He backchecks hard and wants to strip pucks (for a breakaway the other way), but he doesn’t like to play too much down low in his own zone, he’d rather be up high pressuring the point (for a breakaway) or being a good passing option for a breakout. It’s very junior hockey, honestly. Hard to say he’s poor defensively or not committed defensively when what he’s doing works and is valuable in a junior league. He will have to adapt this for the pros. But it’s pretty common for highly talented and productive junior wingers to play this way. It works.

If I was his Junior coach, I’d be happy with his defensive play. Steve Potvin or Andre Tourigny wouldn’t be.

All the tools are there to be a solid defensive winger in the pros, however. Motor, guts, IQ, feet and stick. I think he’s going to be fine.

They didn’t invite Sennecke either. Nor Yalemchuck nor Parekh, for that matter. Not even Misa. Which is nuts.

Everything I am hearing is winger. Possibly 1st line and first PP. Carbon copy of Gunner

Very similar. A little more in the meat of things. Pronman and Bultman had this to say on Sennecke vs Iginla being left off…

I think that speaks to the more bulldog approach Iginla has for a skill winger. Guenther is smooth and sneaks to quiet areas. Iginla can play that way, too, but he often wins a 50/50 in the corner, and drags a defender all the way up the gut and knocks one in a foot outside the crease. He also scores greasy ones too.

That sums it up well. I’ve seen longer highlight packages on just this skill alone. Somewhere on X, not sure if I still have the links. But it was a package of just board battles, puck protection, and net drives, I think.
