so chicago traded hall and 50% of rantanen's contract just to get their own 3rd pick back? was Hall's value that awful?
50% retention, Hall, and a D+ prospect ;)

I'm guessing two things
1) Most teams probably wanted retention on Hall as a rental. CAR agreed to take it all
2) It's a favour to Hall to let him move on

You swallow the cost sometimes to keep one of the best wingers in the league. Never gonna find that chemistry again.

He wasn't worth 14M alone but keeping him/Makar/Mack together was worth more than that.
The problem is the depth takes a hit, which has been a big thing last couple years if MacK/Rants/Makar were not producing at crazy rates to stay above water. Getting Necas and saving 3M ish in cap hit this year and having him for next year should help towards getting money elsewhere in the line up (one would hope)

Easy to say that now, but Rantanen probably wanted 14M/year. Aside from that being more than MacKinnon would make, then Makar would need to be even higher in 2 years. Hard to win when 3 guys take up roughly half your cap space.

Nah, been saying it for a year now that I wouldn't want him at that price and would prefer to trade him this year.

I loved Mikko more than MacK for awhile. He just stopped being himself starting last season. You'll see plenty of Avs fans discussing it last year.
Mikko was an amazing player maker, elite passer and had crazy vision. However, the last year and half, something changed. Lots of his traits just disappeared (especially the elite passing) and he seemed just out of it for many games. His elite skill masked some of this, but many Avs fans have been noticing it for a long time. Still has one of the best shots in the league though.

Necas or a playoff run with Rantanen who then walks for free.

I know which one of these I am picking, especially with Mackinnon and Makar locked up.

Necas at 6.5M is pretty great value, assuming he scores PPG this year.

What was MacKinnon's relationship with Rantanen? Not saying they'd need his sign off, but you'd think they'd want his input at some level.
They fist bumped cause Rants told him he'll come back in UFA and sign for 8 years 10million.
