The teams made the trade knowing Byram was the better player but one concussion away from losing large chunks of his career.

Not that difficult to understand.
Apparently it is hard to understand, because nobody with any sense of mind thought Byram was the better player after the season he was putting together in Colorado.

He might end up the better player, the upside to be a Top pairing guy is there. But based on each guys play this season pre-trade, Colorado was getting the better player while Buffalo was hoping to cash in on Byrams upside. So far it looks like a great bet for them to make. But we're 3 games in... Probably gonna need about 300 more games quite frankly to really decide either way.

I dont think the injury aspect played a role at all quite frankly. Byram hasn't really had an injury issue in over a year now, and nothing concussion related in 2 years if I think.

I don't give a f*** if Byram wins a Norris trophy in the future, if we win the Cup this year with Mittelstadt.

There are definitely Sabres fans out there waiting patiently for Bo to have his first bad game.
And a small minority of Avs fans that threw a hissy fit at every single thing Byram did they didn’t like and barely ever enjoyed Byram’s many exceptional qualities.

Mitts looks like a real nice 2C fit for the Avs. Very encouraging start to his Avs journey. Avs are 3-0 with him in the lineup and the team is driving possession in waves now. He’s a big part of that.

Trading a 22 year old 4th overall pick who's already trended to at least a second pairing D with high upside isn't exactly a genius level move.
It appears the Avs acquired a legitimate 2C starting his prime years when their biggest need was 2C.

Buffalo parted with a good, 25 year old top 6 Center to acquire Byram.

How is this lost on you? That the Avs added a second line C to their team in this trade. And he’s team controlled for the next two seasons after this one.

Factor that into your analysis.

I’ve been watching. He’s played well and got some PP1 burn. You could tell there was some growing pains there and some entry adjustments but he looks like he’s handling himself as we all knew he would. He’s not a flashy guy, just a dependable playmaker that won’t make many mistakes that will cost his team. His patience and vision will fit in well there.

The urge to blame the most prominent defenceman on screen when a goal is scored is impossible for some people to ignore. Especially when the defenceman in question is a 6'6" 1st-overal pick on a struggling team.

It was well-predicted prior to his career by those familiar with Power's game that a certain segment of the Sabres fan base would not be able to see past "he's big and he doesn't hit".

Funny enough the most prominent D there is Dahlin, who is the one who actually makes the soft play on Raymond. But Sabres fans let that go and blame Power.

As an Avs fan, I don't think I ever really had a concern regarding Bo's effort level. He is a guy that really fluctuates with his confidence. When he is feeling confident he really takes over plays and leads the rush, looks strong defensively. When he is a bit down on himself he starts making questionable plays, jumping up when he shouldn't, hesitant defensively, just kind of looks like he is generally double guessing every move. I really hope he can show off his abilities and reach that potential many of us thought he had for the Sabres (and also hope that Mitts can continue to play strong for the Avs!)
Very astute, and factual. Love Bo. He’s in a good spot

Buffalo flying right now. :thumbu:Push for the playoffs!
So far so good. Seems like both teams got players that will mesh well and fill needs, even if Bo is a leftie that near instant chemistry with Dahlin has been a joy to watch. Sucked to lose Casey with how well he was playing, but perhaps losing a well liked guy in the locker room gave them the wake-up call they needed to know no one is off limits in a trade.

I think Avs fans are going to be pleased with Mittelstadt and what he brings. The kid has a ton of tenacity and reminds me of O'Reilly in that regard. He's very good in all zones and can be a clutch player. I think he's exactly what the Avs needed. I'm going to go on a limb and say he gets nominated for a Selke or two within the next four-five years. He may not win one, but he'll be nominated.

Same. The kid can skate.
You guys listened too much to the loud minority of Avs fans that don’t know anything about hockey and love to bash certain players.

Sam Girard is also a really good player that’s underrated by this contingent.

Whereas Devon Toews is a really good player that’s overrated.

Byram has many qualities of an elite player and he showed those qualities every single game he wore the Avs sweater.

He was asked to play with some scrubs and try harda this year. Like RyJo, JAck Johnson, Colton, O’Connor and Manson, his most frequent teammates. He’s playing with better players in Buffalo. It shows.

His defensive metrics were always better than than offensive metrics in Colorado. His offensive game is the part of his development that has the longer distance to make up.

And his skating is pretty much second to none. Smooth, fast and good acceleration. He’s an elite skater. Skates well backwards too. Toews is a very good skater but gets walked by certain forwards. I never saw Byram get walked by anyone. Even McDavid wasn’t able to turn the corner in him.

Too me…. His comp is Josi. And Byram will be getting Norris votes in a few years.

You are probably in the "loud minority of Avs fans" that think that. Doe that mean you "don’t know anything about hockey and love to bash certain players"?

This whole post screams "if an Avs fan doesn't agree with me, he is wrong."

Absolutely.

Which makes the giant race to decide 'who won?!' even funnier.

I wish the Avalanche a long run. I hope the Sabres end this g.d. 13 year drought.

It's novel to have a thread where there isn't much of the usual denigrating of a departing player and there is active support that the departing guy does well in his new team. It's pleasant for sure.

The relationship between avs and sabres fans is good again, after we shipped out that guy who tried to cowardly slay makar from behind.

Buffalo looks like a much better team after trading Mittlestadt and culling some dead weight in Johnson and Okposo.

I am starting to think that Granato is finding wisdom in not having to balance his top 3 lines.

What makes this trade so great is how long we are going to be able to talk about it. Colorado will be great for years to come. Buffalo (hopefully) breaks through at some point in the next decade. They’re pieces you don’t see moved very often with more than just the potential to be difference makers…they are making a difference. The only way it could be more interesting is if Buffalo was already a solid playoff team. Hopefully that happens soon because this conversation only gets better when they do

This to me is the most interesting aspect of the trade from a Sabres standpoint. Byram is doing very well with Buffalo to the surprise of practically ZERO Avs fans. Let's say he finishes the rest of this season with close to a PPG with the Sabres. At the end of this season, Byram will have 1 year left on his $3.85M contract - which will still leave him an RFA when it's over. How are the Sabres going to proceed ? Offer him an extension at the end of THIS season or wait it out at the risk of it costing maybe even more if he's able to produce at that clip over the course of a full season ?

From a Byram standpoint, if he sees Dahlin at $11M and Power already at $8.35M, is he really accepting less than $8.35M per year ??
Hard to say buffalo still can gave a cap crunch in 2026 forecast. I dont buy into thr caps going up because its ignoring tjr local tv revenue problems coming out of RSN collapse.

I can see a scene io where buuffalo signs him to 3 yrs then makes a decision. Yhr on the y way I see him getting signed to $9M or do next summer I'd of other big salary trades occur like trading power.
this is the trade that rejuvenated the sabres. all aboard the sabres playoff train.

Around new yrs time the sabres goalie got hot.

During that time there were what I call 5 quality starts where they only got 1 pt. These were games where 2 or less goals scored on goalie in regulation
1-0 losd to van
2-1 to dallas
3-1 loss to tb (EN g)
2-1 loss in ot to tor
STL was 2-1 till st louis scored under 2 min to make it 3-1.
WPGtied 2'2 under 10 when they scored late.

Pretty sure they’ll sign him long term after naming him captain. He just screams Buffalo’s next captain to me.
