutely fine. He has been very reliant on MacKinnon for the past year and a half, maybe even the last two seasons. But before that, he absolutely did drive a line by himself and his production without MacKinnon was fairly similar to what it was with him. He's still in his prime, so I do think that's very much possible, if this trade is a kick in his ass.

Would you have traded Mikko for Eichel? That's the only center I can think of.

No, because the Avs had Kadri back in 2021. Had they just kept Kadri this 2C nonsense never would have happened.

But back in 2023 or 2024, after Kadri walked, you make Rantanen available with 1-2 full years left on his contract and I think you would be surprised what centers that "aren't available" suddenly become available.

It's a moot point now, they waited until the 11th hour and still got a decent package for where his value was as a depreciating asset. But they still don't have a 2C worth a damn and about a month to figure it out or another season of MacKinnon and Makar's prime are wasted.

Yeah as a fan i'm rooting for him. But i'm with Whit from Spittin Chiclets. He could've stayed if he wanted too. I think the trade will be alot more balanced over time than we all realize. I'm super excited about Drury taking Kelly's spot and being able to spread some playing time out more.

No centers name is coming to mind that I'd trade Mikko for in the last two years that's realistic though.

I know everyone is probably fatigued of contract talks/projections right now, but based on current level of play in his career what're we thinking Necas's next contract might look like?

Obviously it's dependent on how he performs in an Avs jersey, but I'm wondering ultimately how significant the savings be on his next deal vs Rantanen in everyone's opinion.

9.25M lol

I have no idea.. If he continues this years pace. Probably more.

It was not an ultimatum. The player had no idea a trade was possible. That's what I mean by this ultimatum. They did not signal Rantanen that "if you don't take 11.75, well will trade you". I don't really know what else to say, when this has been reported by basically every insider, stated by Rantanen and the rest of the Avs players.
Rantanen's name was mentioned on trade boards in the week before the trade, including in Friedman's 32 thoughts... Literally followed by Carolina being in the market and Necas' name mentioned. Rantanen and his agent should have been able to read between the lines on that one, but his agent probably told Mikko that it was just a negotiation tactic.

It's just stupid to give up all that for a measly third rounder (THEIR OWN third rounder to be exact). And to just wait there and absorb any salary that gets thrown at you!? If that's me I try to get at least one more draft pick out of that beforehand.

I just don't think Davidson is a good GM, and this is just speculation, because they've managed to fail even their own low expectations, ownership probably just told him to dump salary however he could. I'm guessing he's already in big trouble following their horribly embarrassing showing at the Winter Classic and a panicky firing of Luke Richardson.

He obviously wasn't just sitting around and agreeing to retain whatever number was given him. Clearly it was a very calculated amount he agreed to retain since they saved $250-500k in salary in the deal. He'd obviously never have agreed to retain a mystery amount blindly.

I don't know how much leverage they had.

They basically approached this in a way where they wanted to save money but take on cap. Clear ownership style trade. I don't believe they were in a position to bargain. The Avs and Canes likely knew what they were trying to do here.
They actually didn't take on cap, they actually GAINED cspspace, as well as saving cash.

50% of Mikko AAV = $4.625m
Hall AAV = $6m
Cap gained $1.375m (pro-rated obviously)

Pretty good trade for them, as they got the pick they'd likely get for Hall at the TDL, and on top of that saved cash and gained capspace. All they really gave up was a retention slot but they had two left so who cares. Shrewd GM'ing I'd say.

After seeing more info coming out about the trade here is my personal take:

I believe the Avs did tell Mikko's camp that it was as high as they wanted to go but Mikko's camp believed it was negotiation tactics. They believe it would go like the Landy's and Mack's talks. That is why he said he thought he had more time. They thought it would go to at least the TDL or possibly to the end of June and the Avs would finally have to cave for at least 12.5M.

However I'll take it even further...I believe also that the Avs were sure the 11.75M would be initially refused as a negotiation tactic by Mikko's camp and that is why they offered it but.......here it goes.......they did not want to even pay that and they used that refusal as the opportunity to go ahead with the trade. They are now able to say they wanted to make him the highest paid W but also use that refusal as an excuse to walk away from it.

I think they wanted to do it in the summer but at the time they wanted a lot more than Necas and Drury because Necas hadn't broken out yet. CAR couldn't do it for that much but now that Necas broke out the Avs were OK to do it.

I think the Florida/Calgary trade changed a lot of things. CMac saw Florida trade one of their star players and go on to win a Stanley Cup. It proved to them that if you get the right pieces you can stay a contender and keep your window opened longer. That remains to be seen with the Avs obviously but that trade was a proof that it can be done. They knew they couldn't afford quality goaltending and depth down the lineup with keeping Mikko even at 11.75M not for the next few years anyway especially with Makar's extension coming up. Extending Necas should be possible with the cap going up as much as it is reported.

The Avs surprised Mikko's camp with an early trade because they didn't want to give them an opportunity to take that 11.75M offer.
