Franson is useless in today's NHL. Maybe if you can protect him on the third pairing, but why does Edmonton need another defenseman to put on the third pairing where he can't **** anything up too badly? That doesn't make any sense.

The guy just doesn't have the wheels to be effective. Before Nashville brought him back during an ill-fated TDL season, Preds fans had been told by some within the Maple Leafs fandom that he was a solid second pairing guy. I was hopeful that he would make an already good defense even better. He didn't. Not only did he make the defense worse, but he made the team itself worse. I wouldn't give up a 7th round pick for the guy if it were up to me.

His only saving grace is that his shot seems to have eyes, but even that isn't enough to begin to make up for his weaknesses. He has size, too, but he has no mobility so in order to use his size he has to be in the right place at the right time. He doesn't have the vision or IQ to put himself in those places. Instead, he forces it and winds up out of position. Franson is who you get if you want to see how good your goalie is against odd-man rushes, or maybe if you just hate your goalie and want him to waive his NMC.

Franson is horrible. Probably is the cause of more goals against than what he puts up.

Love that he's not on the Leafs anymore. Seems like the last kind of Dman the Oilers should be looking for.

I'd rather just invite Wisniewski and Rundblad to camp on a PTO. Thats low risk with nothing given up. Franson is really bad

Actually all three of those guys are bad defensively.

But the Oilers need a RHD PP ace badly enough, they can have a specialist. Wiz would be the best PP guy, maybe one of the league's best, but he might not be healthy enough to stick.

Oh, I agree that they're all bad defenseman but Wiz, and Rundbad will be cheaper(both acquire and salary) than Franson

I guess that's your trade off, talent and skill of an NHL #6 in Franson for probably a 3rd or lower draft pick and prospect that might see some ECHL time maybe.
Or the unlikelyhood of Wiz turning it around after a full MCL injury that took him out for all but 45 seconds of NHL time or an even bigger question mark in Rundblad who may or may not turn into a NHL #6.
I just don't think the Oil have the LHD to cover for Franson or lesser players weaknesses. Sekera will play to high in the depth chart and you probably don't want to anchor Klefbom with Franson 5v5 as it'd probably limit your 2nd pair too much to an Ozone start pairing more than anything. Nurse/Davidson I don't feel are ready to play the Hamhuis to Bieksa role for that type of pairing.

Davidson might but overall this is a good post. Nurse has the wheels to make up for Franson's lack of speed but not the experience to do so.

This is a pretty good description. I don't get why people say he won't hit though. He's pretty physical and makes some good hits. But he's still a pretty bad NHL'r. He got slower and slower as the year went on too. Only thing he,does well is shoot the puck

He's more physical in the sense that he'll use his body to angle people out and separate them from the puck. He's not going to give you any big hits along the boards though. He's deceptively strong too, which makes it a shame he doesn't use it more

He did last year. Not that it really matters, but he had some big hits along the boards.
