Please stop with the Mitts is the best player this season. He had a good first half but is still trending as a 60 point player. He has been okay at best since January. He was the odd man out, the worst of our 3 centers. Cozens and Thompson have gotten back to their game and are infinitely more dynamic. I have watched two games with Byram and when he is paired with Power or Dahlin they drive more offense than Mitts ever has.

Thanks for saying this… Mitts has the most points on the team this year, but that should not be confused with being the best player. Scoring the most points when a bunch of superior players are having down years simultaneously does not make you the best player on the team.

It’s fully possible he scores closer to 70 points on the avalanche, but it won’t be because he’s playing at a different level, it’ll just be because he has people finishing what he started at a higher degree. Don’t think he will improve upon his actual play there, meanwhile if Byram keeps playing at this level he’s currently playing at I would make that trade again every day of the week. It’s harder to get a 22 yo potential top pairing defenseman with that offensive ability than it is to get a third line center… Which is what the Sabres were always going to use mitts for. That’s not judging the avalanche at all… I think they got exactly what they needed out of the trade.

He’s an incredible talent. A true number 1. He’s not as good as Makar. He’s not as polished at Toews.

So the Avs gave him a tough role. Be our number 3 and carry weaker lines and weaker D partners. Get little PP time and be a 5 vs 5 workhorse that skews defensive.

It’ll have made him better defensively than his peers. Byram is definitely better defensively than Makar. Much more physical in the corners and particularly in front of the net.

But his offensive game was stagnated by his poor teammate quality and role this season.

Freed from scrubs like RyJo and Jack Johnson, he should explore. Also helps to get away from our inept 3rd line (Colton - Wood and LOC) three guys that are heavy players but where offense goes to die.
I'm a Bo fan... but this doesn't track from the eye test. He's excelling in Buffalo because he can do w/e the f*** he wants lol

The Avs have Mitts for 3 more years of team control (including this one)... so it gives them "some fire" for 3 more playoff runs.
I’ll have to double check but I’m pretty sure Mitts is only an RFA for this season. Meaning he’ll be a UFA 24/25 season and this is last offseason he’ll be arb eligible.

I got out or the arctic circle to enjoy some sun and booze and will take this opportunity to apologize for my hardline stance on this trade. I still don't thinks Mitts for Byram was a good decision, but I understand it and will try to keep an open mind on it going forward.

It's not as lopsided as I originally presented. Chalk it up to living in the cold dark for months on end and being grumpy due to that and the team.

Byram is excelling in Buffalo because he’s getting the D Toews treatment. He’s getting to play with other good players.

If Toews had to play most of his shifts with RyJo, jack Johnson and our offensively inept middle six (Colton, wood, LOC, etc) Toews would play would have suffered as well.

Byram will never be as good as Makar. He’s not currently as good as Toews though he’ll surpass Toews in the not distant future. The Avs made him a middle pair and gave him mostly junk to work with this season.

That was a bummer. Byram scored again tonight. He’s killing Detroit and showing the NHL he’s substantially better than Seider, which he is.

Avs are going to badly lose this trade. But if we win a Cup this year or next, I don’t t care because mission accomplished and that will require a 2C. Not Byram dragging washed up Jack Johnson around.

Fair point. But you don't trade a budding, dynamic defenseman with top-pairing potential for a player who was on the verge of busting about a year ago. The Avs traded a new Porsche for a used pick-up truck so they could make a Home Deport run, imho.

On the Avs Byram was not a budding, dynamic defensemen with top pairing potential. He was a guy that was struggling to find a meaningful role and couldn’t beat out the guys in front of him to establish a prime opportunity for himself.

This would be like saying trading for prime Martin St. Louis was dumb since he was on waivers

Shots will be slung after every good or bad game for the foreseeable future for these two players. I think it will end up as a win win trade

I think both fan bases are wishing their former player the best of luck. Mitts was a fan favorite in Buffalo, and Byram will always have a place in Avalanche lore

As a Sabres fan I am absolutely loving the Byram-Dahlin pairing. Byram is our 2nd or 3rd best player behind Dahlin and maybe UPL.

Told us what? That Byram has potential? We already knew that. This is like the guy loudly screaming I told you water was wet at a splash park
If he gets traded and immediately starts killing it for a new team I would say some of that potential you are talking about has been already realized and maybe he wasn't being used entirely right.

Sometimes some players just need a change of scenery, watching the Wings and Sabers game Byram looks special out there.

That is what quite a few Avs fans thought would happen. It seemed like he had plateaued on the Avs. Part of it is he likes to free wheel, but the Avs have a relatively tight structure. The other part is it seems he got into a mental funk knowing that they re-signed Toews and he, for whatever reason, couldn’t surpass Girard.

I really hope Bo continues to do great on the Sabres.

I think it’s a mix of things. He gets a lot more space to do his thing - someone mentioned it previously, but Bo did really well during the Avs cup run playing within the system. However, the last couple of years he has tried to free wheel like Makar, but he kept getting himself into trouble (penalties, giveaways and being out of position).

I honestly think a big part of it was that he had a mental block thinking he was stuck in his current situation. Being traded to a new team, he has room to grow again.
