Feels like Vancouver is in a bit of a pickle, if true. Their locker room seems a mess and then they just got scooped.

Sounds like it’s their fault, if true. I’d assume Colorado would have reached out with a “hey, we’re considering X…” and Van management looked deep into the fire, took a sip of coffee, and said “this is fine.”

Rantanen is the better player hands down. If Necas blows it up, then they're back to square one trying to re-sign a top caliber guy, but not as top caliber the guy they just let go. Guys like Mikko just don't become available, ESPECIALLY not w/o high picks and top prospects added, even with a really good player going back the other way.
Realistically they couldn't afford to re-sign both Rantanen and (the following year) Makar

& you still don’t extend the window by going from Rantanen to Necas

You didn’t even get 1st round picks to use in the follow up trades

They could have made other trades with Rantanen on the roster as well
Necas has 9 less points then Rantanen this year... And he doesn't benefit from playing with Mackinnon.

...But he's about to.

It's okay - you're not a fan of the team and have limited understanding of the secondary/future implications of this trade. We don't need to discuss this any further because we will not agree.

Who was the last player as good as Rantanen to be traded in season?

Frank Mahovlich in 1968 and 1971, and Phil Esposito in 1975 come to mind.

After that?

The big deals I can think of were in the off-season.

Maybe Doug Gilmour in 1992, but he was no Rantanen.

LOL if 1st round picks are your argument. They literally got Martin Necas

All fair but things would be incredibly tight. I can see why other blue chip assets weren’t on the table given Mikko’s pending free agency. You maybe could argue the Avs should have made this deal a year ago. But we are where we are.

I think the beginning of this year and the complete lack of depth that led to such a slow start with all the injuries and Nuke suspension really made the Avs consider just how they need to move forward in their team construction. MacK and Makar are the north stars and even with Mikko that was always the case. I think the looming specter of Makar’s next deal loomed large.

You can say they didn’t get any firsts to have flexibility but the truth is they’ve actually got some breathing room now to make other moves with impactful financial considerations. If they don’t make the “right” moves, it could easily look foolish, agreed. But moves are more possible now.

50% retention, Hall, and a D+ prospect ;)

I'm guessing two things
1) Most teams probably wanted retention on Hall as a rental. CAR agreed to take it all
2) It's a favour to Hall to let him move on

Why wouldn't they just retain on Hall then.

I know he's been bad and has questionable character, but is he not returning a 3rd @3m pro rated to a team with scoring help needs trying to push for the playoffs like Calgary, Minny, LAK, Rangers etc?

This will be a great follow till playoffs. Seems a lot of people don't know who Necas is at all. I agree Rantanan is better but I'm curious how Necas looks in that Avs top 6 and how Rants looks without MacK.
Come playoff, you only get to put 3 forwards on the ice at a time. I'd rather one of them be Mikko, than Marty. It is going to be fun watching Marty, Nate and Cale, though.

Colorado would be better if it flipped Necas for JT Miller.

Van could take Necas in trade and then sign Mitch Marner next year

Rantanen is the next Huberdeau, boom I said it.

As someone who owned Huberdeau in fantasy then and Rantanen in fantasy now yeah I pretty much expect this outcome 😢

Hall must have had negative value at 6M. CHI opened 1.5M cap space, gained a 3rd and lost Hall. Seems fine to me? :dunno:

Yep people keep acting like the Rantanen retention and Hall are two separate assets. But Hall at full price is not an attractive asset and that is what was traded here: Hall with no retention.

As I mentioned above if you said Hall at 57% retention (if it were allowed) netted a high 3rd round pick you would find it reasonable. And basically that is the practical effect.

These retention trades always seem to confuse people. Easiest just to look at what the team gave and what they got.
