He absolutely should be. He has a cannon. The issue is that his shot was basically our only option last year so it became predictable. With Lucic causing havoc down low, and McDavid dangling and Eberle's hands in tight, Sekera should have more time and more options than just banging the puck through guys shin pads. Franson isn't the answer. He is awful.

Maybe we could get the Franson that played for the leafs? To me its another option that costs us next to nothing. I would be happy having Gryba back but Franson would be a much better fit with what we already have. He can always be waived.

He is a wasted contract spot and overpaid at that.

I think Franson's the definition of a "needs the right role" kind of guy. He got tools, but doesn make much use of them by himself. Be it due to a lower hockey sense, or just not being good enough. Could explain why he bombed in his return to Nashville and in Buffalo. He was always behind better options: Weber, Ellis, Jones, Risto, Bogo. When you never get a chance to showcase your (few and specialised) strengthes, you're just going to be remembered for your mistakes.

Here's definitely not a top 4 (could fill-in maybe with the right partner) but I think he could look good consistently being teed up by McDavid or RNH, and getting softer minutes behind the Klefbom-Larsson and Sekera pairings.

No worse than Jultz, Clendening, Potter, etc etc. As another poster said maybe Franson could see more success being utilized properly. I'd rather he be our #7 than an ahl tweener or prospect needing playing time.

Agree. He's got useful but limited tools. He can produce and drive shot differentials if placed in a somewhat soft, offensive orientation. Edmonton is perfectly suited to do so by putting him on a 3rd pair with Davidson and PP time.

He has a big shot and can move the puck (if given time). Play him in a correct role and he'll be worth it. Use him like Buffalo and Nashville 2.0 (on his offhand, not in an offensive role) and you'll be disappointed.

Not yet. When Nelson takes his spot then you can have him for whatever.

He needs the most favorable situations possible and even then he's not a good even strength contributor. Decent option for running a 2nd PP unit though (that's why I would be hesitant to move him right now, we absolutely need our PP2 to get better)

This seems like a well drawn up fantasy to me. You guys definitely need a PP specialist on your blueline. Franson would actually be a decent fit, and a budget acquisition coming off a down year.

Take him for nothing.

The Sabres still walk away laughing.

He's useless. I thought it was a terrible signing at the time & it somehow just gets worse over time. I understand his contact is not long term & not huge money - that reflects just how bad a player I think he is. Belongs nowhere near the NHL imo.

Sabres need to add D to make this trade. Unless you want Brady Austin as our 7th defensemen, with Falk and a rookie in the top 6.

We've purged all of those guys. Why would we take on a replacement awful contract? I don't want a #7 that makes that kind of money at all. Sign Kris Russell. Sign Wizniewski (he's only on a try out, he could still sign a full time deal). Trade for Dennis Wideman. There are still better options out there than Franson.

Franson is better than Russell and Wideman, not sure why you'd want those two instead of Franson.

No he isn't. At least Russell and Wideman can skate. Wideman is a good puckmover. Russell is better defensively and no worse with the puck aside from shooting. The only thing Franson has on either is his shot power and size. Really, Franson isn't a good player at all.

We need a decent replacement for him before we ship him off.

Useless? He was an above-average 3rd pairing NHL defender last year. For how terrible he purportedly is, he was better than most of our D in possession numbers, can actually make a pass out of the zone, and didn't get scored on all that much at ES. But keep clinging to those times he gets beat to the outside - he's an easy whipping boy.

After the Pysyk deal, Buffalo isn't trading Franson until it finds someone as good or better than him to play RD3. But that won't stop you from shouting, I'm sure.

Wtf happened to Franson? The guy was a legitimate 2nd pairing guy who was elite on the PP when he left the Leafs

I fully agree that an upgrade is needed here & being able to ship Franson out without having to take on any salary in return would be the perfect move towards being able to do this.

Any proposed replacement wouldn't necessarily have to come back in the same deal.

As for the bolded - that just emphasises how absolutely pathetic our D was last season.

If Franson were a FA right now I think most Oil fans would be demanding we give him a contract or at least a PTO. He may have lost a step, but his booming point shot definitely is worth trying out, even if that tryout is a full season. We as fans were stepping over ourselves to practically demand a contract for Wisniewski (not just a PTO), and he's got serious injury issues and is in sharp decline.

As for Franson's salary, I don't care about what he makes and it's not like there are expensive contracts out there today for us to save our cap space for. It's only 1 season so there's no cap management issue.
