Confirmed with Link: [COL, CAR, CHI] Rantanen-Hall to CAR, Necas-Drury-25 2nd-26 4th to COL, Chi 25 3rd to Chi (Ret 50% on Mikko)

Very interesting info from Friedman. If you want my conspiracy theory, I think CMac might've been leaning towards trading Mikko all along. He'd been spitballing a trade with Carolina since the draft, gave the Mikko camp a (first and?) final offer and didn't even use the extra time he had to negotiate. I think they had the analytics to back up their argument that Mikko is more a product of MacKinnon than anything else, saw his effort level continue to fall flat and, most importantly, I think CMac was just sick of having virtually zero breathing room to work with in their cap structure.

Necas was probably a name that was thrown around early and after he exploded this year, CMac decided to peel the bandaid and pull the trigger early. I have little doubt they targeted Drury specifically as well, to become a much-needed defensive boon in the bottom-6 with offensive upside that's young and cost-controlled.

Given Mikko's "surprise" of the trade, the Avs essentially gave their final offer (one you could argue is a bit of a lowball, despite making him the priciest wing in the league), which was the lowest amount they would've been comfortable with while also knowing it was one Mikko's camp would never accept.

Regardless, it definitely took a set of brass ones to go in the direction that they did. Now there's no excuse to not maximize the cap and add the depth needed to give them another legitimate shot.

That fits his interview about needing better depth too. Now he can build some depth.

It does sound pretty logical all in all. It would make sense.

He has fixed the goaltending. Which was the biggest issue. Then the depth (which this helps a bit) then we need to solve the defense and potentially a goal scorer and we have a pretty good team. Overall definitely better team than before.

As a fan, it sucks to hear when a player is surprised and I believe him when he says that too. But at the end of the day he/his agent have to know the position the Avs are in too. You can’t play hardball with a team that is up against it without knowing there’s not just one way it could end.

It feels like a lifetime ago, but all season it's been in the back of my mind about Mikko missing all of training camp during his last extension. He signed on September 28th, less than a week before the 2019-2020 season started. It was reported at the time the Avs were looking at $8.5 and Mikko $9.5, and the contract ended up being more favorable for the player ($9.25).

Combined with slightly declining analytics and no contract rights this go around, I could see CMac thinking "we're not doing this again" and pivoting after Colorado's contract offer was declined.

That's definitely a great point. CMac would've known exactly how they operate and not wanted to play hardball again, especially if there was any indication that they were preferring to push negotiations into July.

Same. Even though I'm sad, I'm not surprised.

That's what I've been saying all along, Rantanen's stats this year are fool's gold. Thanks for posting the actual stats.

This is just my opinion but I am sure the Avs did not even want to pay him 11.75M. That contract would have been scary the way he was playing this year. The contract could have aged very badly right from year 1 if the effort wouldn't not have been there.

I love Mikko for what he brought to this team but he was extremely frustrating this season especially on the PP. I said before that he was the main issue on the PP by barely moving when handling the puck. You saw today the difference when Necas was moving all over the offensive zone on the PP. It forced the other guys especially Mack to move a lot and that PP was fantastic and created chaos for the defenders.

I would not be surprised at all if Necas scores more points than Mikko after switching teams.

I agree with that, I was thinking the same thing.

Everything frustrating that we saw from Rantanen game after game for years now, CMac saw it too. If CMac somehow became convinced that his numbers were mostly the byproduct of Mackinnon there's no reason to keep him even at "only" 11.75M.

Whoa. Just....whoa.

Maybe everyone needs to chill. And Necas is 6' 3"? Feeling better all the time.

Every team knew if you could get the puck to Rantanen on the Avs PP, the PP was basically cooked. Don't let MacKinnon touch the puck and force Makar to be the shooter and if he scores from the point, he scores from the point. But make damn sure Rantanen gets to be the primary guy and force him into his own mistakes. More often than not, it worked.

How did we let him go? :o

In reality, did we scam Carolina? What the hell?? Those empty net points were crucial in the end.. yet we always ***** about Rantanens pointless points. Not that pointless anymore eh? ;)

I saw a comment (don't remember where) that a Canes fan made saying that Necas is the guy that will break into the zone and go through the whole other team by himself only to give it away. I wanted to reply that at least he made it into the other zone, Rants gives that puck away standing completely still at his own blue line.

Don't get me wrong, Rants is awesome, angry Rantanen cross checking everyone is hilarious. However, he clearly stopped carrying play and became basically a shot only player; if he were still the player he was earlier in his career where he was a dominating force upon himself I'd be pissed the Avs moved him. At this point, there's a chance he finds that form again. There's also a chance he continues the way he has been playing.

If I calculated correctly:

Mikko scores point every 22min
Necas scores point every 16.6min

Prorated to 60min game:

Mikko puts up 2.72 points per game (60min)
Necas puts up 3.61 points per game (60min)

Mike Kelly brought up the stats of Necas on NHL network. In 2 games so far with the Avs (even if small sample size) Necas has more controlled zone entries, more offensive possession time etc.. than MacK who’s #1 in all those analytics, but Necas has more in 2 games. Encouraging I guess.

It must help Necas just MacK being there. It still takes away opponents focus from Necas. Imagine adding Nuke to that mix. Oh boy. That would be crazy line to play against. Possession monsters.

I’m glad the Utah Yeti name was shot down because they would have tried to steal that Avs logo.

That article, and the tweet it references, is a bit misleading. It states the 11.7 number like that was the offer. When if you listen to the podcast where he said it, all he said was that the Avs were willing to make him the highest paid winger, which meant over 11.7 - more than Panarin.

Could the offer have been 11.7 and no higher, maybe. But it also might have been 12.5 just below Mac. Not that it really matters, but yeah.

To be fair, Mikko absolutely drove the top line in 21-22 when MacK was out for 8 games and to a lesser degree in 22-23 when MacK was out for 11 games. Those were probably the greatest stretches we've seen from him in the regular season. But yeah, thaaaat was about it.
