I haven't seen enough of Franson to make an honest judgement of him but if he is Justin Schultz 2.0... keep him the F away from the Oilers. Oesterle is a better option.

If he was paid around 2 million he'd be worth a 3rd. Not worth it at 3+ million IMO

I remember the offseason last year when I wanted the guy on the Oilers and everyone was sure he would cost at least 5 million so I kinda gave up on him.

Then he signed for 3 something and I thought, what a steal.

Now Sabres would be lucky to give him away.

Wtf happened to Franson? The guy was a legitimate 2nd pairing guy who was elite on the PP when he left the Leafs

And shortly after he arrived in Nashville he was riding the pine.

Some guys just look better than they are in certain systems and to be frank, for bad teams. Dustin Penner put up good number for the Oilers too, but only because better players more worthy of his icetime didn't exist on that sad sack team.

He isn't exactly Schultz 2.0. Schultz is softer than a babies butt and made a ton of dumb mistakes. He is also a pretty decent skater and has a muffin of a shot. Franson is physical, has a good shot, but is slower than molasses and well, also makes a ton of dumb mistakes.

First accurate description of Franson to appear in this thread lol

No he isn't. At least Russell and Wideman can skate. Wideman is a good puckmover. Russell is better defensively and no worse with the puck aside from shooting. The only thing Franson has on either is his shot power and size. Really, Franson isn't a good player at all.

I remember him being disliked in Toronto too for the majority of his time until he was playing important minutes where you could actually understand why his numbers were good. He's not a terrible skater, he is slow though. He just plays differently, but he gets results.

Same thing with Marincin.
Fans when Marincin played bottom pairing: Way too slow, softest player in the league, makes too many mistakes.
Fans when Marincin played top-4: Great positioning, great stick-work and amazing defensively, very smart player.

It's odd what more playing time does to our eyes/memory of a player.

Agree and would be interesting to combo the best of both.

on topic

you have various options at different price points

TOP TOP SHELF:
Ristolainen, Trouba, etc, not likely to be available except for uber exorbitant price

SOLID, CAN FILL IN FOR TOP SHELF ON LIMITED BASIS
Klein, given supply and demand of RD, expensive, but do-able and possibly better value than a cheaper alternative
or
comparable to Klein, but a little pricier

TAKE A CHANCE
This could be a guy like Rafael Diaz, playing in Europe I think.
Has shown flashes didn't break onto a roster, but conceivably could
the better you select of these guys, the more likely they are to be keeping themselves busy already w/another gig and planning for NEXT year

EL CHEAPO RETREAD HOPE TO GET LUCKY
Franson et al.

Oil made a significant investment by dealing Hall for Larssen.
How much further do you want to go? What cost will you pay?
Answer this and with some consensus and names matching your choice will show quickly enough

Wow, a realistic target? Not something hf boards has often. That said, I agree that fans on is worth a 3rd, maybe something conditional. Though, I can see buf wanting a defender of some sort coming back- not a blue chip by any means, but someone they can develop and slot in a role, possibly a year or 2 down the road. Again, franson would absolutely fill a need for edm

Yak for Fran lol

Yak is not available right now .

Chiarelli says the jury’s still out on Yakupov.

“Certainly last year was well-chronicled to moving him … I don’t want to revisit that stuff,†said Chiarelli. “He’s a world-class talent who hasn’t been playing that way. He tells me through his agent that he wants to stay in Edmonton and play, so let’s ee.â€

With Expansion coming, Oilers need to wait till after to pay top dollar for a PP specialist, for now guys like Franson seem like decent low risk moves to try and fill a gap in the meantime.

Do you happen to have a link for this quote? It would be really handy in Yakupov threads

I'd be cool with a 4th that can turn into a 3rd depending on how many PP points he puts up.
